can i make photos un-searchable? I want my photos public so my friends and family do not have to make an account. But I do not want strangers stumbling upon them.

Yes, you can :-)
In your search settings you have a checkbox called "HIDE PHOTOS FROM PUBLIC SEARCH" make sure it is checked. It may take up to one hour before your photos become hidden from search.
