Correct a venue name after checkin?
I checked in at "Luka's Taproom and Lounge" but didn't get the points for it because it's in the system with an "&" instead of an "and." It would be cool to be able to go in and amend the checkin to be the recognized venue (AND GET THE POINTS!) Can I?

Whoa, just saw this thread (thx @Adora). A few things:
#1. I know we've been saying this forever, but the ability to "fix" a checkin is very high up on our list. We're still two guys struggling to keep our heads above water, but with any luck that'll change soon and this is one of the major changes we need to make. (sorry, but I don't think we're going to retroactive award badges for botched checkins tho... it's more fun to get them when you're out anyway, right :)
#2. Dup venues and merges. I have an admin tool that let's Team Foursquare merge these (and I merged like 500 today - yikes). Soon we'll release Superuser Level 2 which will allow some users to merge venues without our intervention
#3. Why not let all users be superusers? Cause all hell would break loose :) We limit it to our best / most trusted users and it seems to work pretty well (so thanks to all of you)
#4. "Gaming the system". Whenever you reward points / score for something, you'll have people who will try to game it (I once had a friend tie his Nike+ sensor to a ceiling fan to try to rack up miles!). Fake checkins are a problem now and will be more of a problem when the points translate into something meaningful and mayorships starting being worth free coffees etc. The quick fix for this to do compare our phones' GPS with where you say you are, and while we have this turned off for now, we'll prob turn this on when the Android / Blackberry apps are up and running (yes, they're both in the works :) Stay tuned for this.
I think that's it. Thank you all for sticking with us as we're going thru this crazy growth spurt (and trying to keep our cool like Bobby Brady in that episode where his voice starts cracking cause he's all growns up... anyone anyone?) Anyway, thanks again and with any luck we'll be knocking down these issues soon.

Inappropriate?I have the same problem. I can associate my checkins with new venues fairly well, but it's when I get to this page that everything grinds to a halt:
http://skitch.com/timoni/bk63j/foursq...
At first I assumed that clicking on a location title would associate it with my checkin, but now I know it just goes to that location's page. So how CAN I associate my checkin with one of those places? The system took me to this place as part of the "Add Venue" userflow, so clearly there's a way to do it, but I can't see it.
I’m frustrated
-
Yeah, instead of associating a check-in to a new venue we need a way to associate to an existing. -
Inappropriate? For some reason I can't get credit for "seller's markets" when what's in the database is "Sellers Markets"
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I checked into "Sundance Kabuki" and it didn't register as a venu even though there is "Sundance Kabuki" and "Sundance Kabuki Cinemas" in the database for SF. I'd like a way to associate the check-in with a venue in a sort of "Yeah, that's what I meant" kind of way, but I'm not finding it.
I’m sad panda
-
Inappropriate?Same issue. I checked into a couple of places in SF that are in the database but weren't registering because I never changed my location from NY. Need a quick & easy way to correct for venues that aren't associated properly with whatever is in the database.
I’m vaguely annoyed
-
Inappropriate?I have this same problem. I went to Maharaja on Capitol Hill in Seattle, and there are two entries for the one venue. But apparently I didn't enter it correctly for either one so I'm not getting a point for it.
I’m hoping a fix is soon.

Inappropriate?same here! i have 3 venues that did not come up for the past three nights. all are in the system.
I’m bummed, dude.
-
Inappropriate?Perhaps what is needed is a city-editor human to correct/consolidate multiple variations of venues. And/or a wiki-style method for users to do the work themselves.
I’m willing to help.
-
This ability does exist - I am one of the Superusers who can help with this. We can consolidate duplicate venues, and edit location info. But it doesn't make much sense to correct the problem in this threat - correcting impropper check-ins for every user. Who has that kind of time? -
Matt, do you have any insight into why the Foursquare team is limiting that ability to superusers and not making it available to everybody? -
Matt, if users had the ability to fix their 'check in's and venues on their own it wouldn't matter "who has the time" cause the users would be correcting their data themselves.
It's that or at least giving Super User status to someone who cares about fixing these things for other users. -
There are a TON of duplicate venues, and I spend a lot of time just trying to clean up my own. I think it'd be worthwhile to address the mistaken checkin problem by extending some of these rights. Even with what I've been enabled, I cannot simply change a checkin by merging it with an existing venue through the "Add Venue" option, as described in this thread.
I'm not totally sure what their thought is, but I think they're preferring some moderation system that scales. Otherwise there would be about a million ways to game the system. -
A million ways to game the system? Why, there's already one simple and effective way: Just check in places where you aren't! That four lane highway of potential game is wide open. Why are we worrying about the mousehole of letting people (honestly) correct their checkins? Instead of trying to rid the system of fraud, I think a better solution would be to allow trusted users to band together, so that you can see your stats among users you trust. The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more check ins will slip through your fingers ... -
Inappropriate?Agree with gahlord -- we need a way for users to submit duplicates or submit merge suggestions, and maybe have a moderator approve these merges.
I’m willing to help.
-
Inappropriate?same happened to me. Missed an apostraphe and didn't get checked in. Would have earned the crunked badge that night if I could fix my mistake.
I’m sad and whiney

