No points being awarded for check-ins
I'm only getting points inconsistently. I'll get 1 pt for my first check-in, then nothing for subsequent check-ins for the day. I even added two new venues and got 0 pts for both. I was doing so well this week...now no points are being added (excepting the whopping 1 pt for my first check-in). What's up? What can I do to help fix it? I'm using an iPhone and I've tried updating/shutting down/etc.

Hi all, we're working on fixing this. And FYI, points reset each week so it's not like things are lost forever. Foursquare is about much more than points! Please note that with these new controls, you'll have to actually check in where you are at the time and not check into a bunch of places in the same minute or the system will stop giving you points and badges. Play fair and please hold tight while we fix things. Thanks!
-
I had the same problem yesterday -- with the Android app, not the iPhone, so it has to be a greater issue on 4sq's back-end servers: 8 check-ins at 7 unique venues, and 3 or 4 of them awarded no points. One of the no-points check-ins was my first check-in of the day and all of the others had a minimum of 16 minutes in between, so I'm sure it couldn't be related to any type of frequency-based (ie, no more than 3 check-ins in 15 minutes) anti-cheat coding they may have rolled out.

saw the same thing on Android today. iPhone seems to be doing points for me.

I have an android that does this too. Sometimes a refresh will do the trick, sometimes it takes 2 refreshes.
-
-
It's also going to very from phone to phone based on the quality of the GPS hardware inside and regardless of the OS. My wife and I both have Android phones running the 1.6 OS. My MyTouch 3G rarely needs to even be refreshed, picking up an accurate location right off the bat most of the time, whereas my wife's G1 -- while she's standing right next to me -- usually needs to refresh at least twice before she gets a good location.

My husband and I (android app) and our friend (iphone) have gotten sporadic points today as well.
-

We've rolled out some controls to prevent false check ins. If we think you're not actually near the venue where you are checking in (we take device inaccuracy into account as well), you won't get points. Also, if you check in more often than we think is proper use, you won't get points either. We're still awarding points for typical use, though.

It would also be helpful to know what the definition of improper use is - out here in the sticks I often have little or no cell signal and catch up on the places I visited while I was out when I return to a usable signal, but because the programming sees this as rapid-fire checkins I suddenly stop receiving points (which I care little about anymore.) What is truly irritating is that this also affects my mayorships, I didn't get one because as of my last checkin I didn't get points OR the mayorship that I deserve... it sucks that the cheaters are ruining this game for those of us who play fair & only want credit where it is due.

How much scope is given for device inaccuracy given that not all handsets are GPS capable (eg my Blackberry 8220) and as such, it's not uncommon for the device to think I am several kilometres away from where I actually am?
Cheers,
Sparkesy-
I have an iPod Touch, which means that not only do I not have "GPS", but must rely on a open wifi access point to figure my position. Sometimes a wifi access point isn't available and I have to find one on my way home. My house is near my local town(1/2 mile), so sometimes I wait until I am home to check in, as I kow I have wifi.

Same here. My phone always seems to guess I'm somewhere I'm not. I checked in at work this morning, from my desk and evidently according to their inaccuracy rules I wasn't where I said I was. Same yesterday while walking my dog at the park.

UPDATE: thanks for all the reports, guys. It seems that some of the new changes are not working perfectly. We're fixing it as fast as we can!
-
It's really really REALLY inconsistent. I checked in one place where it said I was 1035 meters away and got points. Another venue I was only 673 meters away and got no points. PLUS when I'm sitting INSIDE my office where I created my workplace venue it sometimes thinks I'm in a city many many miles away, not to mention even when it *thinks* it knows I'm in the correct city it still thinks I'm over 500 meters away. I'm ready to give up on this -- bug check your updates before you roll it out people!

I'll have to say I have had a lot of problems today... only 4 checkins with points all day long... We have a group that has really enjoyed the nationwide rollout, but they are starting to try some of the other location based networks, The changes are really poorly done and tested
-
-
I posted some information on this in another thread about not getting badges:
http://getsatisfaction.com/foursquare...
But it could definitely be related to not getting points (on the Blackberry app). -
-
Having some serious, serious problems with this (on the Droid app). If the problem is due to anti-cheating measures, so be it, but if that's the case fix the location determinants. I've got a GPS-enabled phone and my last two checkins have been listed at 872 meters and 4505 meters from my location despite my standing right at the address for each.
-
-
I have tons of problems with the locations not matching up. I live on the East side of the river but frequently, when I check settings, etc from my home, it shows me on the West side of the river. I was in the parking lot of a location yesterday, looking up at their sign, and was told I was 2600+ meters away. (This sort of thing happens often.)
I don't have a problem with anti-cheating measures, but this kind of stinks. I was at every place I checked in to yesterday and today and no points. If I don't get any points or badges, what's the point of playing?
I'm not trying to be negative or bitchy - I love foursquare - but if it's not going to work, it's not worth the time. :( -
-
I agree Denyse. I was outside of a venue, added the venue, checked in and didn't receive any points. My husband, standing right next to me, checked in and got points.
It's definitely not working properly and I hope it's fixed soon.
It's no fun being at a venue and not getting points. It's like being accused of cheating when you know you're not. -
-
Snap.. I added a venue yesterday, and it said I was down the road from where I was, I asked for the zip/postal code and found the cross road, yet still the map placed me in a totally different place. Yet again, no points. I have 1 point for this week so far, I'm not exactly thrilled here.
-
-
Just encoutered this while out today - didn't get points for checking into my supermarket (showing as 110 meters away, when I was stood outside - I guess the person who first added it perhaps added it from one of the other entrances - there are several), then added a venue in the same retail park and didn't get any points for checking in, despite not moving from where I added it.
Got points for checking into our library, which was slightly less than 60 metres when I checked in.
Whilst I welcome the cheating controls, it would seem they're too fine for the location data currently held in the game, and hope that some kind of compromise can be made.
I'm not fussed about points - my friends aren't very active in the game, and I'm one of the few active users in my area, but it's going to put people off very quickly if it continues - it's the first sour taste I've had of foursquare in my three months using it.
EDITED TO ADD
From my desktop, I used the mobile site to do a test checkin to the library in the next town (over 5km away) - I got points for that. So it seems illogical to not award points based on not being an arbitary distance from a venue using GPS when I can use the browser on my phone to check into distances that are really far away?- view 3 more comments

