Is there a Symbian app coming up?
Is there a Symbian app coming up? Don't think I'll use it before I can add an app to my N96, Mobile web browsing just doesn't really work for me.

Inappropriate?Hear hear! I'm a Nokia gal. Have you gathered any stats on Nokia usage in Europe vs. the US? As an American living abroad, Nokia seems to be much more prevalant in Europe. Might help you gain adoption...
That being said, m.foursquare.com is cool. Works for me. But I'd like to really be using the geo-whatever stuff.
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?Waiting for this. While mobile web is ok, it's a pain to type where you are...location aware native app please!!!
-
I'm still trying to get my E71 browser to let me check into a location - so yea, I'm with you - LBA please! -
Inappropriate?I'd also like an N97 app. Using the mobile web page is ok, but nowhere near as snazzy as a native app would be!
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?@eartle (on Twitter) author of the Mobbler application (http://blog.symbian.org/2010/01/18/mo...) says he is working on a Foursquare native app for Symbian. Here's hoping we can get something soon...
-
actually making an Symbian Application is pretty easier if you know about Mobile Programming. Why is it taking that long time???? -
Inappropriate?Hope @eartle is making progress. Can't wait. Don't make me buy an iTouch or iPad!
I’m silly
-
Inappropriate? The project is hosted on Google Code here: http://code.google.com/p/foursquares/...
There was steady progress through to mid-December. Hopefully something will come out soon.
I'm just glad he's working on it because it seems no one else is.
I’m hopeful.

Inappropriate?I have a Nokia E71 and N97 (and an N900). I want Foursquare on these devices like a fat man craves candy.
I can help test such an app too....a Widget for N97 might be a good solution as well. -
There's an app for the N900 called "BarrioSquare" that works great for foursquare ! Check it out over at the Google Group : http://groups.google.com/group/barrio... -
Inappropriate?I'd love an app. for my Nokia N95. Would complete the Foursquare experience *looking jealously at his colleage with iPhone*
-
Inappropriate?I'd Love an App for my Nokia N97. Girl friend flicked my BB Storm and I hate being on the Mobile Website.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?we hear that Nokia is working on an app so you can use foursquare natively on your devices, starting with the N900. Sweet!
http://thenokiablog.com/2010/01/02/ba...
I’m excited
-
Well, this isn't being done by Nokia, rather an independent developer, Chris Burris on the N900, utilizing the foursquare API.
And yes, we can utilize Waze, but there is still a huge need for a native Symbian app. Considering Symbian has around 40% worldwide marketshare, I'm surprised Foursquare isn't actively working on one already. my hope is that development is underway :) -
Also, the N900 uses maemo, not symbian. Though being written in python/qt it may be able to be ported. -
I'm amazed from foursquare's behaviour. How can you guys ignore the most popular mobile platform. From your attitude I feel no will to provide us app for S60, just like you don't care. -
Hi! There's a third-party app that will support foursquare check ins: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/i...
We wish we had enough developer resources to build native apps for ALL platforms! You can still use foursquare on our mobile site: m.foursquare.com -
Chrysanthe, you obviously have more than enough dev resources, since you had time to develop an android app while at the same time ignoring the most widely spread mobile platform worldwide. This is not a matter of resources, simply a matter of you following the buzz and developing only for platforms that are "popular" in the US while ignoring the rest of the world.

