13 Reasons your Facebook account will be disabled
Here's what we're hearing from people all over the world: Facebook is shutting down accounts of users who are exhibiting any behavior it finds remotely suspicious. As paradoxical as it sounds, "suspicious" often means just using the site too much! Sometimes they warn people and give them the chance to change their behavior, and sometimes the account termination is sudden and permanent. Most of the time the disabled accounts will be turned back on, whether automatically after a cool-down period, or after prostrating yourself to the FB authorities. But sometimes they'll lock it up and throw away the key.
Facebook remains intentionally vague about what "bad behavior" looks like, and so it's no wonder that people get confused, angry or despondent when they get the ACCOUNT DISABLED message. To help people avoid having their accounts disabled, I've listed the most common reasons why people report having their accounts abruptly turned off. Keep in mind, that this list is almost surely incomplete, and until Facebook changes their policy to embrace more transparency and two-way communication we'll have to live with a bit of uncertainty when using Facebook.
Here are the things that (supposedly) will get you kicked off Facebook:
1. You didn't use your real name
Don't try to use a nickname (or initials)in lieu of the name on your birth certificate, because Facebook will find you and spit you out.
2. You joined too many groups
Remember that the maximum limit is 200 groups per user. More than that just looks desperate, don't you think?
3. You posted too many messages on a wall or in a group
Even Guy Kawasaki had his account disabled--in his case for "excessive evangelism."
4. You posted in too many groups, too many user's walls
You may be axed for being too verbose in too many places. That's what spammers do, silly. On Facebook it is better--or at least safer--to be seen than heard.
5. You friended too many people
Not so long ago this was a prime cause of disabled accounts, but Facebook has instituted a maximum of 5000 friends that should protect you from yourself.
6. Your school/organization affiliation is doubtful
The overlords are sometimes not very trusting, and they may accuse you of not graduating from Harvard (or Plum Senior High School). The impertinence! Better have your diploma ready.
7. You're poking too many people
We've heard this from multiple sources, and it's easy enough to avoid. Save the pokes for people you *really* like, as mum always said. But beware the odd FB app that pokes on your behalf.
8. For advertising your app on wall posts
The line between spam and self-promotion is a thin one, but let it be known that pimping your shiny new Facebook app is definitely considered SPAM.
9. Using duplicate text in multiple messages
Some people paste a generic welcome message into friend requests to save time. DON'T DO THIS! It makes you look like a spammer. (Ironically, pro spammers are probably randomizing their messages to avoid this trap)
10. You are a cow, dog, or library
Being a real person is not enough, you must be a homo sapien. Accounts have been deleted for cows, dogs and libraries.
11. You are under eighteen years old
According to one report a user's account was suspended when they suspected her of being under 18. She was required to enter a work email address to prove her maturity, at which point her account was reinstated. [note: other users have pointed out that being under 18 is fine if you're part of a High School group, though underage home schoolers have been told to bugger off]
12. You wrote offensive content
Reports of "sudden death" on accounts have been reported by users who were told they had posted offensive content, but were not provided details of the offense.
13. You scraped information off Facebook
They have a zero tolerance policy for page scraping (i.e. pulling content off their web pages via a script). Unfortunately, they don't have a reliable way of proving it's you who's doing the scraping (IP matching is probably as good as they can get), so you may find this a difficult charge to defend yourself against.
Finally, you may be disabled for no clear reason at all. One Australian member reported this staggering experience:
"I was blocked for a little while because I was 'misusing certain features of the site' Naturally I closely examined their conditions of use etc for some insight as to what I must have done wrong. I couldn't for the life of me find anything...
"Upon request for clarification I was told that they were not at liberty to divulge which features or of course any thresholds of use. Then they warned me not to do it again or I would be banned permanently without recourse to reinstatement."
You have been warned. Remember that the hand of justice is swift and merciless.

Inappropriate?Oh, if you find your account disabled for one of these (or other) reasons there is today only one recourse: you must email Facebook at one or all of these addresses:
- disabled@facebook.com
- appeals@facebook.com
- info@facebook.com
The problem is that now that you've been branded by their bots as a potential spammer they aren't super motivated to get back to you quickly. Be tireless, be forceful, be apologetic, and you'll eventually get your account back. Probably.

