2005 Mountaineer Peeling Paint Problem
I have a 2005 Mountaineer with 20,000 miles and garage kept and now have paint peeling from my roof which should be no surprise to Ford considering all the complaints I have found on the internet.
I brought it back to my dealer, who made it seem as if he never heard of the problem before and sent me over to Ford Customer Care (in this case it was Ford Customer Doesn't Care).
I called customer care and after they kept me on hold, came back and told me it was out of warranty and they would do nothing at all. I then took it to my body shop who told me it was a factory error and if you look at the undercoat you can see there is no real primer and the surface is shinny so the paint won't stick. To repair the roof would cost $800 because they would have to strip all the paint down to the metal, prime if properly and then repaint it.
He did warn me that this can happen on other parts of the vehicle as well. From what I see on the internet this is the case with many.
Do we need to write to our congressman to let them know that Ford does not deserve any of our tax money to bail them out, when they make such a shoddy product. They obviously know it is an issue and has turned their back on all of us.
I understand they are not going to recall the vehicles because it is not a safety issue, so that means the hundreds of thousands of vehicles they put out over the years with this problem will end up as junk because the consumer won't be able to sell them or repair them.
Shame on you, how can a company like Ford not know how to paint a car after all these years? How can you turn people down that are now stuck with these defective vehicles and will never buy an American made car again. Wonder why your business is in the toilet, ever hear of word of mouth advertising or customer satisfaction. How many lost sales will you have from your inability to paint a car properly? Unbelievable, and yet these automotive executives can fly in a corporate jet and get paid millions of dollars each year and not fix a simple problem like making the paint stick to the vehicle. Only in America can this happen.

Inappropriate?I have a 2004 Mountaineer with the same problem. This will be the 2nd time it's been in the shop having paint put back onto the roof. The first time it was under warranty and they fixed at no charge. This 2nd issue, I am being charged a $100 deductable, which seems unfair. The body shop even agree's that the paint falling off is a factory issue. So why are they not 100% responsible?
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Nancy, we have this on another blog you should check out. There are over 20 or more complaints like this and I have posted a reason for the problem. I think they used an aluminum roof on this car to make it lighter and aluminum is very hard to paint if it isn't done correctly.
The metal forms a coating or oxidizes and once that happens you can't paint it. They have to remove this coating first, then immediately fuse the undercoat and then paint it. The reason for the peeling is that it just won't stick to the metal, period and no matter how they attempt to fix it, if they don't do it the right way, it will only continue to peel. Don't waste your money unless you intend to fix it and sell it to some other poor soul who will also have the problem in the future.

We are talking about getting enough of us together to form a class so we can hire a class action attorney to take Ford to court. Believe me they know they have had a paint problem and there are currently two other class action law suits in works on paint issues. One is in Texas and I forgot where the other one is.
Hopefully if we all moan a lot and post this on as many web sites as we can they will take some action to clear up this mess. Any wonder why all the American auto companies are in trouble? They don't even know how to make a car where the paint stays on the car...is that unreal?
Can you imaging how many customers that have this problem will never buy a Ford product again. How about word of mouth advertising. Now that we have the internet, all of us are getting our voices heard here as well. Can't be good for their business.
Its all about the corporations screwing the consumer, it is an American tradition now. Hopefully this mess will be a wake up call and we will find more companies that value their customers as Costco does, Barnes and Noble and others that have high consumer satisfaction ratings. They will be the ones that remain and the others, well, they won't be with us much longer.

Inappropriate?I just noticed the same defect on my white 2005 Mountaineer. The paint has peeled in the exact same spot on the roof as yours.
-
Inappropriate? You should take a photo and post it here. Also go to our other blog and copy and paste your posting there as well. If we can get everyone in one spot, should there be a class action, we will be able to reach everyone.
Do you wonder why US car makers are in trouble. Listen, the paint thing can happen, but knowing it they still make you believe yours is an isolated case before they turn their backs on you. -
Inappropriate?I just noticed the same problem with the paint on the top of my 2005 Mountaineer.
The White paint is simply releasing from the gray primer.
This is either a defected process, defective chemistry or failed product application from the paint manufacture.
In any case Ford is to be held accountable. I need to figure out how. Class action anyone?
I’m dumbfounded over Ford

It's me again. I'm still researching paint performance lawsuits.
If you're feeling alone, here is an interesting transcript from MSNBC.

Inappropriate?Hi Len,
It's Nancy again, I did not take pictures of the 2 different repairs I've already had. I do have all the paperwork from Witt, Lincoln, Mercury for the repair work they have done. If I have another issue with the paint, I will take a picture and post to the web site. Thanks, Nancy -
Inappropriate?Looks to me as if they did a faulty repair job. My shop told me the only way to paint this was to strip all the paint and the primer and get it down to the bare metal and then redo it properly. It looks like the made your paint job evan worse. I would go to them after you go to a qualified body shop and advise them of their faulty paint job and let them know they are now responsible to pay for the proper repairs and take it to your own shop.
If the roof is in fact aluminum which is my concern, it is very hard to paint properly because the aluminum will oxidize almost immediately and will not accept the paint. This is why many companies will either anodize the aluminum or powder coat it which is two different processes then painting.
I still haven't determined if the roof is aluminum or steel, but I think they used aluminum to lighten the vehicle to help meet better mileage requirements. -
Inappropriate?Just started a new group on Facebook so that all of us can join and voice our complaints. Facebook has 200 million members so we may be able to get our lawmakers support even if Ford refuses to help us.
Please join us there and upload your story and photos.

