Why does Facebook provide no way for users to delete all their own account information?
While FB *does* provide the option to deactivate your account, it keeps all that data on their servers at its own discretion. This sends the message to users that they don't own their own information once it's inside Facebook. Everything, from photos, events, and messages is retained by FB for its own internal use (though it's privacy policy does limit what it can legitimately use it for). This doesn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, to say the least!
It's also being said in some quarters that this violates the UK's Data Protection Act, a rule designed to limit how long companies retain consumer data to a minimum. By it's policy Facebook doesn't seem to really care.
Why not give users the ability to delete their own information?

Inappropriate?I tried to do this with Myspace, but it's the same story. They keep all your personal data: Work history, education history, friend history, etc. That's pretty terrifying because I no longer have control of who's exchanging it at that point.
Exchange privacy for convenience and you can't ever take it back.
I’m crapping on data mining.

Inappropriate? If you want to see scary privacy concerns about facebook, look here:

Beyond disturbing.
I’m sad companies look at people as consumers, not partners.

Inappropriate?Nice try, Andy -- you can check out, but you can never leave.
I’m trying to figure out how to delete my fb account.

Inappropriate? There *is* a way to delete your account. Courtesy of Courtney, who had to worm her way to this information via FB's overloaded email department:
"If you want your information removed from our servers, we can do this for you. However, you need to first log in, delete all profile content, and deactivate. Once you have cleared your account, let us know, and we'll take care of the rest. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."
Seems unnecessarily complicated, and given how slow customer service is to respond to normal requests, I don't understand why they're making them do this manual work when we could easily do it ourselves if given the chance.
I’m happily surprised

Inappropriate? In defense of their poor, overworked customer service people, they replied within a day. But I think it is pretty obvious why they don't want to make it easy!
-
Inappropriate? If only there was some website that could provide the customer service function Facebook desperately needs.
Oh wait!
;-P
I’m silly
-
Inappropriate? What makes you think that people at facebook will actually take the time to go through an manually delete the information?
I’m disbelieving
