2.5 Auto-Upgrade Causing Favorites/Bookmarks Loss - Solution
Hey folks,
We turned on 1.x-2.5 auto-upgrades this week very briefly and immediately got reports of favorites (also known as bookmarks) missing. We've turned off the auto-updates and won't turn them back on until we've solved the issue. We apologize to anyone it affected.
Thankfully, your favorites are not gone. The issue was caused by the auto-upgrader - manual upgrading does not cause favorites loss. So the workaround for folks missing their favorites is to do a manual upgrade:
1. Download Flock 1.2.6: http://archive.flock.com/releases/1.2...
2. Shut down Flock completely
3. Run the 1.2.6 installer
4. Start Flock (your bookmarks should be back now - if they're not you may want to let us know before proceeding)
5. Download Flock 2.5: http://www.flock.com/download
6. Shut down Flock completely
7. Run the 2.5 installer
8. Start Flock
We apologize for this issue - it's something we couldn't avoid, but it's nonetheless very scary and upsetting for you (I would be very bummed if my favorites were gone). We will be fixing this issue before exposing anyone else to it...I'm sorry you folks had to have this bad experience.
Please let me know if the above fix doesn't work.

Inappropriate? Why??? Why would I want to UPGRADE to a version that jsut wipped out my favorites?!! WHAT was wrong with old version??? I liked it. YOU get complaints?? Bored and had nothing to do??? Inappropriate?Hey OldMan,
I understand your frustration...thinking your favorites are gone is a scary thing (I'd be furious). But your favorites aren't gone, and we've made significant improvements to the latest version of Flock, based on feedback from Flock community members like you. It'd been widely enjoyed by people using it, and I hope you will find it enjoyable as well. It also has the latest security updates needed to keep you safe online. Please give it a chance, and let us know if you find any issues or frustrations - we may be able to work through them.

Inappropriate? Please get your stuff straight before auto-upgrading in the future. I do not appreciate having to do your job for you.
-
Inappropriate?Hey John,
I totally understand your frustration - I would be really angry if I thought I lost my bookmarks. We absolutely value your data and we test all elements of our releases extensively at Flock.
Unfortunately, we can't test everything. Your copy of Flock has unique favorites, extensions, cookies, etc. Your computer has different things on it than ours. So we can't reproduce your exact conditions, and that's why we can't always catch these bugs. It's a bummer, but it's a fact.
We do what we can to limit the damage if there is a bug, and we stopped auto-updates as soon as we heard reports of bugs. We obviously won't turn them back on until we've fixed this issue. I'm truly sorry you were one of the few caught in the fire, and I hope that the instructions I've posted on this site will bring your bookmarks back.
I'm sorry that you feel that the burden is on you - you're right, you've had to deal with more than a browser user should have to. Unfortunately that's just how it worked out this time...we'll continue doing what we can to improve the situation so this doesn't crop up again.

I followed the instructions of upgrading to Flock 1.2.6. I can say now it's finally launching and working, but there is the question of my favorites!!!!!!!! They're all gone, every last single one of them. What a bunch of BS this has been, plus costed me a half day of work, not to mention I have to now find and repopulate my favorites - of course in a better browsers. My friend warned me not to use Flock months ago. I only wish I had followed his advice. -
Inappropriate?Hmmm , Auto upgrade flock to 2.5 =>> Lost Favorites
download : version 1.2.6 OK
download : version 2.5 (ups "downloader" blocked by Norton Protection Center) ?
Installed V 1.2.6 AND my Favorites was back
used Internet explore to download Flock V2.5 (Very Scary)
Installed Flock V2.5
NOW Flock is working now (downloader is to)
Thank you for your help
/Frank
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate? This happened before. Not a problem if you backup your favorites. In 2.5 you can make a direct backup or you can save them in an HTML file. Then you can do a direct restore or an import into the new version.
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate?I'm having this problem, but on a mac. The link for 1.2.6 is an exe, so this fix won't help me. :(
-
Inappropriate?Hi Evan
I too am having the same issue as alot of others in regards to my favourites disappearing or hiding. I have tried your solution but it does not seem to work for me, aka it doesn't recover all my favourties or what I had before upgrading.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but your instructions are pretty self explanatory.
I'm running Windows XP Version 5.1 Service Pack 3, I can't remember what version Flock browser I was running before the upgrade.
I've tried this a couple of times and now am abit over it. Starting to get frustratred, but if you could get back with a solution to rectify my problem and advise asap.
Cheers
Jolene
I’m over it.
-
Inappropriate?what is the solution for Mac users?
FYI I didnt use the autoupgrade and I lost ALL personal settings on two different computers when I installed 2.5.
I’m sad
-
Hey Victoria,
We have turned off auto-updates so nobody else will experience this issue...we won't turn them back on until it is fixed.
As for a simpler workaround, it looks like this is really the easiest way to recover those files. It's obviously not ideal, but because of how the data got mucked up this is the solution. Everyone who has tried it has reported success.
We are very sorry this situation occurred, but it is what it is at this point - we're doing what we can to make things easier in the future.