I’m thinking there must be a better way

hello guys. i have a fiend tht was hacked in a way and his facebook is not with him anymore.. wt is the process he should do inthis case to solve this pro? the haker now is putting some edited pics for him and its making lots of troubles.. so can anyone help me in advicing this friend wt to do to solve this ???? -
Inappropriate?Thor -- great research, thanks for putting all of this together. Most of these reasons are sensible, and I understand the need for security. That said, the final example you cite is shocking. As the leading social network, FB policies will become de facto standards. I'd like to see them be more thoughtful and responsive to their customers.
I’m hoping fb representatives will comment on this.
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, those are all pretty easy requirements for any sensible person to meet.
-
Inappropriate?hey you took this content out of context. from the second link, it is a comment (the 6th one) to that article and you left out information. b/w those two paragraphs it says
"About the only thing I could attribute it to was that poking a lot of people constituted either 'spam' or 'stalking behaviour' Both of which remain completely undefined in their terms."
which you replaced with "..." -
Inappropriate?I'd already pointed out that excessive poking was a punishable misdemeanor. The point here was the unfortunate exchange: "Don't do any more of what you're doing." "What was I doing?" "We can't tell you."
I thought the part I excerpted illustrated the main criticism that Facebook has opened themselves up to: though their individual policies are all sensible, their style of enforcing them can be frustratingly opaque (even Kafkaesque), and the resolution process impersonal and unsettling.
I believe Facebook listens to its users, though, and I expect this kind of feedback will get considered as they evolve their business. -
Inappropriate?I got banned from facebook once for content that they said was "offensive to certain religious groups"
I had a picture with the face of my friend photoshopped on the popes body, apparently simple photoshopping is offensive.
I have a feeling that a christian group on my campus did a mass reporting of me as offensive for organizing a boycott of their demostration however. -
Inappropriate?Read how my account got terminated here :

Content has profanity but not by me... so hence the link instead of the whole article here...
I’m gonna come back and screw them over!
-
Inappropriate? The major reason you don't want to mess about with facebook is here
http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash...
not spam or a malware page.
Why do you think they want accurate info and demographics on you? -
Inappropriate?Haha, you think that is bad.
One time I had my account warned because I posted "offensive content", I thought maybe in a drunken binge I had posted some naked people or something, so I requested confirmation why it was warned.
What did I get? A reply saying I had done nothing wrong, and I was reinstated.
"Warning! Your account could be disabled.
Your behavior indicates that you may be in violation of Facebook's
Terms of Use. Continued misuse of Facebook's features could result in
your account being disabled. If you have any questions or concerns,
you can contact us at warning@facebook.com"
And the response to my inquiry:
"I’m sorry for the confusion on this matter. The warnings
you received were sent to you in error. No warning has
been filed for your account, and no action has been taken
on any content that you have posted to the site. Let me
know if you have any further questions.

Inappropriate?wow... i never realized facebook could be so weird and picky about their rules
I’m sounding the alarms

Inappropriate?Read the updates on my blog : Facebook is pretending to not even know about my case!!
http://lilmissmei.blogspot.com/2007/1...
I’m very very ANNOYED!
-
Inappropriate? My network was created on 2.0 networking. When outsourcing affected my friends, we helped one another using social networking.. the idea worked.. everywhere but on facebook. I was banned for telling my colleagues about someone elses incredible group on facebook, at the same time that hundreds of colleagues were laid off and I sent them career resources and help to use social networking to get their next job. I asked facebook to reconsider, it was declined.. don't ask because they won't tell why, and their decision is final with or without your input.
If that is bad, I don't want to be good. Makes me feel like a rebel who picks her social networks more selectively!
I’m agitated into selective social networking!

Inappropriate?I'm going in for another appeal but this time with the Cuomo case as my back-up. If they still ignore my sexual harassment reports, i'm going to the press.
I seriously do believe Facebook Customer services are run by robots. They do not read mails but rather just record the amount of times mails go to & forth your mailbox. Notice none of the Customer service personnel has a last name? I doubt they go by the "we're friendly" basis but really just boils down to either they're robots or just too darn afraid to tell us who they are.
I’m getting there....