In the situation you're describing as you get further away from the city, I'm guessing that your phone's location was being triangulated by its cell tower reception rather than a precise, actual GPS lock. Even if your phone does have an actual GPS receiver, it can take a few seconds to a few minutes to lock and the Foursquare app would go by cell-signal triangulation in the meantime -- which, while never as accurate as true GPS lock, will usually be even less precise outside of urban areas. It relies on distance to, and strength of signal from, cell towers in the area -- and the more the better, and you'll have more towers in the city. As you move out of the urban area and have fewer towers around off of which to bounce the cell signal, triangulated results will get worse.
-
-
wow, I thought the threshold was 100m. today I was 108m from a venue and got no points, but it worked when i got to around 75m (I was standing right on top of it, but it was located incorrectly on the map)
-
-
-
-
+1 to this. I added a venue, and had 2 first-checkins yesterday, all while I was right there. The add was even based on the GPS location the Android app gave me, so the anti-cheating measures seem to be way too aggressive.
-
-
So glad to hear I'm not the only person having points issues and it's hopefully something Foursquare is working on (sounds like it).
I check in using many different methods since I don't have an app for my phone: I use ipod (if I have wifi), text, mobile web, or going to mobile site on my computer. All of which have gotten inconsistent results with points. Maybe they think I'm a cheater, but I'm not lying about where I'm going!-
I have this same problem!!!!!! It's not fun and totally starting to ruin my experience. :(

If you roll something out too soon and it's glitchy, why not roll back to the old version and work test extensively, work out the kinks, and then push the update out again? Is catching a few cheaters more important than annoying the masses? ( Delete or Edit)

I'm still having this issue. I was "58 meters away" from Starbucks and awarded no points. Seriously?

And... still having issues. Really disappointed by foursquare's response on this.

Seriously getting mad about this! I love playing 4sq but this is gonna cause loss of users, it's already been a few days. instead of working on a "fix", bring it back to the way it used to be, then do the change over when it is ready and bug free.

I totally, absolutely, completely agree. Particularly after all the press they got at SXSW you'd think they'd want to make sure their so-called improvements work before they roll them out.

Same issues going on here. Standing at a venue and not getting points, including when I create a venue.

Oh, and I assume that because I'm having this problem with points it's also what's preventing me from getting my rightful mayorships. Really not happy about this!

Hi Sarah, points actually have nothing to do with mayorships. If there's something wonky going on with those, please send me a link to your user URL and I'll investigate for you! ct@foursquare.com

I don't buy this...I mean I have literally been inside the venue AND it has been hours since my last check in...so why is this happening?

As Chyrsanthe acknowledged above, it's a bug. Yes, I wish it would get fixed already, too, since I've had it happen to me as well but at least they've acknowledged that there is a problem and have said they're working on it.
-
-
it would not be as frustrating if many of us had not brought up this problem before, and as someone mentioned earlier...if it isn't working stop using it until they have a system that works. I'm all for keeping people honest but why continue to punish people because their new system has a bug?

I do play by the rules and I plan to continue to do so. It is just frustrating when you are getting accused of breaking the rules when you are not.
-
I don't think anyone's accusing you of anything - I'm so sorry if it seemed that way at all! It's just hard (speaking as a community manager for Get Satisfaction) to have everyone do an internet pile-on. I know that the team at Foursquare is working on this, so hang in there. :)
-
-
I don't mean to pile-on -- I certainly know how frustrating it can be to get code to do what you want it to do -- but I *do* feel like we're being accused of cheating. An "Official Rep" has said the problem is related to controls to prevent checking in places where you are not (a.k.a. "cheating"), and as someone who values honesty and integrity as highly as I do, the suggestion that I'm breaking rules is, quite frankly, insulting. I know I'm over reacting and that they're working on it; it's just frustrating to have a service you use regularly (and that, until now, hasn't given me any problems) not work properly. Here's hoping it get's fixed soon!