Thanks for the reply Dennis. I do need to offer a small apology: Until just now, I was under the mistaken impression that FourSquare was part of Google (this Times article set me straight: http://tinyurl.com/aw6ayn )
Keep up the great work, and don't let those annoying I-pay-nothing-but-want-everything users (aka me) get you down! ;-) -
Glad to hear the fix dup check-in is high on the list. That's one of my biggest peeves right now and i heart foursquare a lot! I am willing to put in the time to correct it myself, but there needs to be the option.
Also...it was Peter Brady. ;) -
Where do I apply for 'best/most trusted' status? I've been fortunate to work in this role with lots of new software and services. Would be nice to have some kind of reputation/karma score for the historic feedback and pro-bono QA I've done on GetSatisfaction (and via Twitter, etc) for other products, so you could know I'd be a trusted data curator. ;-) -
I'm with silverton. I don't want to have to wait till I have 100 (or however many are required for superuser lvl whatever) in order to start fixing mistakes in the database or correcting check ins. It would be nice if we could apply for said mod type positions. Partly I think that'd be more effective anyhow. I don't go out as often as some of the most active users, but I'm probably more inclined to fix things than many of said happening folk. -
Inappropriate?I checked in to Kiku Sushi, but the location choices available were not the ones I was at. Looking on the website later, it looks like it placed me in Manhattan (http://playfoursquare.com/venue/45767) rather than Brooklyn (no existing venue at 453 7th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215. Uh.... ;)
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I am on the main site on my computer and this is not an option. Let me make sure we all get the question...An example, I enter "Bloodhound" when I check in on my phone. I go back later and see that the system doesn't have that as a place, so I try and add it. Turns out it's there as "bloodhound bar" instead, but there is no option for me to change and select that one (on my phone OR on the main site) even though it's the same thing. If I try and reenter it as a place with my name, it tells me that place already exists but I can't change what I entered.
I’m frustrated
-
In the iPhone app on the Places screen, there is a Search function on the top left corner that allows you to search for places by keywords instead of only searching via trying to check-in. This has come in handy a few times when I wasn't sure of the venue name that's in the system. -
Inappropriate? Can you try entering it with a different address?
I’m trying to help - new to this myself
-
Inappropriate? If I do this with the typo'd venue that I'm trying to correct, I get:
"Looks like we already have this place in our database. If it's new, click the back button and rename it to something more descriptive."
It's not a new venue, and it doesn't seem productive for me to name it "Venue (corrected)" or whatever and just keep junking up the database.
I’m happy for the suggestion -- only wish it worked

