Why does Expedia charge 35.00 for cancellations weeks in advance?
Expedia.com should be avoided at all costs.
Of course, one of their representatives will probably say to me, "This was in the Terms of Service" but the point is that these types of punitive measures should not be in customer agreements at all.
I decided to cancel a hotel booking I made with Expedia more than two weeks in advance of the actual booking for various reasons, but was given the following message:
You will be charged 34.99 to cancel this reservation.
What? It turns out that reservations canceled at ANY time (even if it is a year in advance of the trip) that were made on Expedia are dinged $34.99. Reservations canceled within 48 hours aren't reimbursed at all.
This is ridiculous, really. I understand punishing me for waiting until last minute to cancel a reservation as a hotel cannot necessarily rebook, but 2 weeks in advance?
That's stupid money.

Inappropriate? It would be interesting to know whether the hotel gets any of that $35. I have a feeling this is all just gravy to the Expedia folks. It's a "because we can" charge. Policies like this reflect an utter contempt for customers.
I’m disgusted, but not surprised

Inappropriate?Well, ironically, I ended up booking with the same hotel directly and had some problems with their website, so I asked the person who ended up helping me about it. She said, "We don't charge a fee for bookings cancelled with more than a 24 hour notice."
I’m blah

Inappropriate?Ive worked with expedia/travelocity/orbitz/others representing hotel reservation departments. Often we get expedia calling up our reservation department asking if we would cancel the booking. If the hotel wipes out the booking without taking a fee then expedia will let the customer go scott free. Hotels will do this to stay in good standing with the giants.
You just have to call and say your wife had a baby or some other logical excuse.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?I just cancelled a reservation for a Sheraton Hotel in NJ with Expedia - this cancellation was 10 days in advance and they charged me $159.00 cancellation fee claiming the Sheraton was charging this to them. I then called the Sheraton and they said there was no cancellation fee for any cancellations made more than 24 hours out. I told Expedia I would never use them again and the reply was "sorry you feel that way"....
I’m upset