Laurent, we don't actually have a Symbian developer on our team (if you know of anyone who wants to build a foursquare app, let us know!). We develop the iPhone, Blackberry, and now Droid apps internally but the rest of the apps that are available are built open source by third party developers which is pretty cool. We allow everyone to use foursquare via either SMS or mobile web, but of course we hope that everyone in the world will be able to use the app on their device eventually! -
Inappropriate? You can use Waze to check in with foursquare. m.waze.com
Its not an elegant or easy to use solution, but it works.
I’m silly
-
Waze is too buggy to consider worth using. I heard about Waze getting 4sq capability on Symbian Guru - gave it a good go and it was just too buggy for primetime. Best to stick with the 4sq mobile website at the moment until a native Symbian app is released, or until someone produces an Ovi Maps service integration with 4sq. -
Inappropriate?I would love to see FourSquare integration in Ovi Maps!

now that's a neat idea BruceA -
Good Idea. But will it happen? it even does n't work like Google Latitude yet. -
Nokia is too slow to heed your advice! It must be easy to implement since Nokia released Maps APIs! Maybe Foursquare should just make a call to Nokia and get it done? -
Inappropriate? How long are you going to ignore millions of users of Symbian S60? foursquare fail
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? Not much progress on the Symbian client by the looks of things.
Last revision was December 14: http://code.google.com/p/foursquares/...
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?I actually asked @eartle about it on Twitter. This is his response. Looks like we gotta wait longer for it =(
http://twitter.com/eartle/statuses/86...
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? The reason 4sq has left Symbian out is because they're US centric where iPhone, BB and Palm rule! I'd suggest Nokia buy 4sq and intergrate it into Ovi. Would be a great buy!
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?@janole has started adding support to his great app Gravity. It's not free but well worth the money.

.
-
There is a free trial though: http://mobileways.de/products/gravity... -

Inappropriate?I hope we will have application for Nokia E72
-
Using Gravity on my e72 right now its a great app with twitter, facebook google reader and now testing 4square, works great for me. -
Inappropriate?I need this for my N97!!!!! I can't live with the /mobile Version anymore... *sigh*
I’m frustrated
-
Mike: try gravity - http://mobileways.de/products/gravity...
There's a free trial and it's a bargin considering you great great twitter, facebook, google reader and now fsq support.
It looks especially good on the 5th edition phones like your n97. -
Inappropriate?James, this is really exciting! I have Gravity, which is one of the best apps I've purchased for my N97. A very easy to use and beautiful-looking interface.
I have downloaded v1.30 (6325) but can't find foursquare anywhere.
Can you tell us how we find it (and google reader?)?
Thanks.
Ken
I’m undecided
-
You need to add a new account -
try to add a new account. -
You have the latest official stable release. to get google reader etc go to info -> update to the latest formal alpha. For foursquare you need this http://bit.ly/6325FP2 -
Inappropriate?I also want and app for my E71, at least a java version I don't need a native app
I’m thoughtful
-
Get gravity Juan - http://mobileways.de/products/gravity... -
Get gravity Juan - http://mobileways.de/products/gravity... -
Inappropriate?I would really like foursquare for my E71, be it java or native (prefer native). Can I (or should i say we) sign up someplace as BETA testers? I'd be happy to test.
I’m frustrated by the webversion of foursquare, it's getting to the point where I don't want to check in no more...
-
Gravity works on the E71, check out the free trial http://mobileways.de/products/gravity... -
James, I installed the latest version (beta) but on my e71 I don't have the opption to add a fourSquare account. -
Same here on my E63. Have Gravity 1.30 Build 6300. Quid? -
6300 is the latest official release build, got to info and updates to install the latest official alpha. HOWEVER, the latest un-official which only works for S60v5 and S60v3 FP2 (ie not the E71 sadly) is here which has foursquare http://bit.ly/6325FP2 -
and by 'unofficial' I mean it's still from @janole, but he hasn't put it on info and announcements as it's FP2 only so doesn't work on all supported devices. -
I've downloaded Gravity and I really don't like it... I'm guessing a little programming will be needed to get my foursquare client -
Inappropriate? With all respect, I don't plan to pay for a third party application like gravity if foursquare is able to support all other mobile OS with an app.
I’m frustrated
-
It's the same thing as Twitter clients...some of the apps are free, and some are not, it depends on what functionality you want. But I hear you! You can try using our mobile website for now, but we do think the experience is better in an app. -
Inappropriate?Well, There is 4SQ available in the new Alpha release but it's kinda bug riddled.
I installed it yesterday on my N97 and found it very unusable. Will have to wait for them to come up with a stable release.
Currently using Gravity 1.3 (6300) which is pretty cool but no 4sq. 1.3(6325) has 4SQ.
I’m anxious.