Inappropriate? This is what happen to me!!!! this is my email to facebook about a guy named michael leaf!!!
There was an incident on Oct 19 2007 involving an individual named MICHAEL LEAF. He contacted with interested in buying my HP PDA I told him the price. He asked about if it had a wifi card, I told him no that he would have to buy one. At that point he asked me to search for prices of wifi cards. I told him that that is his job as he is the person wanted to purchase the product. He then messaged me back about how rude I am and that he found a cheaper PDA for 75 dollars he then went on to tell me to shove the PDA up my ass and was extremely vulgar he then told me to fuck off .At this point I told him to stop messaging me and to leave me alone or I would report him at that point he said “do you want me to delete your account” or something in that manner at that point I just emailed facebook about him being vulgar and making that kind of threats.
about 10 minutes later I tried to log into my account and it was deactivated. I am extremely upset about this. I have emailed facebook like I said before on 3 different occasions about this I even found a number and spoke with someone at facebook she told me to email facebook and if I did not receive a response to email back using the heading of customer support manager. That is my next step if nothing is done after this!
In desperation I looked up MICHAEL LEAF name on facebook and that is when I came along a girls blog explaining this situation she is having with facebook and MICHAEL LEAF .Her account was deactivated aswell. We are both thinking about taking this global if nothing is done her account has been reactivated but MICHAEL LEAF is still on facebook causing problems for other people.
I work in the music industry and use facebook for well networking and in the last day this has caused such an inconvenience and the worst thing is that facebook knows about this individual and nothing has been done with him so he continues to cause problems for people! This is very serious and I know that facebook is a free service but I would hope that the moderators would attend to such complaints when it is from many people about the same person in a faster manner. I will be taking this to the authorities if needs be this person can not continue to slander people ( that is what I believe he did to me to cause my account to be disabled) and continue to harass people. Facebook should be a safe and fun place to be I am 21 I can handle the way he spoke to me but if there is children using facebook and come in contact with this guy it could cause a lot of problems.
I really hope something is done with my account to have it reactivated please look at the link below as you will see the convocation legit and in no way was I spamming or causing in problems. I follow the rules at facebook.com. Again this is a great inconvenience to me and I would like it to be sorted out as soon as possible. I will also include the messages that the other girl has sent along with her incident so you can see the serious of this problem again if nothing is done we will find a way to take this higher up. I am not trying to cause problems but I don’t believe this can continue on facebook ,facebook is a fun site is should not be ruined because of people like this.
Again thank you so much for reading this I know it is long but I wanted to give you as much information as possible to help with your investigation.
NOTE *** i have yet to hear anything back from facebook.. i cant beieve they let this happen... i am nto the only one i am in contact with Meli about this situation she has a similar experience with this guy and facebook...
I’m PISSED OFF
-
Inappropriate?Yup people... this is the very same Michael Leaf that got my account terminated. How on earth he does it without getting terminated himself is unbelievable.
I’m out to get Michael Leaf!!

Inappropriate? Here is why facebook banned me:
On 10/22/07, Kyle from Facebook <appeals-comment@facebook.com> wrote:
Hi,
Facebook profiles are meant to represent a single individual only.
Groups, clubs, businesses and other types of organizations are not
permitted to maintain an account. I apologize for the inconvenience,
but you will no longer be able to use this account, nor will you be able
to recover any content within the account. This decision is final.
If you would like to use Facebook to bring your organization together
and coordinate activities, we offer a Groups feature. Facebook Groups
allow people to come together to express objectives, discuss issues,
post photos, etc. If you have a personal Facebook profile, you can
create one of these groups from that account. The option to 'Create
Group' is available at the top of the Groups page.

Wierd...apparently I'm a member of some super secret group that uses facebook without having a group...I was a member of one group (my location)...but that was it. My facebook account was personal, I had about 25 friends and family added to it...now it's gone. Facebook is horrendous, irrational, and banned my account for no reason. Not a big deal, I only logged in about once or twice a month anyway...so I wasn't yet a facebook junkie but I just thought this was very strange. -
Inappropriate?Whoa. That's harsh! Glad it wasn't a big loss for you, though. But seriously, they need to reverse this "Guilty until proven innocent" tactic -- or maybe more accurately, "Guilty period" tactic.
I’m a Facebook user and like it but am sad and annoyed when I hear stories like this
-
Inappropriate?Excellent post! Thank you for shedding the light in a tongue-in-cheek but serious way. LOL. I think FB is an excellent place to further one's branding - I don't understand why some people are resistant to using their real name.
I’m very grateful for Facebook and absolutely LOVE this platform for building quality relationships!
-
Inappropriate?Thank you for the heads up in these postings, there should be a way of backing up your FB data. If you spend all of your valuable time setting up and sharing with your contacts, creating group content etc. Wouldn't it be nice to know you have secondary method like email to contact all of your friends that you made on FB. Yes I know you can go to individual profiles and copy/paste them into say a word doc, but how long would that take if you have 500 friends, and colleges you wish to stay in touch with? Maybe we need a new application where the users of FB can vote you back on the island....
I’m thinking Mari is right, and happy to have such great relationship tools such as FB. It would be a shame to loose this for no reason.
-
Inappropriate?Hey everyone, just an update on the fella MICHAEL LEAF. His account is officially terminated!! Persistence works...
Read the Thank you page : http://lilmissmei.blogspot.com/2007/1...
I’m a grinning mad woman!
-
Inappropriate?Congratulations! I'm glad you got the resolution you wanted.
-
Inappropriate?Thank you for this informative post. I'm going to share it with my ZeroCostPromotions.com partners.
I love that FB wants us to be real. After all, when you can fake sincerity, you can fake anything!
(note: the key to faking sincerity is to be real<g>)</g>
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Thor, thanks for the thorough explanation of everything. Above all, I think I'm most irritated about the "non-real" name issue since I use the same name practically everywhere online. In fact, there are many people who don't know my given name. Part of this was to ward off stalkers, since I have an extremely rare surname.
But I've also taken pains to ensure that I use a consistent handle everywhere, so for them to arbitrarily say that isn't real just doesn't feel fair. We'll see how much longer I hold on to my account. But in the event, I'm building a business case around 1) number of other sites using my handle 2)search results using my handle and 3) not violating any of the other indicators above.
I’m ticked
-
Inappropriate? You make a really good point. If someone's taken on a nickname and they're known more by that than their real name it seems pretty silly to enforce the usage of a real name. Good luck UM!

