i agree that would be very nice... the details are quite complicated, but basically apple has a public api for something called "StatusItems" and a private API for something called "MenuExtras". all of the apple items are MenuExtras. Fluid actually creates StatusItems, not MenuExtras.
true MenuExtras have many more features than StatusItems... like cmd-dragging. It is possible to create a MenuExtra, but it is a bit more involved and it requires using private APIs that you are not supposed to use outside of Apple.
So.... I may try to do this eventually, but for now, I'm going to stick with the normal StatusItem API cuz it's safer/officially sanctioned.

Inappropriate?I agree too, it would be useful to have this - at the moment GMail's window can only be stretched to fill the screen width to the left of the SSB menu icon, which is a bit restrictive.
