I'm leaving Facebook 4ever! Wanna come with?
I'm done with Facebook. I've never really seen the value in it (except Scrabulous, perhaps) and I am getting increasingly uneasy about handing over so much information to them. The recent Beacon debacle was revelatory. So I'm saying goodbye.
But guess what! You can't just go to the site and delete it, you can only *deactivate* it. So I wrote customer service and found out how to delete your account:
"If you want your information removed from our servers, we can do this for you. However, you need to first log in, delete all profile content, and deactivate. Once you have cleared your account, let us know, and we'll take care of the rest. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."
If you have been finding Facebook increasingly invasive and decreasingly useful, please join me for a Facebook event: "Leave Facebook 4ever!" this Friday, Dec. 7 at noon.
Here's the invite ;-)

Oh no! Do I really have to clear out every one of my friends *as well* as clearing out the profile info before I can have them remove the whole account from their servers? I can't wait for the slew of mesages from people asking why I don't want to be their friend any longer. I already got a bunch of emails, IMs and SMSs about "Courtney Skott is no longer listed as married to Lane Becker."
Hey Facebook -- you were never a part of my marriage, so stay out!
I’m more annoyed at FB every day.

Inappropriate? Why is it so hard for them to provide a button that just says DELETE EVERYTHING? After all, it's MY data, isn't it? I bet they don't see it that way...
I’m sad

its called the delete account button -
Jay - perhaps that's a new feature. This conversation was posted 9 months ago. There was no delete account function at that time. -
Inappropriate? It turns out you can play at Scrabulous.com sans Facebook.
I’m using the big dictionary this time.

Inappropriate?I just want to come in and say that It was very disconcerting to see Facebook tell me that your marriage was over. Now I know the reason...
Oh, and what kind of bullshit is "delete all of your info manually, and then we will delete your account"? That's AOL tactics, right there. -
Inappropriate? You're like the Heaven's Gate of facebook.
-
Inappropriate?I zapped mine last week. Wish I could erase my data, but they won't get more.

Inappropriate? The most wonderful part about deactivating a Facebook account is the way they nag you to stick around. Whatever reason you give for bailing, they have a response:

I left some comments on Simon's a while back detailing how I feel about the "omnibus" social networks like FB, MySpace, etc. - they're like an especially naggy friend, demanding 100% of your time until you leave in frustration:

I’m teh stoked
