Associating flights with trips and location updating
Dopplr thinks everything happens at midnight GMT. One way of handling the time of update without having to manage all travel details as Tripit does would be to allow the flights to be associated with the trip. You'd need to check flight arrival information, but that is on the internet, assume I make the flight.
I could add my outbound and inbound flights and then Dopplr would be able to check when I've arrived in my stated location and tell Fire Eagle the right information. Rather than pretend that at midnight I instantly move 3500 miles west =)

Inappropriate? We were just talking about how best to do this in the office this week. Right now, Dopplr trips are tied to 'days', without specifying the timezone. You're right that many things are tied to midnight GMT, although it's not true everywhere. For example, we send a "is travelling today" message to your Facebook feed at midnight in the timezone of where you are on that day, and we're moving everything over to being timezone sensitive in the same way.
We definitely plan to have a way to specify the actual time of day of arrival/departure, so we can use that everywhere in status messages and calculations. We're also thinking about moving some of the daily calculations to 6AM rather than midnight, since almost nobody makes their actual travel at midnight of the travel day. What do you think?

Inappropriate?Thanks Matt
6am might work well, it'd be truer in terms of where people spent the night. The integration with Fire Eagle distorts the day metaphor for travel. Fire Eagle says where you are now, Dopplr gives a day based approximation, so Dopplr will always be premature in telling FE.
I guess for flights to the USA this is less of a deal, but for trips to Europe it is significant that someone has a flight at 3pm, as they are still around for much of the day.
I'm pleased to hear that updates are moving to be more time zone sensitive.
If you did capture flight information then you could amend the travel updates to read
Gavin Bell has started trip to Boston and will arrive at 5pm
cheers Gavin
I’m pleased
