Inappropriate? Not sure, but regardless I would recommend using Firefox instead of IE for many many reasons.

I switched to firefox but it didn't make any difference because once I was asked to install the flash player ths same thing started happening again -
Inappropriate?Ive read people have the same prob with firefox...
-
Inappropriate?I've had the same prob too. Strange thing is, it didn't work one day, worked the next day and then didn't work again another day.

Inappropriate?I am having the same problem, it has been happening for a couple of weeks on my laptop which has Vista and IE8 (downloaded this version to see if it would solve the problem). I have been reading on other sites about usign Firefox, this works for my account but does not work for other people's accounts on my laptop. Some people have also mentioned about disable active scripting but I am not sure where to find the option to do this and I changed some other options but it did not work.
I am getting really annoyed!!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I think I've figured out that the problem is a conflict of some kind with adobe flash. When you go to adobe.com and uniinstall flash, you can then access facebook no problem. The problem then is with the apps on facebook, that you NEED flash to run. sigh. Get it together guys!
-
Inappropriate?Sympathise with you all. I have the same annoying problem. Contacting FaceBook, simply puts you onto a premium line where you might or might not get help at £1.50 a minute. Think I'll join MySpace
-
Inappropriate?I've mainly had this problem since facebook made recent changes. Cannot open my homepage. I have to quickly hit 'profile' before the homepage loads to get to other pages. I use Vista, I tried changing from IE 7 to IE8 but still no difference........ WE NEED A SOLUTION NOW......