I should have gained mayorship of two venues in the past two days but was not given them. The first is a huge and massive garden/picnic/park at this venue: http://foursquare.com/venue/848339. I checked in twice in two different days (more than anyone else). Should this not have given me the mayorship? I did not receive points for checking in although I was there.
The second is a mall at this venue: http://foursquare.com/venue/164233 where it apparently did not give me points towards a mayorship. The pinpoint of this venue is actually not where the venue is and when I checked in it claimed I was about 3,000 feet from the mall, when I was right in the middle of it.
This is becoming very frustrating. -
-
I don't know if any of this is helpful, but this is what I noticed in the past couple of days:
On the Android App, If the venue where I was checking in appeared in "places|nearby" I got points if it was within 100 meters. I didn't get points if the venue was over 400, and I didn't check-in anywhere between the two, so I'm assuming the "nearness" threshold is somewhere in between.
Also on Android, when a venue didn't appear in the "nearby" list and I had to search for it, I got no points for it, even if it was less-than 100 meters away.
It seems that the system is working for me, as long as I wait for a detailed GPS fix before I check-in.Until now I've just used search to find the location where I was because it can take sometimes several minutes to get a GPS fix on my phone (I usually keep it off to save my week battery), and I could check-in in a matter of seconds with search.
Also, I could often check-in through the mobile site, but it was unreliable. Some times it would think I was at some venue with a very different name than what I entered, and once even thought I was in Miami, FL (I'm not, I am very-much in California).
I'm not suggesting that any of this is intentional, a feature that works differently in the real-world than on paper, a bug, operator error or some combination of the above, it's just what I seem to have noticed in case it helps.-
I've had points up to 150 metres, but not tried anything other than that, and always with a GPS fix (on Android). Fortunately my phone is pretty quick at finding a GPS signal.
I have noticed that the list of venues on the mobile (and main site) is changing for me - I live in one town, which is practically joined to another town. In my home town, I can't see many of the venues in the neighbouring town, which is less than 4 miles away, yet I can see lots of venues much further away. Switch to the neighbouring town, and I can see venues there, but not in my home town, but then venues really far away. Strange. -
-
Tes, I've definitely noticed a correlation between points being awarded, and the presence of the venue in my 'favorite places' or 'nearby' lists. Searching for venues has really been hit or miss in terms of point accumulation — today, for example, it seemed to have no issues, but the rest of the weekend has been another story entire.
Adding fuel to the fire, is the factthat the cell phone tower closest to my work is under repairs/in the midst of being replaced, so my daytime checkins tend to not get counted.
I think the mobile site has been the most consistent with regards to point acquisition, but it has been spotty of late. Attempting a checkin just refreshes the where are you screen, and doesn't offer a list of similarily-named venues as it once did in the very recent past. -
-
-
-
-
I'm still having this issue. I created a venue FROM the venue, then checked in WHILE I was sitting there. I got no points for the check-in, and no points for adding the venue. Poor.
-
-
This issue has definitely grown worse over the past week or so. Scaling issue maybe? As long as I'm getting credit for my visits, I'm indifferent to the points though.
- view 1 more comment
-
-
The bad thing is that you're NOT getting credit towards badges and mayorship. I learned that the hard way today.
-
-
Hm, I just noticed that I don't get the credit for visiting places. I've been on at least one 10+ check-in day and it's not reflected in my badges. Bummer. If businesses are starting to base some special mayorship bonuses based on FourSquare, then I hope this issue is fixed soon. I can understand why some people are so worked up over this issue.
-
-
-
-
I agree, also having problems, using BB, have checked in places over the last few days, added loads of new places, checked in to some places over 2 different days and says it is my first checkin, despite it showing in my history, this is really annoying, i don't see the point of four sq right now.
If peolpe are so bored they want to "cheat", I really don't care, it makes no difference to me how many points anyone has, but is sucks that my checkins are not registering correctly, what's the point of checking in. I thought the idea was so people could find when their friends were around, why can't I checkin to a town?!
POINTS ARE WORTHLESS, WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL. -
-
As a SU2, I'm getting a lot of merge requests for buses which is fine, but it's flagged up issues with GPS, an as a user with checking in.
Since a bus can cover a lot of ground and am assuming we just want one entry for "bus 73", where do i drop the GPS location pin? And how can I avoid being punished for checking in at the opposite end of the route to where the pin resides?
On a week where some users in London, uk at top of chart are clearly drive-by checking in (one was clearly logging in at shops next to each other, working their way down the road, without actually going in them - I know, I happened to be in one of them and had this person;s notifications popping up!) it's so frustrating being "punished by the system for valid checkins.
I could take the time to sit down and figure out how to game the system like the above do, but then I prefer to play fair. However as mayorships start to gain in financial benefit with brands offering discount etc, GPS issues don't help. -
-
Having the same problem described by many above with the Android app on my Droid.
I was at a mall yesterday and checked in to a store and got points. and then after leaving a checking in to another store I wasn't awarded points. Same for the next few venues I visited.
This has been going on for me since this past Wednesday. Foursquare was down for me for a about an hour (I couldn't check in) and then once it was working again I checked in to all the places I couldn't before. Even though I checked in multiple times in five minutes all the venues were within half a mile of one another. Despite this, I still got the cheating warning pop up which I obviously wasn't doing.
Starting to worry this is a larger issue since I see that many other ppl have the same problem-
The issue with your problem is the "rapid-fire" check-ins the point of foursquare is to find your friends and meet up, and if you are checking in at multiple places in 5 minutes then you aren't giving anyone a chance to meet up with or find you. And it would not be obvious that you weren't cheating because somebody else could have been sitting around somewhere and checked in to all of the same venues. You should only be able to check into the mall itself, individual stores is pointless unless the establishment has rewards for mayorship. You'll be fine, they are working on fixing it and checking into a bunch of places within five minutes seems like cheating.
-
-
yokidd20, some of us don''t have wireless access, and rely on wifi hotspots, like I do with my iPod. So I will sometimes visit the post office, then shoot over for a slice of pizza. Since the nearest open wifi is at the pizza place, I sign in for both there at around the same time, because as soon as I leave the pizza place, no more access. I also don't have GPS on my iPod, and instead rely on a company that drives around and tags the Mac addresses of routers to a GPS location and uses that info to roughly determine where I am.

