When is ExpanDrive getting Amazon S3 capabilities?
I am just curious on how the development of this is going.

Inappropriate? It's still undergoing some testing & debugging, don't want to provide a firm release date just yet. Our focus at the moment is removing some of the current issues that are in ExpanDrive [SFTP]

Inappropriate? Please count me in for this feature! As soon as S3 is announced I will make the ExpanDrive purchase as I wasn't too impressed with JungleDisk.
Many thanks!
I’m waiting with open arms
-
Inappropriate?Let us know exactly what would make it great for you :)
-
Inappropriate?I'd just like to be able to mount my S3 account as a local disk and to be able to add/edit buckets.
I'd like to avoid having the data store in a proprietary manner making the data inaccessible via other S3 clients (i.e. Transmit).
Basically, as long as the program continues to function like it did for me with SSH, with S3, I will be extremely pleased!
I’m diging the interaction on a sunday
-
Inappropriate? That sounds a lot like what we have in mind. We hope to be ready for beta testers very soon.

just wondering how does one become a magnetk beta tester? or is it a semi-private beta testing... the bits are up for anyone to grab if you know where to look? (nightly build folder) -

Inappropriate?I can't wait for this! This is the feature I've been waiting for and will be ecstatic when it comes out. If only Time Machine would work with this...
I’m excited

Inappropriate?I can't wait as well... SFTP alone is not exactly what I need -- but with S3 it'll be great!
I’m excited!

Inappropriate? Are you guys planning on using S3 for backup/storage? Or are you using it to connect to existing files you host there for web dev/etc.
Also, are there any programs you intend to use with S3 [sync, etc] ? -
I think I would like something a little different from the rest... I
What I want to do is be able to keep an S3 drive mounted on my desktop (like the rest) and use my S3 account to backup my iTunes folder (most likely with some kind of rsync script)...
My back up solutions right now are... um lacking... and I once lost a 15 page "creative writing" paper/project in college due to a corrupted disc... but I would also like to start using some backup programs use the S3 as my backup destination....
I would also love, to use an S3 drive as a quick and dirty svn container... something for my own reversion tracking independent of my system... all personal use stuff (like my rc files and a few odds and ends) -
I use s3sync to backup my local drive. If I can see it on sftpdrive, that would be great. Jungle drive can't see files uploaded with s3sync. You have to create some files which will be erased by s3sync automatically. -
I purchased my S3 account half a year ago - mostly for backup and hopefully filesharing purposes - and haven't been using it yet, because of lacking software to efficiently put the service to use. -
Inappropriate?I will be using it primarily as backup/storage, but eventually I may be hosting files there for web.
It would be huge for me if this was true: Expandrive + S3 + Timemachine
-
Inappropriate?I can pretty much promise TimeMachine will not work well :)
It barely works with AFP over a high speed lan -
What I would love to be able to do, is make a remote copy of my time machine backups. In other words, I'd like to have time machine run as it does and make a local backup on my TimeCapsule, then I'd like to be able to write a program to copy the large sparsebundle files that are on the TimeCapsule to s3. Not sure how this would fit into your plans, maybe if you just make sure that expandrive/s3 works with automator to make the program writing easy... -
Inappropriate?Yeah, I figured as much. That was my initial thought process that backups would take forever with TM.
I'll just stick to manually selected files to backup. I don't think any syncing features would be necessary as I would like to avoid having to deal with another jungle disk type app. -
Inappropriate?I'd use it for both. I'm interested in trying to test out Timemachine with it but I don't know that you'll be able to get it to be recognized. I think TimeMachine will only recognize AFP/Samba drives. Working with TimeMachine is probably extremely unlikely but it would be insanely cool (even though it probably wouldn't work too well).
-
Inappropriate?I'll use it for offsite backup (rsync).
I can imagine that TM won't work, and you'd need one heck of a link to be able to use it normally if it did.
For home use, other than the above, it'll help in family file sharing -- pictures, home movies, etc. -
Inappropriate?I'd like to put a vote in for pushing S3 up the priority list. As far as use-cases go: rsync.
-
Inappropriate? It would be rockin' if ExpanDrive could compile and debug my code and then upload it to Github while making me a cup of tea. Not sure if Apple have provided a Cocoa framework that handles tea making. NSStickTheKettleOn maybe?
I guess just S3 for now would be cool. I love [Mac]FUSE!
I’m being silly
-
Inappropriate?S3 will be a bonus for me too. Amongst other things, I'm using it to store a set of Lucene indexes updated by a crawler and frequently want to pull a local copy for development.
I'm not yet using the S3 organiser in Firefox for backups, because I'd like to automate. I was going to roll my own batch process, but it would make a lot of sense to be able to use SftpDrive.
Thoughts... can you do the equivalent for "net use..." in a batch process with SftpDrive?
I’m excited
-
Yes, you can use the `expan` shell script that's part of ExpanDrive.
Go to ExpanDrive Preferences > General > "Create Link" wherever you want the `expan` utility to live (in your path). Then,
usage: expan [COMMAND] [DRIVE]
Where COMMAND is connect or eject, and DRIVE is a substring of any drive name or url. -
Inappropriate?Hey guys, we’re really glad so many people are psyched for S3. It’s our top development priority right now. It’s really the only development we’re working on. That said, we’re not going to give a date for when it will be done because, well, that’s just never a good idea. To quote Al Swearengen “Announcing your intentions is a great way to hear god laugh.”
We’ll post here and on our blog when we’re ready for S3 beta testers.
I’m happy
-
Is this true for SFTDrive too? -
not immediately -
This is pretty awesome. I'm so glad you guys are devoting time to this. I hope you can get it right (I know that's why it's taking so long). I'm psyched to get decent S3 support. -
wonderful -
Inappropriate? This will be interesting... I can't wait to try out ExpanDrive with S3 capabilities as a replacement for my JungleDisk automated backup.
I’m excited

Inappropriate?I'm already a paying customer but S3 access will be a huge benefit. ExpanDrive is fantastic. Can't wait until it's fantastic-er! ;)
-
Inappropriate? It's been a while since this was last mentioned by staff, I'm wondering if it's going to be released any time in the near future.
I’m waiting.
-
Starting to get worried... -
Inappropriate?I guess it's a huge undertaking, though. General stability has probably been of highest priority so far, but IF there were to be S3 support, I'd be completely sold. (My S3 account is still being idle since there's no tool for it that I like.)
S3 coupled with the possibility to right-click and copy public URL address of files, would be the killing blow.
