Searching for tags should include places, people.

I should not be neither necessary to both tag people / places and the same as keywords to be able to find them by tags.

I fully agree. It's not only about search but how those three type of tags should work together.

I find it frustrating because I both people tag, location tag, and keyword tag, which is redundant work and time consuming.

How I usually tag a photo (redundant work IMO):

    people tag: Magnus Jonsson
    location tag: Tokyo, Japan
keyword tags: Magnus Jonsson, Tokyo, Japan

Why do I do this? Not only because our search is "broken" in that sense, but to stay compatible with third-party software/sites (which might make searches based only on keyword tags).

We are going to work on search and tags after next update (est. end of october).

We might shove people tags and locations tags into the same search index as keywords tags or automatically create keywords tags for people and location tags.
I'm not sure if people wants to have keywords automatically added for people and locations tags.
However, it is quite nice if you want to export photos from Expono (future feature) to an application that only support keyword tags. What's your thoughts about this?

There are some other issues that have to be solved in search such as people tags and privacy. People tags are owned by the person who is tagged.

If you tag me in a photo, I'm able to remove it (make it invisible for everyone but the photo owner). This needs to be respected in both keyword tags and search as well.

Here are some ideas we discussed internally about how the new search should work:

[__________] [SEARCH] -- type anything and hit enter/search

Results are listed in tabs. The result indicates that 234 photos, and 12 people, and 23 places were found matching the search term.

    Photos (234) ___ People (12) ____ Places (23)

    Photos Tab:
    - Lists all photos with a title, description, tags, place, and people tag that matches the search term.

    People Tag:
    - Lists people on expono with a fullname/username that matches the search term. Click a person will take you to that persons profile/expono page.

    Places Tab:
    - Lists locations on expono that matches the search term. Clicking a location will show photos from that location.

Disclaimer: This is basically what we've discussed, stuff might still change.

We are open too any ideas you users might have around improving search (or anything else for that matter ;)

    Bring it on! :)

It's great to see how much you have been thinking about this.

To me a people- or places tag is just another tag, with the added bonus of just a litle richer semantics. The people tag is bound to some online presence, so it's only reasonable to offer the tagged person to remove that tag. A standard tag that have someones name, will usually not be that compromising, and I think that disputes over such tagging will need to be resolved between the tagged person and the photographer (or photo exposer).

When exporting gets to benefit from the tagging, I'd like to be able to choose what to do with people- and places tags, whether or not the export target suports such tags natively. Both because they might support it, and still not handle it to my liking, or because I want to not tie the tags so closely to the online presence.
