Blocking an incoming number on Fido
I keep getting called from a specific number, 1-866-921-5909, with someone trying to sell me lead generation. I've been called at least 10, maybe 20 times by now, and it's extremely annoying.
I've called them and asked them to stop (probably a mistake, but after the first dozen times I was at the end of my rope) and opened a file with the Do Not Call List with two complaints.
Yet they keep calling.
I called Fido and asked them to block this number but they say they can't.
Sounds like BS to me. What can I do about it?

Hi,
Blocking one specific number is not possible by Fido / Rogers.
Since it seems you are getting a call from a telemarketing company, you can ask them to remove you from their list and they are obliged by law to remove you.
Alternatively, you can register to the global Do-Not-Call list. More infos here:

"Blocking one specific number is not possible by Fido / Rogers."
Why not?
"Since it seems you are getting a call from a telemarketing company, you can ask them to remove you from their list and they are obliged by law to remove you."
I said I did that.

I don't think you actually read my comment based on this response, which just looks copy-and-pasted. -
Inappropriate?I apologize if my response seemed copy/pasted, I assure you it wasn't the case. I simply wanted to confirm that these were the only two options.
Note that following your request, a telemarketer have up to 30 days to remove you from their list, so the removal might not be immediate.
Fido unfortunately does not have the necessary systems in place to block phone numbers on a per-account basis.

They are located in the US and likely do not care. Apparently they are a call centre for over a hundred different companies, and they said they can't remove my number when I asked because I'd have to tell them for each company. This is a total crock of nonsense.
I'm not sure why Fido allows their number to call into the entire system, as they're basically just set up to "spam" people incessantly.
Perhaps you should investigate that option? -
Inappropriate?I did a bit of research for you.
If the telemarketing company is calling you on behalf of a Canadian company, they are bound to Canadian laws regardless where their call center is located (US or elsewhere). As such, they must follow the Do Not Call list.
If they are a telemarketing company located in, and calling on behalf of a company located in the US or elsewhere, unfortunately there's not much we can do. The CRTC cannot force foreign companies to follow Canadian laws. If this is the case, and if you feel that this company is abusive, you can always try to submit a complaint to the FCC (the American equivalent of the CRTC).
As for blocking their number at large in the system, it is not possible for legal reasons. As annoying as telemarketers might be to some of us, as long as they are respecting the laws there's not much we can do as a provider.
I hope this answers your question. -
Interesting. But what I have now are two different stories. Their story being that they aren't a single company but a shared office for literally dozens of companies.
If they are truly bound by the DNC, then I fail to understand why they are still calling me, as I've been on the DNC list since the beginning, and (as I've already stated) I've lodged two complaints with the DNC complaint hotline already.
So since they are not respecting the laws (you can check with the DNC for my complaint if not other complaints), why aren't you blocking them? Clearly you don't believe me and believe them instead. My guess is since they are creating call volume on your network, Fido is happy to turn a blind eye for now.
Answers my question? Not in the least. The bottom line is they keep calling me, so this is really unresolved until they stop. -
Inappropriate? It's pretty common for a telemarketing company to represent dozens, if not hundreds of companies. This shouldn't be an excuse for them to substract from laws and regulations.
It all comes down to the company they're calling you on behalf of. When they call you, they're calling to sell a product for a specific company... that's the customer who's responsible for managing their calling list. If they're not respecting the laws, its not up to Fido to apply the law. Its up to the CRTC/FCC for federal regulations or the police if there's criminal activities.
If you want I can have someone looking into this further. Send me your name and Fido phone number at info@fidomobile.ca quoting reference #GS012. -

But here we are, Martin.

They are in the US so they don't give a damn about Canada. I tried to get my number added to the US DNC list, but they only accept numbers in the US (naturally).
What I think we have here is an effective loophole in the system. If you want to telemarket to people in Canada, just get set up in the US.
I'm not asking you to "apply the law", I'm asking why Fido isn't blocking a single number, which is for a group set up to skirt the law.
As a customer, I'm asking you to help me fix a problem that I cannot fix.
P.S. I note that you've marked the question as "answered". It really is not answered yet. -
Inappropriate?I really feel your pain (I'm also a victim of numerous telemarketing calls every week). However as I mentionned previously we cannot block their number across the system for legal reasons.
If they are as you say a US-based telemarketing company calling on behalf of a US-based company, they are fully within the law to call you, as the CRTC's DNCL only apply to Canadian-based companies for Canadian numbers and the FCC's DNCL only apply to US-based companies for US numbers.
That's definately a loophole, but ultimately that's a political issue. The ideal would be a North American DNCL. You might want to address this to your local MP. -
Inappropriate? You claim there is a legal issue with blocking them (the irony is thick) -- what is that legal issue?
As for telling me to take it up with my MP, that's a cop-out.
