Inappropriate?Hi, gemmes,
If you're using ExpanDrive for Macintosh, the easiest way to change permissions on one of your remote files is using the "chmod" command in the Terminal. -
Inappropriate?*Sigh*
Many other FTP clients can do this using a GUI. Are ExpanDrive trying to enable this behavior in the next update? or an update later down the line?
I like using ExpanDrive but feel it is lacking this important feature. -
Inappropriate?Gemmes -
ExpanDrive 2.0 will be able to do this, release candidate coming any day now.
-Jeff -
Inappropriate?Awesome, I will definitely buy now. If I buy now/soon will I get a free update or should I wait till next week? Im not in a rush.
-
Inappropriate? Our store is already generating 2.0 licenses, so if you buy now, it'll work.
-
Inappropriate?Many thanks
-
Inappropriate?Gemmes - I'm told that feature isn't exactly working perfectly yet. We'd welcome some help testing in the future though
-
Inappropriate?Hi, gemmes, I just wanted to expand upon what Jeff wrote above:
The Finder has a GUI for changing permissions in the "Get Info" window for a file or folder. However, that GUI is not enabled on MacFUSE filesystems by default, and ExpanDrive uses MacFUSE. It's possible to enable that interface, but there are some subtle issues that need to be worked out for it to work correctly with ExpanDrive---we're working on it, but that code isn't quite ready at this time.
Just to be clear, ExpanDrive does support changing permissions just fine as it is, it's only the Finder's graphical interface that doesn't play nicely just yet. I'm hoping to get that resolved soon.
Cheers,

This still does not work for me in ExpanDrive 2.0. Should it work? Is it on the way soon? -
Inappropriate?Permission problems for me too - deal breaker for me, but love the UI!

Inappropriate?I just downloaded 2.02 and this feature still isn't working which limits expandrive to a cool toy on my system. Having to use an FTP client to set permissions keeps me from using exandrive except to play with it and see if this feature works. Until then, Yummy FTP is still the king..
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? The newer version supposedly has this feature in Tiger and Snow Leopard but Leopard has a bug which prevents it from working so, I don't know if it's addressed..
-
Inappropriate? You can also use chmod from the command line on any platform, it's not user-friendly, but it does work
-
Inappropriate? You would also need to do chgrp and chown as well.
-
Inappropriate?chgrp/own doesn't have a ton of meaning on a remote filesystem. if you happen to know the numerical UID of the remote user you can get what you want - but you can't use the name of the remote user. when chown is run locally with a username specified, it has no choice but to look up the UID of that user in the local database - which is very unlikely to mirror the remote server's database unless you're in a federated environment of some sort.
-
Inappropriate?FTP clients currently retrieve the UID for these features. Could that method be used/incorporated with ExpanDrive?
-
Inappropriate?Unfortunately - no.
chown, for instance, will just ask os x "give me the UID for jmancuso". at that point, it'll tell the filesystem "set file's owner to 500" - which is what comes into expandrive. Without rewriting chown, we couldn't make anything like that work.
It also wouldn't work over SFTP [at all], since there is no mechanism to file the username of a particular UID. -
Inappropriate?Interesting.. How do FTP clients like Yummy and others handle this over SFTP?
I have been using Yummy for a long time and while I don't use it for large file ownership and permissions changes, I do use it a lot for small updates like 10-15 files. This keeps me from having to SSH in and cd to the directory and manually doing these one by one. chown -R or chgrp -R is pretty easy to do without having to become an expert on GREP. :-P -
Inappropriate?I have not used ExpanDrive for any proper work because of this (+due to the CSSEdit bug).
Will this feature be in Expandrive 2.0? and will the feature be on its way "any day now".

Inappropriate?Just to chime in with my own solution: I've been using Path Finder with ExanDrive to change remote permissions.
Doing a 'Get Info' on an ExpanDrive-mounted server in Path Finder results in this screen http://grab.by/2RU It means you can modify permissions as you're used to in traditional FTP/SFTP apps.
It won't be a perfect solution for everyone, but having used this setup for a few months, I wouldn't go back to vanilla FTP apps now.
I’m thrilled with ExpanDrive