Inappropriate?Same here IE kept crashing on me, repairing microsoft worked for a short time then started crashing again so i switched to firefox which worked for a short time then the same happened all over again, I log in to facebook then a few seconds later my browser crashes and needs to restart. Why only facebook?
I’m very fustrated
-
Inappropriate?I did too, but when I tried an application that I needed Flash for, it happened again. Good luck.
-
Inappropriate?Go to Adobe Flash and run the uninstall, but you won't be able to use some of your applications, or view videos. At least you can use facebook until they get it fixed.
-
Inappropriate?Hi Laurie.
I didn't actually uninstall Adobe Flash but downloaded the latest on top of what I already had. I have full functions with photos and have played some YouTube videos with no problem. FaceBook still strikes me as being a bit unpredictable and there just have to be other issues that cause these problems. After all, it seems that only FB is causing these IE crashes.
I’m Not 100% sure
-
Inappropriate?same problem here. Didn't uninstall flash but disabled it in IE. Now FB works, but I miss flash now for other websites...
-
Inappropriate?Maarten, try downloading a fresh Adobe Flash. Sometimes files become corrupted. Nothing to lose.
-
Inappropriate?Tried. Didn't help me. Did uninstall before fresh install. Did a complete reset for IE, but still no luck... Maybe there is a incompatibility between the latest facebook and the latest flash,
-
Inappropriate? It may be that your security settings will not allow you access. If you add the facebook URL, in your "trusted sites" under tools + internet options + the security tab" you will find the trusted site settings. I hope this helps.
I’m Happy if it helps you
-
Inappropriate?Spiceman, thanks for your advice. But still the same problem... As it is only the problem with facebook I can only hope they will fix the problem someday..
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Tried everything suggested above and more, still no luck. Can't help feeling it's to do with recent changes to facebook.
-
Inappropriate?I think I found a workaround for this problem.
It seems there is a problem with flash and webcams. According to this thread:
http://dreamweaverforum.info/flash/12...
there are problems with the webcams on Sony VAIO laptops. But might be other ones as well. The solution they give is to rename the file
windows/system32/BtwVdpCapFilter.dll
For me this works and the problem is localized. However, I really don't like these kind of "solutions". The problem is removed, not solved. Hopefully there will be a nice update soon, to fix it the clear way. Until that time I can live with this. Note this solution is for VAIO laptops, but I think the solution might be similar if you own another laptop or computer.
I’m curious if this helps some people here
-
i looked for that file in a HP Compaq.. no dice -
Inappropriate?I do have a sony vaio, but i've never even used my webcam. ? I wonder how many others here have the sony vaio??
-
I have a vaio laptop too.... hmmmm -
Inappropriate?Yep - I've always used VAIO laptops but never use the webcam except a couple of times in SKYPE. I use a new VGN-AW1/M/H and getting all functions on FaceBook just now, since downloading a new Adobe Flash - but others have tried this without success.
I’m baffled
-
Inappropriate?Vaio also. FW21E. Tried Maaten's solution but microsoft won't let me change the file name. Never changed a filename before, perhaps missing something here. Come on, sort it out guys, Sony, Microsoft, facebook.
-
Inappropriate?I am having the same problem and it has happened ever since i downloaded i.e explorer 8 with yahoo! If anyone knows a solution to this [please let me know!!! The only advice i can giove is to keep checking your resolution centre to see if it comes up with anything!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? No definitive answer yet, Stephen. We've all tried various things (shown in these threads). The Adobe Flash change worked for me but not others. Whatever you try, do one thing at a time and check it, so you know what cured it. Apart from that, FB keeping out of it all, which is a shame as they must be aware of what's going on here.
I’m Disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Yes, there is a workaround, go to adobe flash and use their uninstall link.
-
Inappropriate?Removing the flash player solved the problem... BUT... now I can't view many applications or videos etc..... DEFINATELY A COMPATIBILITY PROBLEM BETWEEN FLASH PLAYERS
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Of course uninstalling flash is not a solution. You can view facebook, that's true, but you will miss a lot with other web pages. Did anyone try the solution I gave? Curious if it helps, because then we really know the source of the problem. I suggest there is some incompatibality between the sony built-in webcams and vista, what makes flash crash, what makes facebook crash in its turn. I hope sony can solve this problem at the source by fixing their driver for the webcam. But actually flash and facebook should be possible to deal with exceptions and not just crash. Are there also some people here NOT using a sony vaio laptop? Just curious.
-
Inappropriate?I did not rename any files, but did uninstall flash player. Have firefox in addition to IE, so use that for facebook only. I am using a sony vgn tt190. I would think they'd get their update together soon! I wonder if anyone is having this issue WITHOUT it being sony?
-
I am having the same problem and am on a Sony Vaio. However it has only just started happening and I have had the laptop a few weeks. The update of Adobe hasn't helped me - I have tired re-naming the folder as suggested by maarten but it won't let me. Really frustrating! -
Inappropriate?Thats interesting i am also using a sony laptop vgn- fw21l and this has only recently started to happen! Wonder if everyone who is having this problem has a sony laptop with lime wire software on because i've heard that i can close certain apps and web pages down in this way??
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I'd be willing to bet the farm, that Sony had an update, that was on or around the time this started, and we didn't even know it. (I fear mine has some automatic update thing that I can not for the life of me find, or reset). Anyone else that knows about this? I bet if we can roll back, or uninstall that particular update, we may be ok again? Ideas?
-
Inappropriate?I don't think there are automatic updates from Sony. VAIO Update Centre is supposed to alert the user to available updates and then you have the option to use them or not. Start / Help & Support / VAIO Support takes you there (in Vista). I think you are on the right track - that something has happened recently to cause this. Wonder if a query to Sony would bring any result?
-
Inappropriate?I made a call to Sony and they suggested an update. They told me VAIO update only updates automatically the most necessary updates and for the more the more specific updates you should do it manually.
Strangely , if I use the VAIO update link it doesn't suggest any update. But if i go to VAIO support website and go from there to updates there seem to be available updates indeed. That's quite strange.
However, they suggested me to update the Sony Entertainment Platform, there is a new version since 19/02/09. I installed this one, but there are still problems with flash and the webcam. I still get a crash if I click on the webcam tab of the flash settings dialog ( you get the flash settings dialog by right clicking on a flash item/movie ).
Before I did the update Sony suggested I thought it might be a good idea to rename the file I renamed ( see above ) back to its original name to prevent problems with the update. And there some miracle happened. Now the file has the original name, just as it was and... facebook is working!? I checked this before doing the update from Sony so I'm sure the update didn't fix it. But what fixed it then? Maybe facebook changed some code to prevent the crashes? Can anyone of you try if the problem still exists when flash is enabled?
Anyway, there is still a problem between flash and VAIO webcams as the flash settings dialog still crashes...
When I have time Í'll call Sony again to find out.
BTW do you all have vista? If so, it might point to another driver incompatibility with vista...
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?Mine still crashes internet explorer. Haven't tried in firefox. I will try to d/l that update. I did notice, that Sony told you they only auto update the most necessary files. I wonder if there was one the last week of March? I wonder if there is a way to see what sony vaio updates were installed. I will try to update the one you suggested. I wish they'd fix this crap. It seems it's JUST Sony owners that are having these issues. Uggh.
-
Inappropriate? Not clear cut at all. I am having no trouble at all now on my VAIO. The only word that seems to crop up - and something I don't use - is Webcam. Why not try disabling it - or just don't use it?
-
Inappropriate?@David, I tried disabling the webcam, but the problem was still there... What happens if you click the webcam tab in the flash settings dialog?
-
Inappropriate?I really don't know, maarten. I haven't been into those settings as I'm not sure exactly what I wouyld be doing. That's mainly why I just downloaded a fresh Adobe Flash download and which seemed to do it for me.
-
Inappropriate?I'm having the same trouble; also on a 2 month old SONY VAIO, running Vista with a webcam built in that I've never used. I'm confused as to why when I log into facebook it crashes at the home page and yet my sister logs on using her id and has no trouble using her profile at all on the very same laptop? Could this mean it's a virus on my facebook account and not my laptop? Seems strange that the only thing that shuts IE down is facebook and then it happens only when logging on to my account and not others.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I think so, Sharon. I've always thought that the starting point is FB as this problem has onkly occurred since they re-jigged the site. Facebook don't seem to want to get involved unless you call them at £1.50 a minute.
-
Inappropriate? No, It's not a virus. It's an incapatablitity problem, between sony, flash, and facebook. I bet your sister is opening to another page in her facebook than you do. The only work around I've found to work for me, is firefox WITHOUT installing flash. If you install adobe flash, it will crash too. This doesn't solve the problem trying to play any applications on facebook. I sure hope they fix it soon!
-
Inappropriate?I've tried everything. Facebook needs to address this problem or it won't get fixed :(
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?how do you know it is not a worm or virus, if you run Norton or some other garbage protection you most likely are infected.
Spybot, adware (not the fake ones), AVG.
Make sure your computer foundation is solid first
-
This problem is only with facebook, not a worm or virus -
Inappropriate?I don't know about other people but I use a good program (not Norton etc)
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I also use Norton and checked with anti spyware programs.
It's obvious something flash-webcam related, because the flash settings dialog crashes on the webcam settings. Facebook seems to be requesting a connection with the webcam, and crashes. Apart from that it seems to be sony vaio related. I don't think there are worms for specific laptop-brands ;)
We can only hope for a sony/flash/facebook update to fix this problem... -
I notice a friend just became a fan of facebook 'video chat'. That could explain why fb want access to our video cams. -
Inappropriate?Day before yesterday evening I clicked on 'Download all available updates and shut down'. There were 9 updates available. Went to bed and let it do it's thing. As of yesterday no problems with facebook??
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Mine is suddenly working fine too now. I guess they must've fixed the problem :D
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?From microsoft, or sony?
-
Inappropriate?Sorry, I don't know where the updates came from, in the mode I used it doesn't show them. I did email Sony a while ago and asked them if they were aware of the problem. They gave me a non committal answer.
-
Inappropriate?I checked and mine is working also! yippee...now on to all those applications I couldn't play while this has been going on!
-
Inappropriate? When I try to go to facebook my internet explorer closes. I can't even log in to my facebook. Any ideas on what I can do? I have a Sony Vaio laptop if that helps.
-
I can use facebook it just closes sometimes when i click on someones name -
Inappropriate?Everytime I go to facebook, it says that internet explorer is now restarting. I do not have a Sony. Any suggestions??

