flock shuts down every time I try to open, I get an error message.
I just downloaded flock 2.0 and every time I try and open the program I get a error message that flock.exe has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. I noticed that the program is still running in the background but if I click on the "send report" button it shuts flock down.

There's nothing wrong with the Flock updates - however, sometimes during the update process your data can get corrupted. This is something we're actively working to minimize...in the meantime, the best steps for anyone with similar problems are listed on our Tune Up Page at http://www.flock.com/update/2.0.3/en-...
If you've already tried those steps to no avail, please post here and we'll try some other steps.

Inappropriate?Hi reo,
Something has clearly gone wrong here. At this stage I recommend uninstalling Flock, rebooting your computer and reinstalling. There isn't any way to remote diagnose what specifically has happened here, so I suggest starting there.
I'm sorry this has happened to you.
clayton
-
Do I need to save any files (favorites etc) before uninstalling Flock? -
Inappropriate?grrr. Dang.
It's possible that your profile was not deleted when you uninstalled. Let's check and make sure it is gone. the folder is called 'flock', and in XP it lives under \documents and settings\application data\
The folder needs to be deleted, and then you should reboot again and then run Flock. If you are using Mac or Win Vista and need help locating this folder, let me know. If the folder doesn't delete cleanly, let me know that too (ie if Windows tells you it cannot delete the folder).
Again, my apologies for this inconvenience.

Inappropriate?Sorry Clayton, been there done that. Had no problems deleting the profile folder. Actually i didnt read this thread starter first properly as I get an error message - Already open. Its not

Inappropriate?I'm in the same boat with Vista 32-bit. As soon as I downloaded v2.0.2, Flock would not start. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, used system restore, but nothing works. Any help would be good.
-
http://www.flock.com/node/61805
Can you try running Flock in safe mode, disabling extensions and themes? Instructions are at the above link. -
Inappropriate?Me too, on Vista-32bit. I've never had problems with Flock before. I just tried running Flock in safe-mode, but with the same result.
-
Also, I have tried going back to a previous version of Flock, which doesn't seem to work. -
Hi Nuutti,
Since you have the problem also in safe-mode, could you read Clayton's note in http://getsatisfaction.com/flock/topi...
Bruno -
Inappropriate?I have exactly the same problem, upgraded to 2, wouldn't work, rebooted, restored to an earlier time, previous version will now not work either, I'm on Vista home premium
-
Inappropriate? My son upgraded to 2 and his works perfectly fine, he has vista home basic, we are both on the same broadband network
-
Mine is Vista Home Premium also. This morning I uninstalled 2, found Flock 1 on the internet and dowloaded it. It works fine. I think I'll wait for the fix from Flock before trying to install v2.0 again. -
I also have Vista Home Premium... After several restarts/uninstalls etc I have an earlier version of Flock working again. -
Inappropriate?Hmm. It sounds like all folks effected are on Vista. We are doing some additional upgrade testing to see if we can reproduce the problem (and once we can repro it we can get it fixed). Upgrade testing passed in Vista before we released but this looks like more than coincidence.
I will post what we find out...
Is anyone experiencing this lame behavior not using Vista?
We apologize for this significant inconvenience.

I'm not on Vista and having the same problem, -
Hi Laura,
It would be great if you are able to tell me what operating system you are using, and specifically what the error you encounter says. Also, did you upgrade from 1.x version of Flock, or is this a new install?
Any help is greatly appreciated. -
i am using XP -
I'm on OS X Leopard, I have version 2.0.2. It just started happening today even before I updated to the fix that fixed the facebook error. -
I'm using OSX 10.4.11 and having this problem too. -
Okay, I started on Flock 2.0, using Vista Home Premium 32-bit, and it was fine, until last weekend.
Now I'm having the same problems as t'other people here.
If Flock 1.X is working... where can I find it to download? -
XP SP 2 -
Inappropriate?I also managed to download an older version English language Flock 1.2 yesterday and it is working fine. Will wait until the problems are resolved before trying 2 again, although why does it work perfectly fine on my sons Vista basic?
-
GenieDi,
We have many thousands of Vista users on 2.0.2 with no problems, and the issues you and others found here would have never made it from our shop to the user if all tests hadn't passed (and we test a lot). So there is clearly something that happens rarely, and you (and the others on this thread) were victimized by it. Often in these cases it is some other application on your machine that Flock 2.0 conflicts with and Windows doesn't know how to handle the conflict. So unfortunately it happens often that two seemingly identical machines have different results. Makes it very hard to find problems like this!
We are working around the clock on these Vista issues, and again I apologize for the time that got wasted on this!