-
Ow and, all is well and peachy, but Gravity, unlike the apps from FourSquare for the iPhone/Blackberry/Android/Palm isn't free, so it's no real reason to be happy yet ... It's time FourSquare came with it's own FREE symbian version (that also works on the 3rd generation, like my E71) ... thank you very much -
Why don't you guys at 4sq just contact Nokia Ovi Maps department and make an integration with Ovi Maps? It could be done very quickly. -
Inappropriate?you should add symbian native application for 4square ASAP. Here in Asia we tend to use symbian phone rather than iphone, android or BB, We will never have courage to buy those phone. Too damn expensive. Think of large 4square user base in Asia. Think of millions of venue will created everyday. It will be a huge advantages for 4square and it will be millions of symbian phone users added. Dont left us behind :(
-
Inappropriate? For all Nokia users! - installation links below!
Gravity for Symbian phones like the E71, E72, N97, 5800, N95, etc. is THE BEST application on Nokia for:
- Twitter (incl geo-tagged tweets)
- Google Reader
- Foursquare
And is an interesting contestant in becoming the best app for Facebook.
Now, you may have a principle of not paying for apps that are free on other platforms, but the value that you'd get from Gravity far exceeds the price you pay. In addition, Foursquare so US-centric where Nokia is not a major platform. It's a shame for the makers of Foursquare, but in the mean time you have the opportunity of checking out Gravity, which is almost guaranteed to improve your entire social network experience on your Nokia phones!
You can follow me on twitter on @thusgaard for regular updates on recent versions of Gravity (although I'm not an employee of or affiliated with Mobileways.de), and you can make use of the two links below for the currently most recent versions of Gravity for your test:
New versions of Gravity for S60 are out.
All except v3FP2: http://bit.ly/6350ALL
v3FP2: http://bit.ly/6350FP2
I’m pretty confident you'll like this!

Sorry if I'm missing something but I just downloaded the demo from OVI and it only supports Twitter and StatusNet, which I'd never heard of. Have I missed something obvious? -
Upgrade the software to get the most recent version:
* In the overview of accounts, go to Info & Updates
* Select "click to Install on the most recent version - should be 1.30.6355 -

Sorry if I'm being thick, but there are just two links there: "DEMO" and "How to register Gravity". There's nothing about updating. My version is 1.22.630 just downloaded from the OVI store. -
Aha! I downloaded the app from the website and managed to get the latest. Is there something wrong/incomplete with the OVi version? Thanks. -
Inappropriate?Maybe the guys at Foursquare could check out Buddycloud for some inspiration... http://buddycloud.com
It's native Symbian and supports geolocation without GPS using cell towers. I'm not a programmer, but the APIs for both apps are fairly similar. Foursquare support in Buddycloud would be awesome... -
Inappropriate?I am hoping an s60 version is released sooner rather than later...on my 5800, the mobile site has a problem where it shuts down internet after pressing check-in past the shoutout bit, which is a tad frustrating to say the least.
I am frusttratyed with so many pieces of software not getting an s60 release when the sets it powers are still quite popular...aren't they?
I’m frustrated and annoyed
-
There is an s60 open source app! You can check in via Gravity for Symbian: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/i... -
Thing is, I don't want to use Gravity on my mobile, I'd rather just have a Foursquare app. -
sorry, it's not an open source app but a third-party app. we develop apps in-house for a bunch of platforms, and some outside developers have built apps native to other clients to support check ins. Rad! -
Inappropriate?seriously...wtf, haven't you read any of the Gravity related posts? Gravity is an app you have to pay for! Serioulsy FourSquare could you stop trying to hide behind the lame excuse that is Gravity the holy grale so you don't have to develop a native FREE app like for the other platforms! that is just insane, and I've had it, F you and your "service" ... never-the-F mind this geo-tagging sh*t ... ow and don't bother replying with "but you can always use the web version" F that too, the on-line version is like trying to take a 10Mpixel photograph with a stone tablet... FOURSQUARE, YOU FAIL!
I’m SO in Berzerker mode right now!
-
If you can't afford to spend $10 for gravity, there's a free application called Brightkite to tag your location with.
If you want a free foursquare app so bad, why don't you learn some coding and make it yourself? The API is available for anyone to use.
You should also try learning to spell before handing out fails. -

