is there a way to add past trips?
i understand that dopplr is focused on alerting friends about your future travel plans, but now that it saves data of old trips (at least in rss), wouldn't it make more sense to let people add their old trips so as to build up a fuller profile?
this is especially important for starters because not everyone have travel plans but most of us have at least travelled somewhere.....so at least i have something to enter on my trips page! =p

Inappropriate?Right now, there's no way to enter historical trips, but I agree it's an important part of talking about your travels. We're working on features right now to enable it.
My philosophy is that browsing your old trips (and those that people have shared with you) should be a bit like browsing through a good blog archive. There should be a search mechanism, a calendar overview, and a page per trip that brings together everything we know about it. When you go on new trips to places you've been before, we'll bring back information on what we know about the previous times you've been there.

Inappropriate?that would be so cool :) thanks!!!!

Inappropriate? You should be able to add past trips - we've had this feature for a little while now. Please let us know if you're experiencing problems.

I've added a ton of past trips via email but can't figure out how to view them without going to my public profile. What am I missing? -
Inappropriate? You can - just add it like a future trip. I added three past ones in the last hour (just updating as I've been slack lately!) so it must work!

Inappropriate?I added in a past trip with past dates - it's not showing at all!
Could you please advise?
Thanks in advance!
I’m curious as to what I'm doing wrong
-
Inappropriate?Hi guys,
I was playing around with adding some old trips mostly to make my map look cooler (easily pleased) last night and I've noticed a few things:
- Some of my old trips didn't start and end in my current home city (London). It makes them less accurate, so you'd need a way to specify a different start/end location. It does also make me wonder how dopplr would handle me moving house!
- My most citites "has visited 8 cities (most often Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Helston, Brighton and Austin)" are wrong. I most often visit my parents (Helston). Is it just a random list of places?
- My public map hasn't updated with the old trips.
- My public profile still states "over 40 days (since August 25th 2007)" - Does this mean you're only ever going to count from my join date? My first trip is in actual fact now in 2001.
- Are my last points just some syncing up lag? If so, that's fine :)
I’m curious
-
Oh, incidentally, my dopplr account is "fberriman". -
It's just a little lag. Because the public profiles can be seen by web crawlers we don't want them to do too much in the way of work on the servers, so we cache the numbers quite heavily. In your case, your numbers are now caught up. -
Hi Phae - Tom answered your points 2-5 but I wanted to answer your first one, too! The answer is that Dopplr is at the moment built around trips that start from and return to the same place. However, over the next few months we'll be working on ways to make trips more flexible, and part of this will mean we have good ways of handling moving house. Stay tuned :)

Inappropriate?Hi Tom and Celia,
I have the same thing with Phae's question #3 - I added a past trip about a month ago, and it's still not showing up in my map, or in the listings underneath the map like some of my fellow travelers have.
Should I continue to be patient (you mention it's lag)? How long does it usually take to synch up one past trip? I would love to input my past travels onto Dopplr (going back to 2006), but if it's going to take upwards of months or years to synch with the map, I'm not sure if it's worth it.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Katie

Inappropriate?i have tried to add trips back in 1995 but dopplr doesn't allow me.
may i know if this is a bug or is there a limit to the no. of years we can go back?
I’m scratching my head
-
I managed to add a trip in 1990, but I did have to enter the dates manually; the dropdown in the date widget won't go back that far usually. However, it does seem to work. -
Inappropriate?Hi Laihiu,
Past trip are now taken care and can be found easily in your 'trip' tab under the 'Previously' link. You can also add past trip using the drop down menu, no needs to enter the dates manually.
Enjoy!

Inappropriate?Hi Noa,
The problem is, the drop-down menu only displays years from 1998 onwards. That makes it impossible for me to add a trip which occurred before 1998.
-
Inappropriate? That's just a weirdness of the calendar picker we're using - it'll only show a range of 20 years to avoid having to display an enormous list. If you pick 1998 as the year, you'll then be able to open it again and pick an earlier year. We do limit you to trips after 1970, though, and this is unlikely to change. Hope that's ok..
You can also just type a date into the text box - you don't have to use the calendar widget to choose dates. -
Ah, that wonderful, age-old limitation, the UNIX timestamp epoch (1970-01-01T00:00:00Z). :P http://tr.im/1t8q -
Inappropriate? Is there a way to bulk-import prior / old trips? I have my own list of all prior trips
city / location startdate enddate
any way apart from Manually Entering each one-by-one today, to get my prior travel into my dopplr travel zeitgeist/omnibus? -
Do you have any e-mail confirmations for those trips? I added 3 years of trips to Dopplr by forwarding all the old confirmation messages I had saved in my mailbox. -
Hi there,
Basically the way to do it is by using our API (http://dopplr.pbworks.com/). Dopplr is originally about upcoming coincidences so we've got less emphasis on the bulk import of past trips. The other way is to forward the confirmation emails like suggested above, but this might get some info wrong as the parser is created for future trips. Hope this helps you anyways!
Best,
Peike
the Dopplr Team -
Inappropriate?understood on forwarding confirmation emails, but my experience so far is they all fail. They work with other travel sites such as worldmate and tripit etc. Tripit gives me more immediate maps, travel history to slice and dice etc. Maybe tripit is my dopplr in the future. Having both coincidences on travel AND history to re-use is the desire.