Inappropriate?Hello Reo,
Can you tell me if you have the 1.8 version of Cooliris (piclens) extension (it can cause this problem and the Cooliris 1.9 fixes the problem)? If you do you can delete it from Flock\Browser\Profiles\xxxx.default\extensions and resinstall the new Cooliris/Piclens extension.
Bruno -
Inappropriate?Hi Shawn,
I you get the message "Already open" when it's not, make sure you deleted the Browser directory (on Windows), not just its children.
Bruno -
Inappropriate?I also had this problem.
Go to start menu then All Programs there you should find Flock. Start flock in "Safe Mode" go to "tools" then to Add-ons find "Cooliris" which is "Pic-lens" uninstall it. Restart your flock browser then you should have no problem starting flock the regular way.
Keep in mind this is only temporary until Cooiris fixes this problem.
Danny Vera -
Inappropriate?Hi Danny,
Thanks for posting this. Can you try the new Cooliris version 1.9? I found that it fixes the problem.

Inappropriate? It's not just Vista, it's happening on Ubuntu also. I also have a partition with Debian sid on it, and that worked fine for a long time, with 2.0, and earlier (though i had to monkey with my profiles a bit, which is understandable). I like flock, (except the blogging app, it's a bit functionality-poor, IMO), and I want to be able to use it again :).
BTW, all I get is flock crashing with a SIGILL (signal illegal instruction; check your kill manuals ;).
=====
(me@somewhere)[132] % flock
Illegal instruction
[1] 10425 exit 132 flock
=====
That's me trying things out, one after the other ;). That's why the repeated exit 132 messages.
I've tried deleting the lucene/ dir; moving the extensions out of extensions/ ; deleting some generated files, compacting the places.sqlite DB file (foxmarks on FF3 until a recent update would sometimes make it go wonky, I found that it behaved afterwards); making a new profile; installing libstdc++5 (sunbird complained about it, thought it might just be that).
I'm not using cooliris.

Did you try deleting the lucene folder? With Flock shut down, delete lucene, then start again. On XP is lives at:
c:\documents and settings\[your user name]\application data\flock\profiles\[random number].default\lucene -
Inappropriate?I have Windows XP and still have the same problem. I now have to use FireFox for my browser. The old Flock worked fine. I tried to revert back in time thinking the old Flock might come back, but no luck there.

Inappropriate?I just "migrated" from earlier Flock 1.x .. in hope of improvement, and out of curiosity.
I have many settings that I depend upon Flock to remember for me, and many accounts, which I don't know the passwords to.
I have this error on XP! SP 2
I uninstalled the plug-in that had the compatibility issue, and nothing. Do I loose my settings if I reinstall?
I would like to know how I could re-roll to the old Flock I had before.
This is a major inconvenience for me. I know the service is free, but so are the other browsers. Help me deal with this, or I will deal with it the only way I know how, by renouncing Flock 2.
***EDIT***
God, that scared the pants off of me! :/
Thanks Clayton and Cindy for the solution. -
Inappropriate?I deleted the new flock and reinstalled, I didn't loose anything but still get the error
message. I also deleted the "lucene", that didn't work either.. Dave

Check your Tools -> Add-ons for any plug-ins that are not compatible with Flock 2 (or FireFox 3)
Common, we have to make yours work to! :P -
Inappropriate?I've been having the same problem. I reinstalled 2.0.3 twice but never deleted the 'lucene' folder. I just did and now flock is working fine! ;^)
By the way, I'm running XP SP3.
Thanks for the tip!

-
Inappropriate? My version of 2.0.3 continues to crash. I tried un-installing, re-installing, then rebooting. I tried system restore, but my computer won't restore. I tried posting on this forum using Internet explorer, and I couldn't. I looked for a phone number to call. None. I looked for an email. None.
What should I do? I hate forums. I never have any idea when they're answered. I just want to log in to flock, because it's a great browser WHEN IT'S WORKING.
I couldn't send my messages through an Internet Explorer browser. I had to download another browser -- google -- just to send this message.
I also tried that one suggestion of deleting files, but the path given wasn't correct. I searched my system and couldn't find a file named lucene. HELP ME
-
Inappropriate?I found "lucene" after quite a bit of searching ( don't ask me how tho) and deleted it.
I did the same things you did too, to no avail. I even tried to get the old flock back, but couldn't. No reply's to my e-mails either. The old flock was great, why did they screw it up? I guess we will have to keep watching this page and see if flock comes up with a new version that works.
I’m frustrated

I found Lucene. She was hanging out in a bar in a seedy section of town. I told her that I had to delete her. She didn't like it and tried to get away, but to no avail. I would not have found Lucene if I didn't click "view hidden folders" under my computer's organize-folder and search options-view.
Flock works fine now. I'm going to celebrate by opening a bunch of tabs from my long-lost bookmarks.
And to think that Lucene is the cause of this. Let her rest in peace and never return. -
LOL Tim. So glad it worked out for you. -
Inappropriate?Great!!

