Check-in to venue with multiple locations (same name), associated to wrong location
I checked in on my iPhone to a restaurant that has multiple locations. The GPS didn't find the restaurant near me so I manually entered the name of the restaurant. However, it associated my check-in with the other location, not the one that I was at.

Wow, another huge thread... always surprised to see these huge chains of feedback so thank you all for helping and moderating and participating.
Okay, so this is a huge problem. Chains, duplicates, etc... and we're on it.
HarryH (our superstar engineer) has a masterplan for moving away from unique venue names to better support chains and other venues with multiple locations. We're making some big code changes to website now and I think we're going to start on the big venue changed in the next two weeks.
Bear with us, we're getting there. :)
(also hoping that the Android and Blackberry versions will take some of the "I chose the wrong venue!" stress off our mobile users)

Inappropriate?Yes, I've had this problem several times too, and it seems that there's no way to confirm the correct location, manually enter an address or edit a venue. So now I'm mayor of this particular venue, but it's not the right venue location.
Icanhaz venue-editing capabilities or confirmation of correct venue location plz? kthxbai
-
Inappropriate?Yep. A nice bakery cafe here in DC just opened up a 2nd location that I was trying to add. I was checked in to their original location.
-
Inappropriate?I've had this happen as well. After realizing I just checked in at someplace clear across town, I've gone back and added the new venue with a new name (putting the location/city in parenthesis like "Tommy Doyle's (Newton)"). When I get home that night, I go to my history and delete the check in at the wrong venue...and add tags to the new venue. It's a pain.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? This is definitely a major usability problem and I hope it gets corrected soon. Right now Atlanta users are appending the location to the name of the restraunt, such as "Chipotle - Midtown" or "Chipotle - Buckhead". It would be really great if this sort of "neighborhood" metadata were built in to the venue itself.
-
Not only did I just have the exact same problem, but it happened to me at a Chipotle too. Sweet, delicious Chipotle... Mmmmm... -
Inappropriate? After using foursquare for a week this is my number one complaint. I understand that a lot is still in development but checking in is the center of the service and it is very hard to do with the current location matching.
For example, when you search Shorty's the website brings you to the Shorty's 32 page even though there is also a place called Shorty's listed. -
Inappropriate? This is definitely a big problem. Combined with the multiple entries for the same place the data is going to be all off. Also needs to be editable after checking in.
-
Inappropriate? When I enter "Home" as my location, it says "Checked in from Home" but it's someone else's home address...
r u guys kidding me? How did you not catch this? Locations should be by address not name. In other words, if I enter "home", i should then have to enter my address since its the first time i've entered "home" but if the address i enter matches another address for a "home" location - then sync them - otherwise they are different.
Gosh, this seems like something that you should have figured out 1st.
Can you say fail?
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?TJ,
r u kidding me?
You really don't understand foursquare if that's your complaint.
You don't use 4sq when you're home. It's for when you're out and about at bars/restaurants/clubs/concerts/parks. And to see where your friends are.
Most people dont' know the address of the bar they're in, just the name.
I’m offended by ignorant indignance
-
why can't it be 4 that? im home, im checking in... right? foursqaure says to "check in" when i arrive somewhere... well, i arrived at home. -
-
You deleted a comment that said you visited the help page. The very first question - what is foursquare - says this:
//Think: 50% friend-finder, 30% social cityguide, 20% nightlife game. We wanted to build something that not only helps you keep up with your friends, but exposes you to new things in and challenges you to explore cities in different ways. There's a lot of experimenting here, so bear with us as we try to figure it all out (and thanks!)//
Being at home does not help you explore the city, find new venues, meet up with friends. It's not just about arriving places. Do you check in at work?
My tone, btw, was a response to your tone. "How did you not catch this? ... Can you say fail?" -
touche!
i understand what i read in the help. here's where i am focusing: "not only helps you keep up with your friends, but exposes you to new things in and challenges you to explore cities" in order to "keep up w friends" i would like to see when u check in at home and work. albeit not very important, it adds value to the overall data that is being collected - it adds completeness.
foursquare should provide some filters to allow us access to the data we want to see... the badges, mayor, etc is great and i hope they continue to innovate their product.
and u are correct. i was a bit sarcastic in my first note. thanx 4 calling me on it :) -
Actually- friends and I have also been discussing among one another, that we'd like to have "home" or "roaming" (placements that are general and not tied to a single address) added as a options for check-in.
They both reference a non-location-specific placement, which then says to friends either 'I'm done for the night' or 'I'm looking for new things to do.' It seems to me that FourSquare is about surveilling behaviors of friends, as tied to locations- so having 2 or 3 basic/global states of location that a user can identify themselves with, seems to drive the interactivity of the surveillance part of it, that much more. More integrated, more complete, more meaningful.
I realize that FourSquare made the above statement as their mission, but it's not like Twitter or other successful & similar products, are anything like what they were intended to be upon initial deployment. -
Ok, I submitted my above articulated rant as a bonafide idea- "like it" if you so choose: http://getsatisfaction.com/foursquare... -
Actually, this raise the overall issue of people adding their workplace as a venue. While I'm actually doing the same (and therefore became the mayor of my work place), I'm not convinced that it overall adds any value to the product. Why should I care if X just checked in at Blip.TV or Y checked in at Gawker Media. I'll probably won't crash there anyway and it doesn't help me discover new stuffs. Any idea there? I will probably make that a full question to gather opinions. -
Florent - see my idea about adding "venue type" metadata here and vote for/comment on it if you think it's useful: http://getsatisfaction.com/foursquare...
Personally I think Foursquare should contain as many "places" as possible and as long as they are accurately classified, there should be no stigma attached to checking in wherever you are as long as you are willing to share that information. -
Great point Zach. That could solve it pretty easily -
Inappropriate?I like Zach's idea for now. I'm surprised it is still a bug a month out, considering how many chain restaurants there are out there!
-
Inappropriate?I just had this problem yesterday. I checked in at "Salsa's" in hingham, ma and it put me at "Salsa's" in Dorchester.
Based on my location it's clear I wasn't in Dorchester, it's a good 10-15 miles away from where I was! No wonder cheating is being looked into, the app picked a location that wasn't even close, but just happened to have the same name. It's easy to cheat if I don't even have to be there, or even close to there.
I’m sad and frustrated
-
Inappropriate? This is one that seems like it should be really high priority. Portland has the same problem Zach mentioned -- the data is a mess, with users coming up with their own ways to identify their venue's location. Foursquare needs to do two things right away -- display the address it's about to check you in at, and allow you to choose to enter a new venue of the same name at a different location.
I’m tired of checking into the wrong place.
-
Inappropriate? This problem makes me want to uninstall the iPhone app and never use foursquare again. Please fix this asap -- it makes foursquare almost unusable.
I’m frustrated.
-
Inappropriate?I checked in at "home" and I am in the Detroit network yet the location is set in a city about 5 hours away.
-
Inappropriate? At least some kind of intermediate solution where I can go back to the web site and reassign a venue if I've encountered the bug or clone it to create a new one at the location where I went to would be nice. You wouldn't have the GPS coordinates though and would have to trust me on the address I specify.
Since this is a popular request and highlighted thread on here, it would really be nice to get some kind of official comment from the FourSquare developers on this.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? This actually has been commented on officially many times. Check out this thread (with the official word of 'Dens' raining down):