Hi Chris,
You have already been given a second chance when we reactivated your
account on 01/29/2007. You received numerous warnings to slow down your
activity. Failure to adhere to those warnings has resulted in the
permanent loss of your account. We will not be able to reactivate your
account, nor will you be able to recover any content within the account.
This decision is final.

My Response:
Slow down My Activity!?!?!
What was I doing that was "TOO FAST"??? I wasn't spamming, and I hardly added anyone as a friend, I hardly made any comments, sometimes I would go DAYS without logging on. If Anything you all needed to have better security for all those "Apps", I would have over 100 invites from different people a day, when I asked before if I could stop that I was told NO, but too me THAT Seems like Spamming, yet I couldn't mark that as spam but I could mark notifications of stuff I had installed as spam. seems kind of backwards to me. Shouldn't you all be stopping people over the age of 22 from adding so many 15 and 14 year olds as friends, they could be seen as predators. I've seen TONS of accounts with fake names up that don't get touched.
I know people that add over 100 friends a day and nothing happens to them. I know of accounts that have straight up pornography in them and are still here. People are on here SPAMMING and they still here. You have people selling Drugs and illegal copies of software in marketplace. As far as not being able to "recover my account" I know that is a lie because my account is still listed on ALL my groups as well as on my wifes account, since she is still in a relationship I can't add her under none of my other accounts.
So call it what you want. You all and your Gestapo tactics won't last long. Social Networking is supposed to be just that, half the people I have ever met in my life I met ONLINE FIRST.....I met My WIFE Online. So for you all to want people to ONLY add who they know in real life is not right. How are you going to have BANDS on here and Lord KNOWS how much activity they will have on their accounts, not to mention the THOUSANDS of people they will add that they don't know. I've been a member of this site for over 3 years, almost since it was first available @ my School. and I loved facebook then, you all added high schoolers and the site went downhill. I understand the need to protect the "kiddies", but I cant have possibly done anything near as bad as some of these people. Trust and believe that at your current rate you will only be shooting your own foot. I can only imagine how many other loyalist you have already gotten rid of. -
Inappropriate?I wrote this as a reply on a thread asking for a Facebook rep on Satisfaction and am reposting it here.
I am extremely upset over Facebook's unintelligent move to delete people using alternative identities online. Besides this being a complete lack of respect for online privacy (specifically bloggers and sex workers who require alternative names in order to live normal lives: please read http://girlwithaonetrackmind.blogspot... ), it shows a lack of understanding for building online brands (e.g. Cameron is always known as Ceedub, many of us have friends who are known under alternative identities to avoid stalkers, etc.). Even more so, this disrespects rape victims, people with families, and anyone else who would prefer not to hurt others or themselves more by simply being online.
While Facebook may claim that users shouldn't use their service if they require online privacy, it's not a good excuse. Kicking someone out of your service is not like asking them to move to another town; there is only one internet for all of us to use. A lot of these concepts can be seen in any one of Violet Blue's talks about the importance of online privacy. Google has had her come in as a speaker to help advise their policies, so there is no reason for Facebook not to listen to these issues.
