Maybe this feature is in there, but I can't find it.

Can you clarify what you mean by "favorites"? For example, do you mean...

    * Indicate that you like a guy, and have him be able to tell that you like him?

    * A grid view that shows ONLY the status of guys you've marked as 'favorites'?

    * Some way to make your favorites visually stand out from the sea of non-favorites in the normal grid view?

    * Show 'favorites' at the front of the list, regardless of distance?

    * ... ?

I agree that something like this is needed, I'm just trying to get a better idea of what you guys specifically have in mind :-)

The general improvement I've been leaning towards (but haven't had any time to even start coding yet, because I'm still working on the GPS update) is something like this:

    1) The ability to remove a guy from your grid view unless/until...
[x] he's less than a mile away (temporary exception)
[x] he sends you a chat message
    [x] he adds/updates his pic
    [x] he updates his profile
[x] he marks you as a 'favorite'
    [ ] (*)6 months from now, ( )3 months from now

The idea being that it would allow you to prune guys from the view that you have no interest in, without necessarily writing them off forever. Kind of a "softer" alternative to being able to mutually banish another user from your mutual universes and block them forever. The "less than a mile" temporary exception is to save users from awkward moments and hurt feelings if they encounter that guy in real life and he happens to catch a glimpse of the other user's result screen.

    2) The ability to mark a guy as "exception-to-filter-rules" (or, if you prefer, "favorite") and have him always appear in your search results, even if he'd otherwise be excluded by your current filter rules.

    3) The ability to have Encountr alert you if some guy who's normally "too far" away ever ends up "nearby" (ex: you live in Fort Lauderdale, DC, or Manhattan, and like a guy in West Palm Beach, Delaware, or Long Island). This is "distant future", but something I'd like to implement.

    4) The ability to mark a guy as "like" without him finding out until/unless he marks you as "like" as well (at which point you'd both be alerted). Very, very high on the priority list. Guys who are extroverts might have no idea why this is important, but guys who are introverts dream of this feature ;-)

After reading that list and taking those great ideas into consideration, here's how I would see my ideal "favorites"

Instead of favorites, maybe have flags:

    - You can flag a guy as a favorite (like a bookmark): Favorites always show in the top of the list and are indicated by a different colored border.

If I mark a guy as a "favorite" it's kind of like a bookmark. Maybe have it configurable:
    a) Favorite and let them know. Kind of like a "wink." (Or a "like, in your suggestion)
    b) Favorite without them knowing. Just as a basic bookmark.

If they favorite me back (either with me or without me knowing), have some kind of indicator as being mutual favorites. (A star or something) **I LOVE this idea. **

    - You can flag someone as being blocked: If they're blocked neither one of us show up in each other's lists nor can we msg each other. Neither party is notified of the blockage. ** There really needs to be a way to get a list of guys that you blocked. Maybe a filter "Show blocked users" and these users are then shown at the bottom of your list with a red border.) **

    - Flag for proximity notifications: I like the idea of proximity notifications. Like if I have it turned on for someone that is normally 20 miles away then it lets me know when they're closer. Although, should this be configurable so that it can be limited to mutual favorites? It's ALMOST a little creepy to have someone I don't know be alerted whenever I'm near them.

    - Conditional/temporary block: I do like the idea of removing a guy from the list until they carry out an action (your #1) - that's kind of cool!