Inappropriate?ps: Joost (and others) about correcting bad checkins. This is also part of the plan, though the fix-old-checkins feature will be one of the last things added (after we roll out the new venue naming scheme).
Just wanted to let you know all these items are on our immediate knock-list. And as superusers, it's frustrating for us too :) -
Did this get resolved yet? It seems to have stagnated for a month, but I'm still having this problem all the time (mostly because a lot of London isn't mapped in yet) -
Inappropriate?Try now - I think this was fixed this week.

Inappropriate?yes, I noticed that it now prompts you to specify which location, then gives you a list from which to choose. Excellent, thanks!
-
Inappropriate?Ok, I'll look out for it. Last time I found this bug it was probably about 2 weeks ago now - but I was wanting to add a venue that was the same name as another, but in a different location. It just assumed I wanted the one in the wrong end of town. Will try it again soon and hopefully that'll work now too. Thanks. :)
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate?I had this same problem today as well checking in @ Starbucks. The venue wasn't in the database, so I went to Google maps to get the address, then came back to check in and add the new venue and my checkin got associated with a Starbucks at another part of town. This happened with Sonic Drive-In as well - or any duplicate name for multiple locations. If it can't find the venue near you, it should prompt to be added and not check in at a venue 15 miles away. If a venue is found that you haven't checked into before or it isn't selected from the nearby list, it would be nice to verify the location or if duplicate names are found, such as Starbucks, prompt the user to select the location.
I’m hopeful
