Let users add cities (hear me out!)
Let users add cities!
The content is user-created, and there are users everywhere that want to join in. There's internet access everywhere, things to do everywhere, people with Blackberrys and iPhones everywhere, and Twitter/Facebook/etc users everywhere.
This is a cool concept that's completely useless to me because the closest city that's available is two hours away. It'd grow exponentially if it wasn't limited to the cities the staff adds. So long as there are users wanting to add content, what's the hurt in LETTING THEM DO IT? I feel that there are lots of users who had interest when they heard about foursquare, signed up for an account, then realized they weren't included, forgot about it and won't ever bother coming back.
Ideally, one would be able to find other users/things to do/venues/etc. based on geographical proximity, not just from within the confines of one's 'city'. I'd carpool with friends to check out something I'm interested in that's technically outside the limits of my city, y'know?
I'd love to be able to use this site, but I'd be surprised if my city (Portland, ME) is even added at all.

Inappropriate?I think crowd sourcing should be used to allow users to add cities. I posted about how the Amsterdam venue database is polluted with venues from other cities because those cities are not supported. Why not just let (super)users add a new city and move the venue to that city?
I’m not overly bothered

Inappropriate?I came up with a list of 300 Portland, Maine venues for them to use (before Vancouver's crowdsourcing was declared a success). I still have the file if the guys are interested.
I realize Portland, Maine's probably WAAAAY down on the list compared to cities like London, Cleveland, Fort Myers, and Springfield...but hey, the data's here and ready! -
Just go ahead and add the venues. :) -
Inappropriate?I'm glad to see that Foursquare is already working on Sam's suggestion. Since I live about an hour outside of NYC and use a Blackberry, looks like I'll have to put this whole Foursquare thing on hold for awhile.

Inappropriate? If FourSquare is going to limit the available cities - at least indicate *why* on the sign-up page, to save people from hunting for the text field to add their city - or, heck, just let them type it in, and if FS isn't available in that city yet, add them to the State/Province level.
I’m mildly annoyed.

Inappropriate? What I found out (from another user) is that you can add locations no matter where you are. I chose Boston as my location, but I live in NH. Boston is close enough and most of my friends are in the greater Boston area, but... What I do is I add new venues all the time in New Hampshire. I figure eventually they will have to add the state since there will be so many venues listed.
Also, once you create a venue, it is there for you to check into again. -
Inappropriate?Crowsourcing is a good way to grow the database but as other mention it can also poison it as well very quickly off the bat. Perhaps if we roll it out slowly, perhaps to Superusers Level 2 and up or something, and see how that works out? If it goes well, then let Level 1 SuperUsers have at it too. Dpending on how well it goes, a decision can be made from that point if its a good idea to let normal users add venues to new cities.