I understand that foursquare is "working on these issues." But until you get them officially worked out, you should reset the application to how it was. It is ridiculous that when I HONESTLY check-in somewhere, I don't get points for it. And points really aren't that big of a deal to me, but I honestly think it is effecting my badges earned and/or mayorships. It is not MY fault that the venue has the complete wrong address so when I'm really there checking in, according to foursquare I'm actually 2,200 meters away. If I could edit it, I would.
Today I earned my 10th mayorship and didn't get my Super Mayor badge. I consulted this forum and realized that some people ended up getting the badge after checking in to a place they were already mayor of AFTER their 10th mayorship, and that was what triggered it. I went to do that today, checked into a place I was already the mayor of--but since according the application I was a million meters away, I didn't get the badge that should have been triggered and I didn't get any points.
If people want to cheat, LET THEM. If they want to check into some place in New York one minute and some place in China two minutes later, WHO CARES? If they get satisfaction out of doing it, then WHATEVER. If there is a user that is being obnoxious and preventing other people from getting rightful mayorships, ect., then we should be able to report that particular user. It is wrong to punish us who ARE playing by the rules and checking into places when we're really there, but it doesn't "appear" that way because of the wrong address or pin-drop location.
This is making me BEYOND angry.- view 2 more comments

I totally agree...if someone is 'cheating' then what are they really gaining? I mean I could drive down the street and stop every block and check in to places there even though I never got out of my car and it would still be cheating from the standpoint of Foursquare as a game. I don't check into a place unless I actually GO there...and I'd guess that is the same for the vast majority of users, but in trying to police the few Foursquare is discouraging the many from using their service.

More issues tonight
What I was starting to think was a GPS issue I think may be solely a foursquare problem. I was standing outside a Subway and it said 17 meters away, I checked in and I got no points other than the you're checked in message.
I know GPS can be a problem at times (my Droid's GPS is wacky at best) but Foursquare needs to fix this crap immediately. I understand there might be some cheating out there. But when YOUR product is broken and won't allow us to check in for points when we are actually at the venue and then when we can check in we don't get points what are we supposed to do?-
I can confirm that proximity to the location doesn't appear to affect this bug. I've been in locations where the pin is 10 meters or less and did not receive the points for check-in.
-
-
-
-
-
Chrysanthe (from the 'Company') replied, as can be seen above, without any reasonable explanation as to what the real issue is, what is causing it, and how it is being fixed. Did I miss something?
To her, points should not be important to us. Points are afterall part of the equation besides badges and mayorships. It's fun (usually) for the rest of us, so if Foursquare doesn't want to lose anymore users, they need to come up with plausible explanations and fixes real quick.
Aren't we users one of the key reasons why FourSquare is even here?
Sorry, just frustrated with making several attempts to check-in while inside the places listed and getting nothing at all, other than a check-in. Why make the effort at all? -
-
The latest update for the Android app is what killed the GPS and the whole checking in with points
-
-
3 of my friends have now stopped checking in daily, and its really not fun anymore...
Thanks for the lack of a solution. Truthfully, even with all the crap that was going on before at least it was fun. Now I have no idea what checkin's will count or not.
One time 30 meters gets rejected, 2 hours later 2500 m gets points, The next day 1500 is rejected and 200 m gets points...
Maybe the Foursquare staff believe that randomized points are a good solution. I don't.-
Totally agree Todd. I think a standard must be made and Foursquare needs to do some updating/ improvements to GPS location because many times I'll stand outside (not inside) a venue to wait to check in and can't get points. What's the purpose if I have to search for every single venue?
-
-
-
-
-
I love how the company rep is basically telling us we are all cheating. From what I can tell, all my friends with iPhones have no problems, it's just the people with Android. I didn't have a problem till the latest update. I never cheat and won't even retroactively check in if I forget to. I can be standing at the venue and foursquare will say I am hundreds of meters away. I know it isn't my GPS because if I check Google Maps it locates me to within 2 meters. The radius for checkins needs to be at least 500 meters to account for GPS accuracy and exact creation of the location, ie: parking lot, front entrance, inside location.
-
Last update for Android app killed Foursquare. patrickem is completely right though. I think the fact we are on here on the feedback forum shows that we care about this app and I would be willing to bet lots of money no one here does any cheating
-
-
I'm on an iPhone and am having all the same issues as everyone else.
-
-
-
-
-
I am not happy with this, i'm not getting points when i legitimately check in to places on a regular basis because foursquare must think i'm 'cheating'

Just wanted to add my gripes about this issue...I never had any problems until I got the Barista badge from Starbucks. LOL. Since then, I've been having check in issues at valid places, not doing any fast check-ins or anything. From what I found out from a friend, they said we can use the mobile site and still get points...I've been testing that and it's worked everytime so far, so at least it's a work around. :(

I checked in from mobile site and SMS this morning and got credit for neither one.

I clearly see this is "being fixed" since 5 days ago. However, I have had the problem for the last several days during this "looking into it" period and have missed out on points for check ins, adding new venues and it seems badges. I have started taking screen shots from my Blackberry to determine when I get points and when I do not. It is inconsistent with time of day, method of check in, GPS inacurracy, frequency between check ins, version of Blackberry OS, service provider of mobile service etc. Having spent the last week on travel its disappointing that points have not been available. Granted, yes, Foursquare is about more than points, however, it is a promoted part of the application. Now that you have businesses investing in being part of the service/app and users taking time to use it and make it functional for all then it should not matter WHY people "play", it should be imperative the app performs as promoted and consider major bloggers and media outlets write about it.
Foursquare wouldn't have the 300,000+ check ins in a month and growing if PEOPLE didn't find use for the application as provided when we accept the agreement, share our information and use it. Since points reset every week, I would hope the code knows to give everyone their points, badges and other fun items when this is "fixed." -
-
I'm using the Android app on my Nexus One and I started having this issue last week. I receive points for some venues and not for others. Curious.
-
-
I don't get points for most anything anymore. I even checked into a venue in a city I had never been to, checked in, got no points, and then my fiance checked in and got awarded points for it. If there is some punishment system in place it needs to be removed. It's one thing to not award points at certain venues like homes, it's another to not award points because I might check in too often.
-
-
6 days and no fix? I now officially have less points than checkins this week (14 checkins, 10 points -- or averaging less than 1 point per checkin).
Any idea when this will be fixed? Is cheating so rampant and important that honest users need to be punished? -
-
So now when anyone legitimately checks into a venue that wasn't accurately pinpointed when it was created, they are denied points to it? What about venues that are really big like parks and bridges?
-
-
-
It's not just points, but badges and mayorships that aren't being awarded. Quite frustrating.
-
So true. I have 16 logged checkins (19 actual) for one venue and and the 'mayor' has 13.
-
-
-
-
-
Definitely a problem with badges, mayorships and such and not just points - but I'm sure they are related. I have 38 checkins in the last week. No idea how many are "valid". But no badges or mayorships have happened during that time, so I'm thinking it's not many.