Inappropriate?I'm on Mac OSX 10.4.11. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but to no avail. Flock doesn't actually throw up an error message when it crashes, just goes poof and closes itself. Unless I open it from terminal.
Tried running in safe mode, and got this:
~ cander2$ /Applications/flock.app/Contents/MacOS/flock -safe-mode
pure virtual method called

No, you won't lose your personal settings -- your profile is not stored in the same location as the program files. -

Inappropriate? For the record, i was able to open Flock in
Safe Mode. Working Perfect. Sweet -
wow it crashed for me even in safe mode -
Inappropriate? What a pain in the butt, I had pretty much the same problems this morning. Was running Flock 2.0.3, all fine till I installed cooliris, then crash. No more Flock, tried safe mode, deleting lucene, registry repair, uninstalling reinstalling, reboot all to no avail.
Finally I searched and manually deleted all folders called flock, them reinstalled. And I am now back up and running with flock. How ever I now have to reinstall my addons and reconfigure flock – 3 hours gone.
People at flock – killing all settings and addons and re-instaling is not a solution. I understand you cannot support addons but cooliris killed flock. This issue was not about cooliris not working. The least you could do is to put a brick through their window....

You have to go slowly through each folder of all flock folders. You will see one with componets, script, and a lot of .dll's in it. Look at all, you will see lucene.dll erase it and restart! -
Inappropriate?I just had this problem this week. I was running the most recent auto update of flock (not sure if it was 2.02 or .03) and it was fine until it just broke.
I was in the middle of a browsing session in the afternoon, hadn't even restarted the browser or computer in a few days, and there had been no new software/plug-ins/ whatever.
I reinstalled flock (download and install no nuking of the flock folders) and the same problem persists. I just can't figure out the mechanism that could cause this, since I have no plug-ins, installed no software in the past week, etc.. no obvious way for a bug to crop up, flock just crashed in the middle of a session and then won't open.
Just deleted lucene, will try to reboot and see what happens...
I’m frustrated
-
I renamed "lucene" to "oldlucene", rebooted, and started flock.. it's alive!!! -

Inappropriate?Get rid of ALL of the lettering "LUCENE", send it to trash.
Then reboot.http://getsatisfaction.com/flock/topi... -
Inappropriate?http://getsatisfaction.com/flock/topi...
Go into all folders on PC where you have all folders for flock: open all slowly look for any file that has word "lucene" in it and DELETE it.
Go back to your PC dasboard and Reboot! That should take care of it.
Be sure to let this group if you have trouble and we would like to heir if it work's for you. May it go well with you!! -
Inappropriate?I've done searches, went through every folder in Flock and cannot find that word anywhere and my version of Flock crashes everytime I open it. I've wasted over an hour already tonight trying to get Flock to work and have gotten nowhere. It's nice that someone is offering suggestions but it's obvious that "The Company" has no clue if this has been going on this long. Most companies that I know of would fire anyone who could not fix a problem after 3 months. I suggest Flock start at the top.
I’m totally disgusted that "The Company" is not responding to these problems. Wake up Flock, you're going to lose lots of users over this!
-
Inappropriate?Hey Steve,
I can't see any reason that folder wouldn't exist...it exists for everyone else, and is often the cause of the type of issues mentioned in this thread.
Perhaps you are looking in the wrong spot. Flock has two locations: the installation and the profile. Lucene will be in your profile folder.
Here are the locations for profile folders on different OS's:
Mac OS X:
The profile folder is in a folder named "Flock," and you'll find it on this path:
(your home folder)>Library>Application Support>Flock
Linux:
~/.flock/browser/
Windows 2000 and XP:
C: -- look to the left hand side. There you will see "System Tasks" and please choose "Show the Contents of this Drive". That way all of the hidden data should show.
-- from there go into Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\Flock
Windows Vista:
C:\Users\[your login profile name]\AppData\Roaming\Flock\Browser\Profile
If you are absolutely sure you've looked in the appropriate folder, we may need to have you send us your profile. If there's no lucene folder, that means you have a different (and much stranger) issue than the other folks in this thread.

Inappropriate?uninstall it and tick remove all history(whatever it says beside the little tick box blah blah blah :P) in the uninstall then try reinstalling it I started with 1.1 upgrade to 1.2.7 then installed beta and got it to work on vista ultimate I'm working on it but I lost everything sadly and if you try to go back to using 1.2.7 it'll crash too if you don't start from scratch it took me a week but I figured it out and when they say delete the one folder I didn't even have it and it still crashed if you wanna try that this new beta kinda saddened me a little
I’m sad

Follow this path to find your extensions:
C:\\ >> Users >> [Yourname] >> Appdata >> Roaming >> Flock >> Browser >> Profile >> [xxxx.default] >> extensions.
In Extension folder, delete the offending extension.

Before if I wanted to keep the pages up with out adding the to favs I had to leave the brower open... Oh well I'm back to FIREFOX now....
if your flock is working now DO NOT DOWNLOAD the update.. it wolnt work..
you would think they check this stuff before the put it out for download.. -
