you do not get it for your actual birthday, it is supposed to be for shouting happy birthday.

I know I've made 5+ Happy Birthday shout outs to people. Do they have to be specifically for friends on foursquare?? I haven't yet been granted the 16 candles badge :(.

I got mine just a couple weeks ago. 5 different check-ins over the course of two months in which I did a shout-out of "Happy birthday _____!" connected to the check-in I was making at the time; fifth time unlocked the badge.

You don't need to say "Happy Birthday," you imbeciles. Anything with "birthday" works. If you wanted, you can make five checkins shouting just "birthday."

  (That does remind of something I'd been thinking: Shout-based badges are a little unfair to people who don't speak English. Hope Foursquare keeps that in mind when/if they start supporting other languages.)