The problems continue. I posted my experience today in this thread -
http://getsatisfaction.com/foursquare...
Chrysanthe, when you say "Play fair" and the app pops up a little window that says "Play fair" and doesn't acknowledge my checkins, you are saying I'm cheating. After reading my story, could you explain why you, as a company representative, feel my use is not 'typical' and why you feel I am a cheater? -
-
Just tried the new updates. If anything, it's even WORSE now. I used to be able to check in if foursquare "determined" that I was about 200 meters away; now I have to be under 100 meters away to get points and not be called a liar/cheater. This is absolutely ridiculous!
I hope this company realizes that you're going to just drive away all the loyal users who really do play fair. -

Agreed - I went to check in at my grocery store this evening, it told me I was 245m away when I was standing in the heart of it. I got the new message about not getting points for the visit, and was bummed. While I agree that one should only check in on-premises, perhaps the radius needs to be larger, considering the size of many of the venues.
-
And perhaps more importantly, considering the inaccuracy when triangulating by cell phone towers instead of true GPS.
-
-
-
-
-
Something also should be done for those of us located in small towns. The nearest cell tower is quite a ways away so Foursquare always thinks I'm in a different city than I really am.
-
-
wow I checked in while standing INSIDE the bike shop down the street and it said i was too far away to receive credit. an hour later I added a new venue while standing at its front door and i was "too far away?" and again... no credit
-
-
I have to say that it actually worked pretty well for me. I checked into five places tonight. Four worked great. The fifth didn't, but it's pin was way off. If you find that this is the case, you can submit it and have it moved. Naturally, this isn't the best course of action, but if you find the data is inaccurate, helping correct it is probably about the best thing we can hope for at this point.
From my experience, I've found that much of the data is probably user entered (perhaps my own), where the venue has only a street name (no address), perhaps not even that - and if the pin is way off, then it's not going to be anywhere near where you expect...- view 1 more comment
-
-
I've been encountering similar data - but seven is easily the worst I've heard of thus far. I think I have one that is up to about five through various misspellings, errant addresses and such, but seven is just insane!
The pins are certainly the key, and those huge parking lots are a big deal, so I've also been watching for them as I process requests, and as I find problems, I've been fixing them, but it's a long and arduous road ahead - getting the community to add good data, rather than just throwing something in there is certainly a component of it... -
-
Foursquare began as an opportunity to check in and tell people where you are. The FS people have shifted their emphasis on to finding cheaters and are nullifying the primary purpose and annoying the good users. If the 'good users' leave, all that you have left are the cheaters.
A major point of the game is to tell people where you are, gain points/mayorships, and (oh, by the way) promoting/advertising certain venues with your 'tips' and comments/shouts.
I don't have a smartphone and use SMS or the ipod touch or the mobile site for checkins. Sometimes the nearest access point to where I am going is accross the parking lot, so I check in there and procede to the establishment. The FS team needs to balance their Type I and Type II errors ASAP before they drive away loyal users.
I started out with the android and turned it back in because I was dissatisfied with the phone. Now, I would like to continue with FS, but it is becoming quite difficult at times. -

Im using a BB Tour app with the GPS on. On Tuesday, I checked into this venue: http://foursquare.com/venue/80071 while physically in the store. The app said I was too far away to be awarded any points or badges. WTF?!?
Seriously, Foursquare needs to fix this ASAP. It takes all the fun out of it and makes me not want to use Foursquare anymore.-
Even if you have the GPS turned on, it still needs to activate and lock on to a satellite signal once you launch a location-aware app such as Foursquare. The time this takes will vary from phone to phone; my wife and I own different models of Android phones, both running OS v1.6 -- mine usually gets a precise lock within 30 seconds, whereas hers often takes 1-2 minutes. Until/unless you get a good satellite lock, your phone's going to use cell tower triangulation, which is often off by a good degree. (The Android OS even differentiates between whether you have "precise" location, meaning GPS, or "coarse" location, meaning triangulation). I admit, I don't own the Tour myself, but here's something I found in a Tour review: "I did notice that at times the GPS took a long time to get a lock, and sometimes had to rely only on tower triangulation." (taken from http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp...) It's not necessarily impossible to get solid GPS lock indoors but it is more difficult, and can take more time... and Foursquare can't make phone hardware work better/faster.
Also, I loaded up the venue you linked and zoomed in the pin-point location -- its pin-point is in the street, at the entrance to the parking lot driveway. It's not surprising to see it there, as that's where Google Maps would place the street address given for the venue, and Foursquare has to base their initial mapping on something so they base it on Google Maps. That's probably their best option overall, but it's not going to be perfect every time, either. Even if you had precise GPS lock when inside the store and your phone knew exactly where you were standing, you'd still have been some measurable distance away from where the pin is located, and thus where Foursquare thought the "venue" should be. A request could be posted so a superuser can move the pin to a better spot -- putting it by the building's front door would probably be best, I imagine -- but we'll need to be told exactly where it should go, first.
Yes, Foursquare needs to update their systems further to improve the situation; they've admitted as much and have said they're working on it. Part of that, I'm sure, entails taking into account such things as I've described above. However, those things I've described illustrate how many variables can come into play in all this which are beyond Foursquare's control. They are still a small handful of people (I believe a single-digit number, unless that's changed recently) who are providing a free service to a global base of users -- users who are, essentially, mapping the world into Foursquare's servers, and doing so from every type of mobile network imaginable... personally, I'm willing to cut the 4sq some slack while they work out the kinks.
(Side note to Rei: please don't take this post as coming down on you, personally; the things I've written are meant for the general populace at large, but your post just happened to provide specific examples for me to use.) -

