Help us improve the Manage Connections page
Hello!
My name's Celia, and I've joined Dopplr as the Community Design Manager.
We think the 'Manage Connections' page could be better. We have some ideas up our sleeves, but we'd like to know what you think of it, too. What's working for you, and what's not? Let us know what you think.
You can find the link to Manage Connections on the top right of each page, or just follow this link:

Inappropriate?Hi Celia, good luck with your new job :)
Do you have any figures about the distribution of the number of contacts per person?
The page looks fine to me now, but it may be because I only have 10 contacts or so, I can imagine it may not scale very well to 100+ contacts.... -
Inappropriate?Hi Alexander -
I'm glad to hear that the page is working fine for you.
My estimate is that most people will have between 1 and 10 fellow travellers, so it's important that the page works really well for that scenario. But you're right to point out that it also needs to scale to 100+ - that's one of the problems we're coming across and will be looking to improve.
And thank you for your good wishes!
Celia

Inappropriate?Since DOPPLR is about travelling, I would think that the contacts page could have an travel-related focus. How about organising it by:
- Distance to you
- Frequency of contact (joint travels or visits to their home town)
- (further down the road) why not give you a rough estimate of how much it would cost to visit each contact (average/median price)
I'm thinking of something like:
----------------------------------------------------------
John Doe
Paris, 213 miles away, 2hrs by train
You haven't met John for more than 6 months
You could be there for only £76 by Eurostar
----------------------------------------------------------
That could encourage people to hook up more frequently. On the other hand, I'm not sure if this would best fit the 'Manage Contacts' page or the 'Fellow Travellers' overview. -
Inappropriate?I like Alexander's ideas a lot, although I don't think Eurostar comes to San Francisco :(
My thought is a bit more pragmatic: how about merging the two first tabs, as they're two sides of the same coin. I'd think you could efficiently express the reciprocal sharing options in one view. I find the existing split a bit confusing.
A visual:
I’m excited to see what you come up with

Inappropriate?hi celia,
i'm one of your extreme users. you know how i (at least used to) travel, right? i have some 300 contacts -- it's difficult for me to organize or group them, which would be helpful for me... what if i could drag and drop them into my own groupings? this might be useful for people who use dopplr for work and pleasure, or who keep track of the comings and goings of disparate groups.
cheers,
molly
I’m psyched that celia's at dopplr

Inappropriate?I don't want to bomb the thread, but for me, unless Dopplr accepts travel confirmation emails as a mechanism for setting my location then the rest of the exercise will become irrelevant as I won't be able to use Dopplr.
With the site of one of Dopplr's competition (which solves the same problem Dopplr is trying to solve) I simply forward my airline confirmation or hotel confirmation to an email address and the competitive site updates my itinerary with date and location.
Not only does that make it easier to update said competitive site, but the site also has a finer granularity of where I am staying and where I will be in an airport too (for airport cross-overs). Two people being in New York or Shanghai at the same time is academic if they are staying in opposite parts of town.
I'm even less unlikely to add this level of detail by hand but it can be extracted from the emails automatically.
Finally, setting GMail to auto-forward regular confirmation emails (I fly to LA on United most weeks) means my travel schedule is maintained at zero day-to-day involvement by me. It's head-and-shoulders above Dopplr in that regard.
I’m wondering whether the UI/design aesthetics are the most pressing aspect of Dopplr in need of a re-think.
-
Inappropriate?ben, you should totally make this a new topic. :)
-
Inappropriate?Great ideas, Alexander! Worth keeping in mind for both pages, I imagine.
Thanks for your input.
Cheers,
Celia
I’m psyched
-
Inappropriate?Hi Thor
Thanks for your feedback :) I think you're onto something there. I agree that we should explore how we represent these concepts of who you've shared with vs who's shared with you. Maybe a more combined view would work... definitely an idea to take to the drawing board!
Thanks again.
-
Inappropriate?Hi Molly
Of course, you travelled like no other! And it's great to have input from people with lots of contacts, cause we want to make sure our solution scales up well.
The grouping idea's good and solid - I like it. Thanks for taking the time to give feedback :)

Inappropriate?is there any concept of being able to group people by Employer/company?
I remember during the late beta stage there was a sort of open-invite for people in a number of companies to join.
Maybe better as a similar thing to the new "near-miss" idea?
I’m not sure this helps
-
Inappropriate?Hi Mike
You're right that there were those kind of invitations, but being able to group people by company doesn't exist in Dopplr at the moment. Are you suggesting something like the Linkedin 'connect to colleagues' feature? -
Inappropriate?Something like that, yes.
It might just be me, but i am struggling a bit to find people i know on Dopplr, and searching by Company/employer as well as by Location would help me at least.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Hi, what about adding the possibility of classifying your conections in groups. Something like "Family"/"Friends"/"Work"/"..." (at least three categories I would suggest). Then one may want to (not) share the trips with any of those categories. I don't think my colleagues at work should know (or would care) where I am going on vacations for example.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Hi Isidro - thanks for your input. A groups feature is something we'll have a think about as we're considering the design of the page.
-
Inappropriate?Good to hear - this is a "must have" for anyone who has more than a few dozen connections.
If (when!) you implement this, please do not predetermine the categories for us. We should be able to name our own groups, and have as many as we want.
Thanks.
-
Inappropriate?Everyone who participated in this idea-generation session: I notice that Dopplr has released a new version of this page, and they blogged about it today: http://blog.dopplr.com/2008/05/16/tas...
I’m impressed
-
Inappropriate?Hi Celia, thanks for your involvement.
I wish there would be a clear difference between being in the same town at the same time and really traveling together. Thank you. -
Inappropriate? How do I delete a person completely from my connections page? I don't want to just mute then, I want to remove them.
