Flock very slow at opening and closing
I have used Flock for a long time, but since upgrading to Flock 2 it takes ages to open and close. I timed it today and it took 45 seconds to open. Often when closing I have to 'force quit' because it just hangs. I tried emptying out all my feeds in case that was slowing it down but it made no difference.
I'm running an Intel iMac OSX 10.4.11 and have the latest Flock.
Can you suggest anything that may be causing it?

Inappropriate?Hi beetle,
Do you have any extensions installed? Sometimes they can slow down the browser. Try running Flock in safe mode and see if it works better for you.
Let us know how that goes,

Inappropriate?I know this doesn't make much sense, but I disabled my extensions and it wouldn't re-start. I had to force quit again. It took 53 seconds to open. I enabled my extensions again and quit. This time it started in 16 seconds. That's the quickest it's ever started. I quit and restarted again and it took 8 seconds! That is lightening fast for me.
I just tried again and got 7 seconds. It's also quitting now without having to force quit.
Any explanation? I have no idea if it will continue opening at that speed.

I’m unsure

Inappropriate? It's good to hear that the browser is opening/closing faster for you now. Browser extensions vary in quality. Some are well written but others may consume a lot of memory or cause the browser to crash. Chris' suggestion was to disable these extensions to compare Flock by itself against Flock+extensions.
Some cases of needing to Force Quit might be due to these extensions not exiting well.
If you see speed issues again, you might try deleting your lucene cache. Locate your Flock profile folder via the Flock FAQs and delete your "lucene" folder. This will remove information about your prior browsing history that is used when you search via the Flock's search bar. Since you mentioned having Flock for a while this may help. -
Inappropriate?I'm on a MacBook Pro using OSX 10.5.6, and I've tried the deletion of the "lucene folder" and experienced temporary relief. Today, however, I am going back to Firefox. I love Flock, but like Beetle, the slowness in opening, closing and page loads has finally ground me down. Believe it or not, it took me more than 10 mins to write this note because of the incessant Apple beachball! If someone finally works out how to fix this, please email me on jembwilliams@gmail.com and I will come back to the Flock.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?I think I may have to move to Firefox also. The faster opening time was very brief. It was back to the awful waiting times the next day! I have tried everything, even emptying out all my feeds, to no avail.
I'm guessing this might only be the Mac version.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Beetle - one last thing to try ... I completely uninstalled ... and I mean completely using AppCleaner (freeware) ... and then I started from scratch. I went from 1.0, to eco-Flock and then to 2.0. Could be I had some gunk in there that was reducing smooth functioning of the browser. Anyway, so far so good - after 4 days!
Good luck -
Inappropriate?Oh, that sounds hopeful. What did you do with all your settings, bookmarks, feeds etc?
-
Inappropriate? If you want to try running with a fresh profile (in other words, return to the factory default settings), that's probably the most surefire way to get Flock running smooth again. First, you probably want to back up your feeds and favorites.
Backing up Feeds:
(1) Open the Feeds sidebar
(2) Click the Feed Options button, and select Export Feeds from the menu.
(3) Save flock-export.opml to a safe location.
Backing up Favorites:
(1) Go to Favorites / Organize Favorites
(2) Click Import and Backup / Export HTML...
(3) Save bookmarks.html to a safe location
With those things done, you now want to remove your Flock profile:
(1) Quit Flock entirely
(2) Locate your profile folder and move it (make sure to move the whole "Flock" folder on Vista) to a backup location for safekeeping.
(3) Restart Flock. It should now be reset to factory defaults.
To import Feeds:
(1) Open the Feeds sidebar
(2) Select Feed Options / Import Feeds...
(3) Find the flock-export.opml file you saved earlier and import that.
To import Favorites:
(1) Go to Favorites / Organize Favorites
(2) Select Import and Backup / Import HTML...
(3) Find the bookmarks.html file you saved earlier and import that.
That should do it. (Note that these steps assume you have 2.x installed, but a similar procedure would work for 1.x.)

Inappropriate? Thanks Chris. I have just done this by doing a fresh install of Flock. It seems to be OK at the moment. Hopefully this will be the fix I needed.
I have also thinned out some of the dead accounts I had this way too.
Thanks for the help. It looks like I'm still with Flock after all :O)
I’m happy
