Middle-clicking on the feedly icon should open up a new tab
Currently the only ways to start feedly are to either type in the URL or click on the button in the top window, which takes over the current tab.
Per the firefox HIG, middle-clicking by default opens up an item in a new tab. (Try middle clicking a bookmark or this link)