Inappropriate? Can't FourSquare answer this? I'm a newby. I think there are still a lot of flaws.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I thought we were posting our questions here FOR Foursquare to answer?
Looks like Dennis is an "official rep" and his post above answers this and says they are working on it, so we're just waiting patiently. :)
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?Remember, as @dens said, "We're still two guys struggling to keep our heads above water, but with any luck that'll change soon" ...
I'm just another interested product tester like most everyone else here, so maybe if we try to think about how AMAZING Foursquare is already, as the result of just Two Guys churnin' and burnin' the code, we can cast 'em just a little more slack?
Maybe the good news is that quite a few of us really like the idea, so we're only anxious (excited) to put it to more and better use. ;-) When it comes to new products and capabilities, it can't be said enough: Thanks for the incredible work, Team Foursquare!
I’m impressed, looking forward to what the future holds
-
Inappropriate?yes total props. I totally dig foresquare, I didn't think this was a place to rant on how bad it sucks, just ways to make it better. I am just a regular old user who would be super happy with this tweak but I am sure that entails a lot of work on their part.
Keep pluggin' away...We heart foursquare.
I’m happy but could be happ-ier
-
Inappropriate?hey all - thanks for holding down the fort while I'm running around :)
what's the big venue problem - editing? right now, you can edit a venue if (a) you've added it or (b) if you're a superuser. (and we promote superusers every month or so)
as for the "duplicate key" stuff - ugh, i hate that bug. Team Foursquare is actually 3 people now (welcome to @harryh!) and he's working (right now actually) on re-writing the code we hacked together before SXSW in March. he knows what he's doing (unlike me :) and we have this awesome master plan for how the venues will work much better w/ chain restaurants and duplicate names, etc. that fix is prob 4 weeks away (sorry!)
dup venues + merge venues - i have an admin tool for this but just have zero time to spend on it. i try to do it once a week so if there's something in the "merge" queue i'll get to it, just not sure when (i'll spend some time this weeked on it for sure tho - it's prob 500 venues)
anyway, thanks again for using foursquare! we love you guys :)

Nice, excited for whats to come. If you need help with anything just let us know... -
Thank you Denis for giving a rough time line of when this will be implemented. One of my biggest peeves with foursquare has been that things seem like they've been in a state of being worked on, with not much mention of progress for several months. Looking forward to the upgrades that are coming.
And I will keep suggesting, If you don't have time to mod the venues yourself, you really should designate a user or few who would be trusted and capable of picking up the slack. You have more important development stuff to do anyhow :) -
Inappropriate?I use a simple method that resolves the naming issue for venues. Search the mobile page http://m.playfoursquare.com/search for the venue and checkin from there...
-
I do this as well. If I can't find the venue after a few attempted searches I'll add it. -
I do this as well, but my friend has to check in with SMS and this is not an option for him. -
Inappropriate?Yeah, this sucks. We'll be fixing these two big issues (the crappy venue matching AND edit past checkins) in the next few weeks. (HarryH working feverishly on code re-write)
-
Inappropriate?Something did change recently. I have several checkins for "Children's Discovery Museum" which did not match the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose venue. Previously when I would try to add them as a venue, it would ask if I was adding a duplicate. I would say yes... but it stil did not update my checkins to point to the existing venue.
This time when I tried to add my checkins as a new venue, it did not ask if it was a duplicate. So now there are two venues for the Children's Discovery Museum at the same address, mine and the earlier (correct) one. Oops. Now what? Eventually, an admin will notice the duplication? -

Inappropriate?I typed in Whole Foods, was expecting to get a list of various Whole foods to choose from or add to. Instead I got checked in to Sacramento Whole Foods automatically (I am in SF). Would like to be given options so I can confirm AND have a way to fix my entry afterwards in case there is a mistake. Thanks!
-
A super user in your area would need to rename that venue to "Whole Foods - Area" to stop that from happening in your area. We had a similar incident in Atlanta where someone just named a location "Caribou Coffee" w/o more info. -
This is the biggest problem I've come across, and its not isolated to "chains". I checked into a restaurant the other day in Burbank with a pretty unique name, and without even asking it checked me into a restaurant with the same name in Newhall, which isn't even close to the same area. Seems like with the GPS functionality of this app/site, it should know better then to check me into a place that isn't even within 30 miles of where I am physically. A "confirmation" pop-up when you check in AND the ability to correct after the fact would be the 2 biggest additions, IMO. -
Inappropriate?Yeah, chains are a big problem for us. We're working in this now and should be fixed relatively soon. Sorry for the drama!
-
Inappropriate?Another chain problem while you're at it: This Ricky's is supposed to be 590 Broadway http://foursquare.com/venue/225391 and I was in SoHo but it checked me in for the 27th Street location http://foursquare.com/venue/75848
-
on iPhone or mobile_website? Getting very close to fixing this FOREVER -
Inappropriate?Yeah, we've pushed some code already that half fixes this and the rest of the fixes will be coming soon. (starting with some changes you'll see to mobile_web this week... with any luck, this problem should be GONE from mobile_website by Fri... w/ iPhone fix following soon after)
-d -
Inappropriate?I have the same situation. I tried to checkin BART stations, but said not found. Come to the website and see that all BART stations are long added.
Patiently waiting for "that's what I really meant" feature to sync up unscored checkins.
Thanks guys.
I’m doh!
