Gout is an inherited disorder characterized by recurring attacks of joint inflammation. It results from a defect in body chemistry that leads to an accumulation of uric acid in the blood. The acid forms crystals that are deposited in various parts of the body, particularly the joints of the hands and feet, causing periodic painful attacks of gouty arthritis. There is no permanent cure for gout, but it can be controlled with diet and drugs that reduce high levels of uric acid in the body.