Inappropriate?I have exactly the same problem. I didn't notice it until recently. It is a 2005 satellite silver mountaineer. Who looks at the roof of the car? We have an extended warranty but were told it isn't covered in the extension. We have a 1997 Mountaineer which we bought in May of 1996. Top is perfect. No other parts of the 2005 are peeling, just the roof. It's now down to bare metal in places. Told us it would cost $800. I'll buy a can of spray and do it myself if I don't get any satisfaction from Ford which I'm sure I won't. I'll join the face book group. This is our 7th Ford, by the way, but may be the last. Obviously quality doesn't seem to be a priority, nor does customer satisfaction. I've attached at photo. At 5 feet 2 it's hard for me to get a good angle to get a decent photo.
-
Inappropriate?Diane;
Make sure to join us and upload all your photos to our Facebook Group. Hopefully if we get enough people over there we can make some impact. After all, Facebook has 20 million members, so maybe Ford will notice our Group there. Apparently they put up this web site and are afraid to even comment on this thread...Gee, I wonder why!
I’m confused why they have this web site.
-
Inappropriate?I joined the facebook group. I have also contacted Ford Customer Service. I'll let you know what I get for a response. I have never, ever had a problem with peeling paint on any other car I have ever owned and most of them have been Ford products. We keep most of our cars for 10 to 12 years (actually our first Mountaineer is 13 yrs. old) and even at that there has never been a paint problem and they have never been garaged. My oldest son has an F150. I'll check with him to see if he has any issues. This is just totally unacceptable. Thanks for your advice. I have printed out the various articles and will use the information. Not sure I'll get any satisfaction but it was comforting to know that I'm not alone, but am unfortunately one of probably thousands with this problem.
-
Inappropriate?Ford has offered to do a 60/40 split 60 for us, of course. Not sure what we'll do. It has to be fixed or it will only get worse. The paint on my son's F150 roof is cracking in the same places.

Inappropriate?Hi Diane;
I would ask them if they would also agree to do the same should this same situation occur on any other part of the vehicle and ask them for it in writing. From what I have been told and found out in my research, you can fix one area, only for it to happen again (to the same or other part of the vehicle) again and again.
I think the only hope is a law suit and to sue for not the immediate problem, but for them to take the vehicle back or for a large enough settlement that you can dump this to another poor soul at a bargain price and buy a good import.
What is the sense of repainting it, with the same paint and technique in one area only to have it happen down the road in a couple of years all over again. If I didn't have such low mileage on my SUV and had some money left after what the stock market took from me, I would simply sell the car.
I am going to write them and ask for a solution to this issue with a registered letter. If they don't reply or reply with the standard answer it is out of warranty, I will then locate their New Jersey office address and sue them in small claims court for I would think $5,000 or more.
Then I would prove in court that Ford knows of this issue and that it cannot easily be fixed, therefore lowering the resale value of the car by that amount. I think in a small claims court you have a better shot of winning. I would tell them they should pay 100% of the current repair and you want a guarantee of the same cooperation should it happen again...in writing.
Let us know how you make out.
Len
I’m sad that you have to sue Ford to make this right
-
Inappropriate?Hi
my husband just found out that the paint is peeling off the roof of our 2005 Mountainer also. He went to put the Thule box on top of the car for the first time. We have contacted the dealership - Wayne Lincoln Mercury in NJ and they don't want anything to do with it. Said it was out of warranty.
Seems like there is a lot of people with same problem as we searched the internet. My husband is going to call Ford directly. Will keep everyone posted

Inappropriate? We are having the roof painted next week. We will pay 60% of the cost. Not happy about it.
-
Inappropriate?Diane;
Are you having the work done at a shop of your choosing or are they going to handle this for you? If they are doing it, I am sure they aren't kicking in anything and simply having it done at their cost and you are paying for it.
Take the car to your shop, someone who has been in business for awhile and has a good reputation. Explain the ongoing issue with Ford and see what they say. My shop told me everything has to be taken off the roof then taken down to the bare metal, new primer goes on and then the finish coats. Cost in New Jersey is $800 to do it this way.
Now, if they don't do it correctly, the same thing will happen again, probably another 3 years from now or before. Remember, if they don't take it all down to the metal, the other areas could begin to bubble and peel anytime and not in years.
Get something in writing and at least a 3 year warranty against peeling or paint defects. If they won't do this for you, then they are only trying to buy you off now and will do nothing when it happens again.

I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?I joined the Facebook group. My Escape makes yours look like a jewel it's so bad. HUGE rust spots from where the paint has peeled off. *sigh*
I’m DISGUSTED at Ford!!!
-
Inappropriate?Actually mine has gotten much worse now and there is rust. I brought it back into the Ford Dealer this week to get him to file a formal report on the problem. Of course they turned me down, out of warranty, but now I have proof of the turn town.
My next step is to write a letter to Ford Motors and let them know of my intention on taking this to court. If I don't get a reply, at least I have proof I wrote them asking for a resolution.
I will then go to small claims court in New Jersey and see if I can sue them. I am not sure if they have to be in the state, because they operate their business in our state, so that might be enough.
I will report both here and at our group and let you all know how I make out.
Len
