open links in background tab
I use a Google Reader SSB and would like it if when I click a link, it would open in a background tab rather than Firefox. I've tried to accomplish this, but have had no luck.
I used a desktop rss reader before, and had hoped to get the same functionality with a ssb & Reader so my feeds would sync on different computers. If this function was added I think that this would be the perfect rss reader.

Inappropriate?well gee... dont be dejected!!!
out of the box, all of these actions will open a new tab in the background:
- command-click
- middle button click (ball-click for Apple Mighty Mouse)
- right click - select Open Link in new Tab
also, see the Tabs Preference Window Pane for more settings. -
Inappropriate?oh! also to make the link open in the SSB rather than in Firefox:
Preferences Window -> Advanced -> select "Allow Browsing to Any URL" -
Inappropriate? That's OK, but it's not perfect -- Google Reader allows you to use 'v' to view the current story (i.e, browse to it) -- and by default it opens in a foreground tab. In order to get it to open in a background tab within the Fluid window, you need to use the mouse.
I’m mildly unimpressed

Inappropriate?I've gotten it to work now with your suggestions, and appreciate your help. However I think it would be much better if there were a way to make it open in the background tab with a click rather than a command click.
I know this is picky, I've just been spoiled from years of custom tab behavior from Firefox.
I’m better than before

Inappropriate?I just decided to leave NetNewsWire to use Google Reader and I found it strange that there's just no way to open new tabs in background by default. This is obviously something that need's to be added.
I’m sad

I had this same question; the above answer didn't help. I think what you're looking for is preferences, behavior, "Links sent to default browser: open in the background". This emulated the behavior of NNW for me. -
I had this same question; Joe's answer didn't help - links opened in a background tab in FF, but FF still jumped to the front. I think what you're looking for is preferences, behavior, "Links sent to default browser: open in the background". This emulated the behavior of NNW for me. -
Inappropriate? This was the only thing keeping me from switching to Google Reader, but one simple tweak to my Firefox config file and voila! Tabs open in the background:

This is probably an issue better solved by the browser than Google anyway.
I’m thankful