OMG..... OK so I did as you said, and now after the first step, installing the old version ALL MY FAVORITES HAVE BEEN ERASED. I am freaking out here folks!!! On the plus side, I just tried favoriting a site and it showed up on my "My World " favorites widget (which was not working before)....but what am I supposed to do about the favorites I have now lost? !!!!!!!!Help please!!!!!!!!! -
Hey Victoria,
Sorry to hear about the issue, let's see what we can do.
You said that after installing the old version, your favorites were erased...does that mean you already had your favorites? If so, why did you downgrade? I'm just trying to understand when you favorites disappeared. Let me know, thanks!

As I stated, my favorites would not load in the widgets or in my sidebar. So I followed your advise installed the old version and all favorites and passwords are gone. This bites. Since it took you 3 days to respond, I am going to go ahead and proceed to the next update. -
Hey Victoria,
Are you saying that your favorites were still available via the dropdown menu, but ceased being available after you installed the old version of Flock?
Thanks for the clarification,

Inappropriate?I actually ran across a similar solution earlier and implemented it. By that time I'd forgotten about my post completely. That solution included exporting your Favorites once you'd reinstalled the earlier version then importing them once you'd installed 2.5. Of course this was on the manual install. Pre-autoupdate.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate? My favorites disappeared tonight and I'm really mad. I tried your solution of downloading 1.2.6. No joy. The favorites did not show back up. I tried changing the sqlite3.dll which was the only thing similar to another tip. Flock wouldn't open so I had to change it back. HELP!
I’m angry & frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Evan,
Hold up a minute here!!
I did NOT have the previous version of Flock - ever. 2.5 is the first version I installed.. because I'm NEW to Flock and auditing for a Mashable review.
So, I did NOT have a the so-called "caused by the auto-upgrader" issue. I didn't auto-upgrade.
Then, you said "manual upgrading does not cause favorites loss."
Hello... again, I did a CLEAN, manual install. And yet, my Favorites are not appearing in the Favorites column.
So, now what!?!? -
Inappropriate? And to add to the confusion, stated in my post above, the ONLY thing appearing in the Favorites Sidebar is............. my History.
Even when attempting to Search Favorites, none ever appear.
History in Favorites? A bug is a bug is a bug... fix it.
See screenshot.
I’m absolutely frustrated
-
@ChristinaEve,
Since you said you didn't have any previous version of Flock, and that it's your first clean install, the issue that you're experiencing seems to be different. Hence, I'd strongly suggest to start a new thread specific to your problem, instead, to avoid confusion.
As for your issue, could you please tell us if you chose to import from any other browser when you first install it? Also, could you please disable all extensions you might have?
Thanks,
Sophie -
Inappropriate?Okay fine .. I'll go on a wild goose chase trying to remedy an issue which Flock is addressing here.
It's obviously a mistake by Flock to assume it's due to an auto-upgrade - because the missing Favorites occur with new *and* upgraded users.
Even previous users of Flock v1.2.6, who followed the above instructions could not locate their Favorites in the Sidebar.
As for your issue, could you please tell us if you chose to import from any other browser when you first install it?
Only Firefox 3.
Also, could you please disable all extensions you might have?
That was one of the first things I did when trying to troubleshoot this; did not work.
I can SEE (below) what issue is causing the problem, but I can't remedy it. If anyone at Flock would take the time to look at the Favorites parameters in about:config, they could figure out the conflict in the action.
-
Hey ChristinaEve,
I appreciate your frustration (I certainly would be upset if my favorites weren't showing up) but I can assure you that the issue in this thread was caused by an auto-upgrade...we've verified this with many, many Flockstars and we have a suggested fix for them. You're experiencing something equally frustrating, but different altogether.
As the issue you're experiencing has nothing to do with the 2.5 auto-upgrade issue, I'd like to ask that you open a new topic about this issue. We'd be more than happy to continue troubleshooting with you there, and hopefully find and crush whatever bug you're experiencing.
Thanks for your help keeping our support pages clean and helpful!

Inappropriate? What's the solution for Mac users? The link posted was for windows, but I need it for a mac. I need my favorites back.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? Also, I don't get the option of going back. If I am navigating on a website and want to go back a page it won't allow me to, it's not an option.
-
Inappropriate? This didn't work for me. I installed 1.2.6 and got favorites back but obviously not all the recent favorites and bookmarks, only those from that version and older. I then installed 2.5.2 and nothing, bookmarks and favorites not there.
-
Inappropriate?Hello, my version of Flock is now 2.5.2, but I was having this sort of problem also with 2.5. However, not all my favorites go missing, only random ones. I had tagged them, placed them in a folder, and then when I go back to find them, they are saved as you can see in the below image:
So essentially they are still starred because they are recognized through online favorites (I have my delicious account saved), but they no longer exist in local favorites (not even unsorted favorites). I can't distinguish however which go missing at what times and what is causing the problem. I end up having to reopen all my recent delicious links and verifying each clicking the star button. If there is not an immediate solution, would there be a way I could make a query for a smart favorites folder which would delineate which bookmarks are located in online favorites but not in local favorites? -
Inappropriate?Firefox can update without causinmg problems like this.
-

Inappropriate? Is this one okay for MAC ?
http://archive.flock.com/releases/1.2... -
Inappropriate?Okay i'm using flock v. 1.2.6 right now and my favorites haven't reappeared...
This is getting tiring seriously...
Not only that but I had only lost part of my favourites using v. 2.5.2 but now they're completely gone !
I’m frustrated
