Hello,
Just a simple question: do you support RAW and especially DNG ?

Yes, we have several users asking for RAW support and we are listening.
Being a RAW Photographer myself I would love to support it. However there are a few things to consider, mostly related to UI and how to present "files" on Expono.
I have a few ideas about this myself but we won't be able to realize them without having plugin support for photo applications like Adobe Lightroom/Aperture/iPhoto etc.
We are working on an Expono API which we are going to release as a public beta next week. This will kick off development of plugins. Which will lay the ground work for fully supporting RAW files.
The IDEA of Expono RAW support will look something like this:
1) You select your photos in your desktop application (Let's assume it's Adobe's Lightroom)
2) You select to export your photos to Expono
3) You are presented with a few options where one of the options says "[x] include RAW files". You make sure it is checked.
4) Click "Upload Photos"
The JPG versions of the files are uploaded to the servers, including their RAW counterparts. You can view and work with your photos as normal, but the main difference is that you can see a RAW icon for all photos which have a RAW file associated to them. Clicking on the RAW icon let's you download the RAW file.
OK.. this was a really minimized draft of how RAW support could look like, but you get the picture. There are of course more to it than so, for example privacy/download settings for RAW files, etc.
How would you like to see RAW supported on Expono?
Is this something that would make you happy?
Is this a good start?
What else would you like us to consider regarding RAW support?

Dear Romain,
thank you so much for your request and feedback. As much as I understand your need for Raw support, Expono is intended to be a web service where you can upload store, organize and share (or not share) your photos for view in a web browser.
Since RAW support among the major web browser makers, MS/Mozilla/Apple/Opera and their browsers ie/firefox/safari/opera, there is not much mainstream use.
We too, use Raw, just to tell you that you're not alone.
Best regards
Your Expono Team -

I would love to see RAW support as well. NEF in particular. :)
You don't have to display the image in RAW format, but a possiblilty to upload raw and get it converted to something else that is supported by all major browsers. -

I think a slight addition to the existing uploader app could be a good start, and serving all interested users. Let the app analyze the filenames, whenever a file has an extension that is not .jpg, try to match it with the other filenames in the same batch. Allow any extension, .nef might be a Nikon raw, .doc might be a MS Word file relevant to the photo file, it doesn't matter much. For each .jpg that has other files, show an raw|nef|dng|doc|avi|other -icon to allow choosing for download.
And, of course, encourage app developers to create good plugins for expono up- / download.
Also, allow to upload a file later, to any photo, regardless of local filenames, to be presented in the same manner. -

Great idea! It's duly noted :-)

Your ideas are exactly what I am waiting for!
I would add an "update" feature (actually for both jpeg and dng).
The system could detect if a photo is already on my account and ask me for an update.
Actually RAW support means, for me, a real backup of my photos => I need to be able to mass-download my DNG.
But there is an other problem...
If you work with RAW, the 10GB limit will be reached very quickly.
I don't shoot a lot but I already have something like 120 GB of photos... -

Well, supporting raw would certainly place Expono on my best of the web list. I don't see most users using it, but for us Plus users who are the power users of the service, this would be a really great addition.
Granted, file sizes of raw files are huge and a user would begin to hit their space limit in no time. But I suppose that's just more money for Expono as the power users buy more and more storage space. At that point, it just becomes a matter of Expono's cost of bandwidth, as users would be uploading and downloading very large files.
But, this would indeed be a very seriously cool feature. I'll have my eye on it! :)-
Oh, also, let me just say that Magnus Jonsson is on the right track. This would be the best way to implement raw support. Also, for you lightroom users, check out the Lightroom Expono export plugin at: http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-good...

I think Magnus' solution is a good approach to a fairly challenging workflow. This way we would both have the original RAW file, Expono won't need to do the complex RAW conversion, and we would be able to store and share our adjusted version. Best of both worlds.
Using RAW, we would soon hit the file and transfer limitations. Smugmug has an elegant solution to this; they just built a wrapper to Amazon S3. So I get my bills directly from Amazon for the non-jpeg storage I use. However, this is where Smugmug for once seem to have lost their otherwise excellent usability focus. There is no connection from my RAW images to their jpeg counterparts.
The 20MB image size limit and 5GB upload limit would have to go here. I am more than willing to pay up for a one stop service that meets all my sharing and backup needs.
Expono: You definitely have a window of opportunity here. I notice there are five months since the matter was updated. Are we beating a dead horse here? -

No, you are not beating a dead horse here. Five months ago we were in a closed beta, we launched the site in mid july :)
However, we are working on some other more pressing issues before we can focus on RAW Support. Search being one of them. I personally have a very strong interest in supporting RAW so it won't escape my radar :)
When we are ready to start working on it I will disclose more details on how we plan to implement RAW support here on getsatisfaction. So we all, can join the discussion and make sure we do it right.
Smugmug's implementation is not ideal because it is essentially plain online storage separated from the photos. While, a wrapper for Amazon S3 is smart, I think it complicates for some users.
Upload filesize limitations and bandwidth limitations will be removed once we enable RAW storage, but at the same time we cannot have unlimited storage for RAW images included in the base price for Expono Plus. We have a few ideas about this, that we're open to discuss when it's time.
In the meanwhile, if you have ideas about RAW support, please feel free add them under this topic. -