-
Inappropriate?I too have the ie crash everytime I sign in to facebook it also randomly happens to my aol e-mail(only when i try to read my mail) I would love it if someoen would find a solution!
I’m sick of this
-
I also had the same problem last week. I read through the suggestions here and followed the advice to download Firefox. It worked! My PC is not a Sony or a laptop so I think those people can relax thinking it may be the issue. The only thing I had done recently was to agree to download the ActiveX and a week later this problem started. I have also removed it now. Firefox is also amazingly fast...I thought is was my computer that was sooo slow. It was Internet Explorer! Good riddence to it. Hope this helps. -
Inappropriate?ahhhhh!!!!! NOthing is working. This is frustrating.!!!! I am using vaio and i cat get aything to work.....
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I uninstalled activex and restarted my computer, but it didn't help! Thank though at least for some it works,,, ANY Other ideas out there?
-
Inappropriate?hey i kinda have a solution it is to download and use google chrome i do not know why it works but it does and google chrome is faster than any verson of internet explorer. so i hope this helps!

i just had the same problem and i updated the flash player and bam! now it works
I’m very confident this will work
-
Inappropriate?Look Laurie you and I are in the same boat and we are getting no where with Microsoft! I just reported my problem to them today and everyday, for the past few months! I am as mad as you are!!! Man! I have tried everything!
I’m Very Frustrated!!!
-
Inappropriate?I had my daughter put the program, internet explorer 8 on a usb, then took the old one off my computer and reloaded with program from usb,,, no more problems. I think somehow a part of internet explorer program got lost. If you don't have access to another computer, then download program to a usb and see if this solves your problem also.
-
Inappropriate?i have also the same problem as you ,when i enter facebook it suddenly close dun no y i hate it when this happen
I’m irritated
-
Inappropriate?nothing has helped, im sooo sick of this :( i didnt mind beacuse it would still work on my laptop but now our laptop died! aahhhh
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem and it doesn't do it on anyother page but facebook
-
Inappropriate?I installed Mozilla Firefox and now use this instead of IE. Since doing this, Facebook has worked fine and I have had no problem with it shutting down. Try this link...www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/upgrade...
