Inappropriate?I experience the same thing. James asked to be my friend, but I had to navigate to his profile page to find that out. It'd be nice to get an email or a pending friend request page. -

There actually is a notification, although it's admittedly very subtle and not too clear. When you request to be someone's friend, you will see that "Pending" status on their profile page, as you mentioned. The other user will get an alert on their profile page (in the block right below your user info, on the left). Clicking on that alert link will yield an ugly little page that will let you accept the friend request.
Functionally it works, but intuitive and elegant it's not. We're going to be working some kinks out of the alert system in general, and the friend requests in particular, in the near future.
