Allow venues to be flagged as/combined with duplicates
It'd be great to be able to flag a duplicate venue, or even combine two venues into one with a few users' joint okay.

right now, admins/supersuperusers can merge venues.
laural: i merged the two you were talking about
and totally agreed that we need a "flag as duplicate". i've been wanting to add that into the iphone client as well as the website. on the list!

One of the reasons that I think there are so many duplicates added, is due to the iPhone interface. In the Places tab, at the bottom of the list, is a "Not in list?" option that allows you to enter a new place. I think that option should only be allowed after first doing a search (the magnifying lens in the upper left corner). Why not have the search functionality at the bottom of the Places list and then place the "Not in list?" option at the bottom of the search results?

Inappropriate? These locations also need to be merged:

Inappropriate? When merging two places, how do I know which one will become the default? I want the venue with the most data to be the real deal. I've used my superuser status to merge venues in the past, and I've noticed that sometimes the lesser entry remains. So now I've taken to editing the two duplicates to look exactly the same. Please help me avoid this wasted step. It gets extra complicated in my brain when I'm merging three together. Thanks.

Inappropriate?I've been going under the assumption that merging A into B will result in the venue keeping B's info, but if someone has a definitive answer, please give it. But if you're a Superuser Level 1, you're flagging them to be merged, so I guess someone higher is reviewing it before it's actually done.

Inappropriate?Justin, your assumption was my assumption, but when I checked back on the completed edit, the lesser A info was kept over the B info. Now I'm distrustful of the merge process. Clarification would be ideal. And, yes, someone else is still approving merged venues.
I’m confident

Greg and Justin, in short: it doesn't matter which order you merge them. Whichever user will complete the merge should be looking at both records, and choosing the better of the two records to keep - which will roll checkins, tips, and to-dos from the "to be removed" venue into the "to be completed" venue. It is also up to the user performing the merge to adjust any address/phone information as s/he sees fit. -
Inappropriate?Jay, I get what you're saying, but my point was more toward things like correct address, cross street, phone, zip, and even state info (some peole spell out the entire state for some reason). It seems a shame to lose all that correct info in an awesome B record if the A record address info inadvertently overwrites the B, which has happened to me.
Ultimately, I'm taking time to improve the system. All that extra info increases the likelihood that my venue will show up when I refresh places rather than having to do a Search to bring it up. This in turn decreases the likelihood that someone will feel compelled to add a venue that already exists.
I’m happy

Understood, and agreed. If the person completing the merge doesn't take the time to recreate lost address and phone data, then the system has suffered a loss. Ideally, the Superuser that has executed the merge is paying the attention to the resulting record that you seem to be. -
Inappropriate?Hi there. I am the product manager for two establishments in Beijing, and I have the combined problem that there is a duplicate of one of my restaurants (my fault), and the other issue is that I would love the ability to adjust the address / map location because neither place shows the correct geographical location, which makes it difficult for people to find them both on the "places nearby" tab when you "check-in" on the iPhone app. Is there any way that a user can be assigned as the owner/proprietor of an establishment, or if the address can be edited to suit our actual physical location?
Thank you very much for your time/consideration!
