Recently active ideas in ExpanDrive

One thing I'm deeply longing for, is a way to copy the web links for files on my server using ExpanDrive.

I wish there was a context menu item that said something like "Copy Web URL". Perhaps this functionality could be included as an optional install from the Preferences, just as the command line tool "expan" is.

Some (more or less) competing apps that comes to mind hosting this functionality, would be Transmit, Yummy FTP and FileChute. Since these apps are more non-Finder-like in their nature/interfaces, they naturally don't use Finder's context menu for this, as the feature is accessed from within the programs themselves. But I think ExpanDrive would really benefit of using this (context menu) method, letting users easily drop a file, wait for upload, and then choose to copy the actual web link to the file, for quick sharing.

This would be the tipping point for me, to have ExpanDrive run permanently on my machine, and it would fill a dire need in my workflow.

I would really like to see an option to unmount aka eject expandrives from the menubar.

The existing Open Terminal Here script by Marc Liyanage [http://www.entropy.ch/software/apples...] is great.

It would be even more awesome if there were an optional mode to detect if the given path were on an ExpanDrive-mounted (SFTP) volume and open the terminal with an SSH session to the path on the remote host.

I believe this would require either via an extended AppleScript dictionary or new commands in the expan shell tool. It would specifically require the ability to:

• Query what drive (if any) the given path is on


• Query what the remote path corresponds to the local path


• Query for enough information to get the saved authentication credentials. This would either be a flag saying that it uses key auth from .ssh and therefore requires no additional information, or which Keychain item stores the actual password. Command-line Keychain access could then silently suck-out the actual password during script execution.

Slow Speeds compared to other FTPclients when uploading and downloading files. Hope you find a good solution on this, cause i really like this software ! Keep up the good work !

Relabel this software "hard to use." I can't believe all the hype about ease of use, as it won't automatically find my laptop on the lan that sits right next to my desktop, as the ip address changes there all the time. i mean even finder does better then this!

Having recently acquired one of the new Qnap TS-119 NAS devices I was interested to learn that they now include support for the iSCSI protocol out of the box. iSCSI is a bit different to protocols like Samba and AFP because, instead of being a network attached drive, the iSCSI layer makes the device behave exactly as a locally attached drive, meaning, for example, that it could be used completely transparently with Time Machine, with none of the jiggery-pokery that is required to get TM to recognise a remote disk that isn't a Time Capsule disk. The current downside of using iSCSI is that process of setting up an iSCSI connection is clunky, to say the least, requiring the free GlobalSAN iSCI initiator utility to first create the iSCSI volume and then to manage connections.

Given how simple and straightforward that Expandrive is to use it would be great to see the process of creating and managing iSCSI connections become part of the program.

When you copy data from a remote share through sftp to the same share, but into another folder/directory, PLEASE set it such that it will do the copy directly on the server versus using the remote connection from which one is working as the conduit. If sftp cannot directly do this, it can be accomplished by spawning a new ssh process using the sftp authentication info and then simply issuing a cp command. This would save tremendous headaches for me while moving things from staging folders to production and so forth as we deal with some large images, and so forth. It is simply a matter of efficiency and could help in other areas as well. For example, `du` may be able to be issued to more quickly gather disk usage information.

Great app but what about dropping the current app and replacing it with a System PreferencePane and a background app/daemon.

Start/stop the daemon via the prefpane, set bookmarks via the PrefPane including keyboard shortcuts for connecting to the bookmarks, enable/disable the menu icon via the prefpane, Update/Register etc.

What about trying to enable sftp:// as a handler for use via the "Connect to Server..." dialog assuming that sort of thing is possible.

Is there any way of adding a function to " deactivate" image preview. For example opening a folder with 50 images ( 4 mb each ) on my server will use a lot of bandwich. Is this possible , any plans on implementing a function to deactivate preview in further releases ?

I like the product. But, I'd like to store my files with Mosso's Cloud Files service.

I have a long list of servers. I suggest improving the UI to be a tree like similar to Putty Manager as shown in the image below. Plus the following key features:

1. The window is resizable.
2. The data is kept in a single transportable database file.
3. You can encrypt and password protect (you get prompted upon initial startup of the app)
4. You can copy and paste accounts and folders in the User Interface

I have to manage a lot of different connections, so it would be nice to : 1. have the possibility to make the tableview rows less taller, with a smaller drive icon, and 2. have the possibility to group the drives in folders (for me, one level hierarchy would be enough), this would allow me to group my drives per customer or per server for example. Thanks in advance ;)

Why does the drive manager always launch when I mount a drive using the menu icon? That is very annoying. If I want the drive manager, I will launch it myself. Closing the drive manager is one more thing I have to do EVERY TIME I mount one of my drives.

I have a linux server using samba to access data from win and linux clients. When I use expandrive I lose samba access controls ...
This possibility if feasible to implement would also open up the project to a very wide audience that already has a windows server and is looking for a simple, easy way to allow remote access to data. This solution is nice because it can be run when the data server is M$ as long as an ssh daemon can be put somewhere in the net infrastructure..this is simple to achieve with a linux/posix box.... Configuring windows to access smb shares over ssh is a little to techy fr most users to manage...also, smb breaks on slow connections...
The client therefore would have to instill some logic for slow net situations...

Is there a way to Group the Drives? I would like to Group them by Jobs, work and home. I have numerous drives for each job, then specific ones while at the office, and different ones while I am at home.

I was wondering if there are plans to enable Spotlight indexing of connected drives. I know that this is currently not an option but I was wondering if there may one day be an option to index a drive.

I have a suggestion for a small user interface improvement for the S3 connection dialog, I’ve seen this in another product and thought it was a great idea.

In the connection dialog, it would be useful to have a direct link to Amazon’s “Access Identifiers” page at this URL:

http://aws-portal.amazon.com/gp/aws/d...

This leads the user directly to the page with the access key and secret access key. I always have to hunt down this page whenever I need my access key.