Yeah... Seven is pretty bad. What drives me crazy is that somehow people have been able to add duplicate venues all over the place, yet when I try to add a legitimate one (from my Android phone using the app), Foursquare says it might be a duplicate and won't let me add it. When the "duplicate venue" is miles away (two Game Stops in this case). Frustrating.
-
-
At the risk of piling on, this is enough of a turn off to get me to switch to Gowalla. There's something about being told "You're too far from a location to get points" (Starbucks), when you're standing in front of the Barista. It also fails to grasp that some landmarks cover a wide area (parks, neighbourhoods, etc.), so trying to impose an arbitrary distance from an imaginary location doesn't work.
This was fun, but in the past 2 weeks has turned frustrating.-
Have you tried Gowalla, because this not being close enough to check in even though you're literally right in front, or seated within the venue is even more frustrating on Gowalla — the checkin button turns a lighter shade of orange and you just can't check in. It happens to me at my fave breakfast joint all the time because Gowalla thinks the venue is two blocks over from where it actually is.
I don't know a single super user on Gowalla so good luck getting your venues edited unless you've added then yourself.
I agree that foursquare could stand to implement a venue size modifier that would affect the checkin radius, but they are just arbitrary points that end up getting reset on a weekly basis. -
-
-
-
-
I have to agree. It's really annoying. I know I've missed a lot of bonus 1st time visit points due to bad pin points or bad gps. I was actually closer to Target (175 m) when I was at the stoplight then I was at the actual venue (309m)
It begs the question, how far is a little too far away? It's not like I have the time to run around the parking lot refreshing my application to get something under a certain amount of meters. And when you don't know what that amount is, you never know if you'll get points or not.
It seems that instead of perimeter controls to vex cheating, there should just be a user reporting system instead. -
-
You know, as much as I am frustrated with the recent changes, I still think foursquare is a quality idea and quality product. It had been brought to my attention, because myself and some of my co-workers are very avid users of foursquare and are almost disgustingly passionate about it and discuss it often, that maybe the stricter boundaries on check-ins, in the long run, are a good thing. It may just be that the data points, addresses, pin locations are just so inaccurate because of lazy users, that the locations of all of these venues are just so far off, that when you check-in legitimately, according to the data on the foursquare database, you are not close enough. I am going through all 18 of the Mayor-ships I hold, and any location I have created and making sure that the data is accurate according to the foursquare style guide. Hopefully, eventually, there will be some Superusers made in this area, (because there seemingly are none) to fix all of the locations around me that I can not edit at this point.
For now, I suppose this is all we can do to help as users.
I'm going to try and keep sticking with foursquare and helping to do whatever I can to make it better for us all to use.
I hope the bugs are fixed soon as well though :)-
Well said. In the meantime, when you have venues that need correcting of which you're not the mayor and can't do it yourself, please use the "official" edits/corrections requests thread here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/foursquare...
There's a whole host of passionate superusers who monitor that thread for such requests and are happy to help out with making the fixes so that the Foursquare venue data can be as accurate as possible!
If you find venues with duplicate entries, you can request to have the duplicates merged in this thread:
http://getsatisfaction.com/foursquare...
Just post the venue URL in question (http://foursquare.com/venue/XXXXX) -- or all relevant URLs in the case of merge requests -- to the relevant thread, along with the info to be corrected, or a note as to which "good" entry should be kept in a merge, and superusers will clean it up. We can even do pin re-positioning as well; if there's no easy way to describe where the pin should go, you can use Google Maps' "My Maps" feature to create a custom map URL where you put a pin on the exact spot it should go in Foursquare; include the URL to that custom map and the superuser can see where to put it... then you can even delete your custom map in Google once a superuser has replied that it's been done. -

Lately I have been doing check-ins but not getting any points. I'm standing right next to the venue but it say I'm about 1500 meters from it.
I suspect it's due to a GPS problem, I am using a Blackberry and have the latest version of the app.

I have been using foursquare for almost a month now and I have not acquired any points nor have I received any badges......not even the first time check in! I see people with badges for all sorts of different things but I still have yet to get the one that it seems like everyone gets with their very first check in. I have also added 2 or 3 new venues and have got no credit for that. And no new places checked in at have been counted......so if checking in to get these different things to happen is the point of this site.....then why am I doing this stuff in the first place if I don't receive anything! Lastly, I don't even see where you can keep track of the points.....no leader board that I can find anywhere.