LOL. This thread is becoming more fun by the minute. -
Inappropriate?Ow and Al, remember to click just once on a "post reply" button... it's not a windows icon you have to double click.. now that we're heading down the "cheap shots" lane.
It's not that gravity costs $10, Gravity is a great app... that fact that FourSquare hides behind it's existence, using as an excuse not to have to develop their own app is lame, what justifies making free apps for the other platforms and not Symbian, that altough not having a large footprint in the US, there are other continents outside the US like Europe en Asia were Symbian DOES. And also hiding behind the claim "we don't have the resources" ..right... since the other apps are finished, redirect those resources on a Symbian app. development.
And Brightkite, what? are you even serious? what would I want with BrightKite, if I want to use a service like FourSquare... the whole points system and badges is for a large part the point of using FourSquare...
I’m annoyed
-
At the end of the day it's Foursquare's choice if the want to conquer the part of the World where Nokia phones dominate. If their choice is to leave it alone, then it's in their right to make that choice.
And if you do not like to pay for Gravity then go ahead and download Google Maps and enjoy using Buzz instead. It's not like 4sq is a monopoly. -
Inappropriate?Yeah, a Symbian app would be cool, but they're a small-ish concern based in the U.S., with a U.S.-centric business model. It's completely their choice for what platform to develop for.
I don't get all the outrage. It's not like Four Square is a public utility paid for by your tax money and they're somehow obligated to develop an app for Symbian users. Learn to live without it, use it via Gravity or buy an iPhone/Blackberry/iPod Touch or Android phone.
I'm rocking a Nokia E71, and can't use Gravity, but I can use Four Square via Joikuspot and an iPod Touch (and soon, my on-order iPad). -
Inappropriate?Simple - for the Nokia use gravity http://L0N.eu/getgravity - uses the foursquare API and also allows you to use twitter and facebook from the same app. It makes things really easy to use Foursquare
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Admittedly, Gravity does do the job and in my opinion is well worth the £6 I paid for the full version.... HOWEVER!!
I have seen the iPhone version and the functionality that it comes with, for example seeing all the badges that you've accrued.... There's just soooo much more to the application than Gravity allows.... So whilst Gravity is a suitable alternative.... I would like to think that sometime in the near future 4SQ will actually develop an application for Symbian phone users.... Maybe a member of staff could confirm whether this is going to happen or not,
Kind Regards,
Rick0684 - A Happy Gravity User!!
I’m hoping that something will be done! PLZ
-
That would be great! Do you know any symbian developers? ;) -
Inappropriate? The latet version of Gravityshows badges as well - Jan Ole updates the app woth feedback like this nearly every week.
Symbian apps are not simple to develop so I doubt Foursquare themselves will develop a Symbian app.
Go happy - get gravity! -
With @janole adding new 4sq features to Gravity pretty much every week the incentive for 4sq to create an app of their own diminishes.
After all, they probably just want traffic to their site and don't care if the app is their own or someone else's. -
Inappropriate?Oooo, I wonder if you clarify the version, im using it on my Sony Ericsson Satio, and if it is available on this version where would I find it?? Thanks again,
Regards,
Ricky
