Attempting to load Hacker News results in about:blank page
Hi,
I'm trying to create an app to view Hacker News (http://
news.ycombinator.com), and when Fluid creates the app and I try to run
it, it just shows an "about:blank" page.
Here's what I type in:
URL: http://news.ycombinator.com
Name: HackerNews
Location: Applications
Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance.

i think your the ssb is confused cuz it loaded about:blank the very first time you ran it (for whatever reason.. maybe hacker news was momentarily down)... (long story, but Fluid has to know the *actual* first URL resolved/loaded on first run so it can determine the url whitelist. the one you entered... cuz what you *think* is the final url is often not the actual final url, and fluid really needs to know the real one) any how... delete the prefs file and try again... OR give it a different "Name" when you create it. it will work this time
prefs file:
/Users/<your-username>/Library/Preferences/com.fluidapp.FluidInstance.HackerNews</your-username>

Inappropriate?I'm able to create one here with no problem... Are you sure HackerNews wasn't momentarily down? How many times have you tried?
-
Inappropriate?I've tried about five times. When I go to Hacker News in Firefox, it loads fine. I've even updated Fluid, and I get the same problem.
I'm running Leopard with Fluid 0.9.2.1.
Thanks,

Inappropriate?oh and don't be angry! take a deep breath, and find yr happy place! ;0]

Inappropriate?Brilliant! That worked. Thanks a lot.
BTW, in terms of coolness, your program is tied with Quicksilver in my mind (which is a good thing). -
Inappropriate?Just thought I'd let you know I had a similar problem with Gmail. However, the Fluid app worked for several weeks, then one day, just opened about:blank.
Remaking that app didn't help (as I called it the same thing) but deleting the prefs file has me back in business. Thank goodness, as I can't handle not having Fluid running my apps.
Thanks so much.

Inappropriate?hey jason, there are several ways to fix the issue... the issue was prolly that the gmail load failed one time for some reason (you were offline or had a bad net connection or gmail was down).. and you got redirected to about:blank. then you prolly quit the app. by default, Fluid has 'session restore' turned on.
next time you launch the app, it will reload the last page (which in this case was "about:blank". so for future reference, you have several options at that point:
- re-navigate to Gmail (just like you would in safari.. show the toolbar (capsule button in top right) type 'gmai.com' in to the location bar type 'return').
- re-navigate to 'home' : cmd-shift-h
- throw away preferences and relaunch the ssb (or recreate it if you want). like all os x apps, prefs for fluid live in: /Users/<my-username>/Library/Preferences/com.fluidapp.FluidInstance.<my-ssb-name>
in the meantime, I will look into never storing 'about:blank' in session restore (although some useers might actually *want* that, but it obviously confuses some other users).
thanks,
todd</my-ssb-name></my-username>

Wow. Thanks so much for the extra info. I have to say, GetSatisfaction rocks for allowing a conversation like this to happen so easily.
And again, FLUID is AWESOME. Thanks so much and keep up the good work. -
thx Jason, I'm really glad you find Fluid so useful! Stay tuned, we're just getting started! (much more to come!)