I am not receiving all my check-in points. I will check-in for the first time in a day at a venue and not receive points. Recently, it has also been saying I am not receiving points because my phone says I am not close enough to the venue, when, in fact, it has me within 100 meters of the venue. Foursquare needs a major overhaul to make it more accurate on points and location. I am using an HTC Hero

So my spouse and I went out for a stroll.
We started at the hospital where she worked, so she could post a flyer. Checkin using my Motorola Droid. Walk a couple of blocks to the start of the Riverfront Trail. Search, not listed. Add listing. Checkin. Stroll along trail, come to Caras Park. Refresh. There it is on the list. Checkin. Continue through the park to where it turns into Bess Reed Park. Don't know why the city doesn't consider it all one area, but officially it's two adjoining parks, so find it on the list and Checkin. Pass through a couple of blocks of residential neighborhood and arrive in Kiwanis Park. Checkin.
But the app says I'm moving too fast, checking in too often. It'll list me here, but not give me credit for the visit. Moving too fast? Really? We're strolling, not power-walking or jogging, or heavens forbid cycling. We are moving at a normal pace from one location to another. And it's not at all unusual for there to be a series of parks along a river corridor, so this shouldn't come as a surprise to the app designers. Whatever. Stupid app. Moving on.
Cross the river on the foot bridge and now we are in John H Toole Riverfront Park. Refresh. Nothing changes. Refresh. Nothing. Search. Not listed. Add venue, Checkin. New error message. Phone thinks you are too far from this location. Um, I'm standing in the middle of it. Stupid phone. Stupid app. Continue stroll. Come to Clark Fork Natural Area. I added this one a couple of weeks back, I know it's in there. Refresh, refresh. There it is, third or fourth down the list. Checkin. Another error. Phone again thinks I'm too far from the location. The list of places goes out 3/4 of a mile, but at two blocks away from the listed address I'm 'too far'. Again, it shouldn't come as a surprise to the app designers that a park might have multiple entrances and cover some acreage. Stupid, stupid app.
So here's the thing. Why is the assumption that if I'm moving from location to location and not spending an hour at each that I must be lying when I check in? Why is it that the Foursquare FAQ says, "Don't worry, foursquare doesn't know where you are unless you check-in to tell us your location," but when I actually try to do so, Foursquare tells me I'm too far away? Do you know my location better than I do? Why, in the excessive zeal to stop 'cheaters' are you making it so difficult for folks going about their normal daily routine to use the app as intended, to check in each time we reach a venue?

Registering new location via iPhone app, and not receiving any credit or points. A notification popped up saying I registered the place, that I received points for registering and checking in, and that I also earned a badge. All is good. However, my account only has a record of my check in. Also, I never received an email or tweet saying I registered, checked in, or earned a new badge.
So, basically this new venue just miraculously appeared out of no where, and I happened to be at the right place at the right time. And the pop up was just a lie.
Also, the iPhone app either stalls or just crashes. If you're about to leave the place, you have to sit in your car for 5 minutes just for stuff to load and post. This is getting bothersome.

I went on a trip last Friday to Las Vegas. Only 2 of my checkins were reported, even though I checked in at over 2 dozen places. I can tell when it doesn't check me in, because it always says "This is your 1st checkin here." and doesn't give me any points. It's really bad when it did this to me today at work -- where I check in 3x a week!
And when you check in the 10th or 12th time that day (road trip!) and you get "this is your 2nd checkin today!" it leaves you saying "um, what happened to the other 10?"
This is non-useful to an extreme.
This is the Android client if that matters.

Often when checking into a venue the app will tell me its either my first check-in (when it is not) or it will tell me the wrong number of check-ins when I check-in. For example - today I did check-in number 5 at a location, the app told me it was my 3rd and did not give me any points at all. When I look at my info here on the web the number of check-ins are correct *on the web* but not on the phone.
These check-ins are all on different days
I am not checking into a duplicate location, its all the same one.
This is on the android app.
Is this a problem on my end or with the app?

This morning I went to the bank, coffee shop, and the mall next door which means I had several checkins in about a 10 minute time span. After the 1st one I received a message for all the others that due to my "Rapid Fire Checkins" I would not be receiving points and badges for the places I had gone. So several locations around my area are grossly misplaced by the map system (even though the address is right and Google maps shows the correct location for that address). This morning I checked in at a location that I've checked in at many times before, and suddenly it is denying any points or badges (I think this would have given me mayor for the location and Super Mayor badge) because it thinks I'm too far away.
No, idiot, I'm in precisely the right location, you have the location mapped wrong and no way for a "normal" user to correct it. (I have reported it here on the website but it apparently has not been corrected).
Gowalla has the location for this venue correct --- if your intent is to drive users to that software, you could not have found a more effective way to do it than with this "feature" of denying check-ins based on your faulty information with no possibility of recourse.
Suggestion: Add a "report bad location" or similar feature to the app; then AND ONLY THEN, consider restricting people's check-ins if they aren't at the reported location and the location hasn't been reported as suspect.
(And reporting as suspect shouldn't even be necessary; for this venue, I'd be willing to bet that looking at actual check-in locations vs. the stored map location would immediately indicate that the stored location is bogus).

I think foursquare users should be restricted from signing in to destinations that they are not physically at/near. This should be determined by the mobile device's GPS. Several users that I personally know are acquiring mayorships by checking into destinations they are not traveling to. I'm sure this is a common suggestion but no harm in making it!

Last night, I ended the day with my 24th unique venue check-in. However, my stats said it was my 25th. Weirder still, I hadn't received my Explorer badge as a result.
I was at a mall this morning at checked-in to my 25th venue (recorded as my 26th) ... still no Explorer badge. Being in a mall, every subsequent stop, I immediately checked-in thinking it would trigger the badge. Now I have a rapid-fire warning and feel I have completely screwed up my account :-P

I was on a trip 250 miles from my home. I checked into several places while I was on this trip and I didn't not get any points, nor did I get a Far Far Away badge.
Then I see this article on Mashable: http://mashable.com/2010/04/07/foursq...
Did you consider me cheating? WTF? This puts a very bad taste in my mouth. It only makes me love Gowalla even more.

