Add support for microformat object detection?
I currently use the Safari Microformats Plugin in WebKit and I love it. It's both gratifying to see content that I can extract from everyday webpages into iCal and Address Book, but it also suggests greater possibilities in SSBs.
I had a couple ideas...
I had a couple ideas...
- On finding an hcard, right click to "Add Contact to Address Book" (like you might when you right-click on a photo and pick "Add Image to iPhoto Library"). Bonus: "Open Contact in Address Book" -- based on URL, name, email address lookup in Address Book store.
- Same thing for iCal objects, but "Add Event to iCal".
- Make microformatted objects available to Fluid and Userscripts. I think Operator does this for Firefox now, so there's existing code that you code inherit from...

Inappropriate?Hey chris, in general, i think this is a great idea!
Recognizing and using Microformats, RDFa, and other metadata is def something I'd like to add to Fluid. I would add GRDDL to that list if I thought anyone was using it :-|
I have mixed feelings about the UI for the Safari microformats plugin tho... part of me thinks it's exposing a bit too much technical detail to the user... do users need to know or care that the current page has 'microformats' on it? I lean pretty strongly towards 'no' on that question. On the other hand, Safari tells users that the current page has 'RSS' and why they heck should users know what that means either? so there *is* a precedent.
I had a slightly more subtle approach in mind... Basically, I'd like to do a Fluid cocoa plugin similar to Xobni (http://xobni.com) that integrates a Fluid SSB with the native address book & iCal store with a sexy/social twist. the plugin would be nice for gmail, yahoo mail, facebook, and many others... This plugin would scan pages for microfomats/metadata and offer to add them to the local AB or cal.
I guess my point is that I see microformat detection as an important part of a larger feature or plugin... my problem is that that larger feature or plugin could take one of soooo many different forms or directions.. that I'm a bit paralyzed at the moment... and therefore have been letting the idea simmer a bit while i work on other things...
Chris, Xobni reminds me a lot of your neat-o ole Flock AddressBook designs. Wonder if they took any inspiration from you?

Inappropriate?Well, the RSS in the URL bar is a precedent, but I agree with you that the microformats icon in particular won't mean much to anyone. I also agree that exposing the detection of objects in a page isn't really something that will necessarily make sense for a lot of people, which is why I'm proposing the right click integration point... similar to how Camino handles right-clicking on email address links in web pages.
What I'm also proposing is Fluid doing the hard work of detecting hcards, hcalendars, etc, and then making them available to userscripts and other javascript programmers. In particular, it'd be cool to start to take advantage of Operator User Scripts within Fluid:

Oh, and meanwhile, support for "Activities" would also be neat:

I’m excited
