Need better documentation for SMS check-in.
Apparently the exclamation point is used as the delimiter between the venue name and extra message when checking in by SMS.
This is not explained in the documentation. In the only example SMS checkin given, "@ Ace Bar ! Playing skeeball", the exclamation point could be conversational. It is also unclear whether the @ is required.
As a result, my first two checkins were mangled, and I can't correct them. That issue is even more frustrating. (Dennis says on http://getsatisfaction.com/foursquare... that this will be fixed "soon". That was five months ago.)
I'm not having a good first impression with FourSquare. :-(

Inappropriate?I am really unclear on the language I should use in Foursquare mobile. "(like this: @ Ace Bar ! Playing skeeball)" doesn't help me.
I have been using brightkite mobile with similar operators, but Foursquare doesn't provide any confirmation of my check-in venue.
When I add anything on the www. site, I have to provide SO much information, and venues are never located by name keyword. How could I possibly check in with just the name and no location?
How is my activity worded from what I submit? Showing the result of the SMS you give as an example would help. Not having much luck, (and Get Satisfaction is a pain.)

Inappropriate?Checking in via text can be a little tricky compared to the fancy smartphone apps.
Here's how a text check-in breaks down I think. We'll use their example again below.
@ Ace Bar ! Playing skeeball
The @ symbol designates the start of the venue name you are trying to check into. The ! designates the beginning of your "shout", which is basically a little free form message you might want to include with your check-in. The "shout" part of the text message is not required to check-in. Sending just @ Ace Bar will still check you in.
When you check-in, foursquare should text you back letting you know they have you at XYZ location. It will indicate if you have been rewarded any points too.
Checking in with just a name works well for single locations, but gets kind of messy for chain locations especially. Many chain locations use the name and location right in the title to help with this issue. For example: McDonald's - Downtown.
Hope this helps a little and makes your foursquare experience better!

Inappropriate?I am still confused about what result this message gives to other people.
I assume that I could send "@Ace Bar 531 E 5th St, New York, NY" and check in at the same place as a friend at "@ Ace Bar" but I still don't get how it posts your activity. Foursquare could provide an example with a result
'@ Ace Bar ! playing skeeball --> Emily is playing skeeball at Ace Bar 531 E 5th St, New York, NY' so we could type what we want accordingly.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!! Why doesn't Get Satisfaction ever let me log in?

Inappropriate? It depends on what method your friend is using foursquare, but he/she should be able to see where you have checked in easily through the web or smartphone apps. Seeing check-ins through SMS seems a little more difficult to me so far. You should be able to get a friend's checkin directly texted to your phone, but I have not gotten this working yet. Also if you checkin to a location that a friend is already at, it will let you know that when it texts your checkin confirmation back.
I'm not sure what you mean by, "type what we want accordingly."
