Inappropriate?There is an internal cache refresh timeout of 10 minutes but we decided to avoid reloading the page automatically.

Inappropriate?What about things like the cover page - when I delete the 4 main items I'm left with a blank space - it would make the user experience a whole let better if it automatically loaded new content in place of content that's been deleted

Inappropriate?@scott that's the first thing that came to my mind also. You mark one item as read, it disappears, some ajax magic is invoked and another one takes it's place. Perfect digest.
