How do I correct a Facebook app chat error message?

My wife and I have both purchased iPhones. She had a facebook page but I did not however, once we purchased the iPhones I decided to sign up because of the chat feature. I set up my account and can chat just fine on my PC but, when I login to the facebook app on iPhone I receive the "There was an error loading your online friends." message when I press the chat icon at the bottom. When my wife logs into the iPhone facebook app on my phone the chat feature works fine. I even created a new facebook account but still have the same problem. This leads me to believe I have something set up wrong in my facebook account. I have had absolutely no luck figuring out the solution or receiving help from facebook. Could anyone please give me some clues of what to check so I can correct the problem.