One thing I have noticed is that the pins are wrong on the places I was standing in the middle of yet did not get points for. That does not, however, answer how I can create a location and immediately be too far away. I do end up going home and fixing it, since in the long run, I'll get points next time. It's disappointing to see that occur, but knowing I solved the problem for next time is good enough while TPTB work on a more permanent fix.

you keep telling me that i don't get any points because my phone says i'm not near the venue. but i'm standing INSIDE the venue. why did you implement this, i'm not trying to cheat!

I'm getting this message the last 24-36 hours, and it's happening fairly regularly, but suddenly. I'm not checking in from some other location; I'm physically at the location where I'm trying to check in, and it's a location where I've checked in many times before.
Example, Starbucks Support Center in Seattle. I check in daily. I'm sitting inside the building, at my cube, next to a window, and am connected on my iPhone via wireless (not cellular) as the building is fully wired for AT&T. I go to check in, and get the "you're too far away" message.
Is there something I should do differently? Have you guys changed something? Thanks.

If you are having a problem getting credit for a check in, goto this website and fill out the problem form. https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewf.... Hope this helps.

Hi Guys,
I have a solution which helps solve this problem, but this only works if you are the Mayor, or can get the Mayor to make a change to the 'pin location' on the map.
You need to log in online, and edit the venue then drop the pin to where it really should be, or at least move it slightly.
Foursquare seems to be happy if it thinks you are within 100 meters of the venue, so if you move the pin it can make a difference. I kept trying to check into my work, and it never worked, so moved the pin and finally it thought I was close so let me check in for the first time!
If you can edit, or contact the Mayor, it may make a difference!
Good Luck!-
But what if your not the mayor? I wish that foursquare could send out a message to everyone to double check their pins. Or at least it would be nice if we had the option to send messages to other people on foursquare to leave friendly reminders for them to double check their pins.

This is a great idea. My situation is strange that the pin on the map is correct — but when I try to check in....it says I'm not near it.
The place I am talking about recently moved - and I think there's a discrepancy between the name and Google maps — and where I put the location into 4square & the pin.
Hope they fix this soon!!-
If you are the Mayor, I think you should try and move it around, you might be surprised!

It's in the right place on the map. I moved it a smidge - to see if there was a difference. Still no dice (or points). :(

Here's some more info for those of you having trouble still:
http://techcrunch.com/2010/04/07/four...-
This is a good link and a good explanation.....if people stop cheating then we'll see more quality check ins. The issue will roll on for a few weeks I guess, people need to be patient I guess, and be honest with their check ins after they fix these issues.

While poorly placed pins are part of the problem, they certainly are not the only one.
Ever since the 'fixes' rolled out I've been dealing with odd responses from the foursquare app. Yesterday it suddenly decided that not only was I in Portland, Oregon (I'm actually in Montana), but it would only show me venues that were around 66 to 70 kilometers from wherever it thought my phone was. I didn't recognize any of them. I had to use mobile site to re-set my location and check into the deli I was at. That cleared up problems briefly, but it refused to update my location as I moved across town. Again it took a visit to the mobile site to check in and change the list of nearest venues to one that reflected reality
This morning, sitting in my office, I had to give it a full 30 minutes to find my correct location. It slowly updated, each time moving closer to where I actually was, and eventually I could find my office on the list. But at nearly 700 meters away from wherever the app thought I was, I didn't dare to checkin yet.
This is on a Motorola Droid, with the most recent software update.
I have been witnessing this sort of behavior ever since the most recent updates. It's not a functional program if I have to hang around for half an hour or bypass the app all together in order to legitimately check into my venues.-
If the developers drive away all of their loyal non-cheaters, they will only have cheaters left. Perhaps it would be better to address each cheater individually instead of catching all the loyal users in the net. They obviously don't understand the balance between type I and type II errors.

There are glitches. Not everyone is cheating. In my case I check in to a venue that I'm currently inside and it says I'm too far away. How is that cheating. Yes there are attention whores who fourscam and it needs to be stopped but not at the cost of accuracy while in the venue. Also there needs to be a way to check in to a spot you were at eaier based on previous gps data. Sometimes foursquare is down and you cannot check in at that time. There's got to be a way to accomodate this. It is a shame there are a few fakers who ruin the experience for everyone else.

I no longer believe that incorrect location data is the problem. This morning I was standing in front of Santa Clara Cycle Accessories. The location didn't show up nearby. I did a search, and it had the right address -- but was saying 4100 meters away. The top "nearby" was a Starbucks across the street -- which correctly showed as 24 meters.
So GPS was functioning. It knew where I was. It knew where Santa Clara Cycle Accessories is.
This is broken-ness in the application. Possibly just in the Android App, possibly in the shared location search.- view 2 more comments

Lahatiel -- I'm confused. Are you blaming the person who created the profile for moving the pin 2 miles away?
I've created a lot of sites, and I've never seen any ability to specify the pin location. Isn't the (initial) pin location set by Foursquare based on the address? -
-
Jo: No, I'm not blaming them for moving the pin (although yes, a venue's creator should have the ability to move the pins on the venue's main website page, just as superusers do). Foursquare's system doesn't actually place the pin, Google Maps does -- that's where Foursquare's system gets its info. And while Google Maps is the best system around for 4sq to use, it's not 100% perfect, 100% of the time. The Santa Clara Cycle Accessories venue was created (before I updated all the address info) with a street address of "993 El Camino Real" and a city of "Sunnyvale, CA" -- no East/West on the street,, no cross street given, and no zip code included. It looks to me like Sunnyvale has a stretch of El Camino Real that's designated "West El Camino Real" and a stretch that's "East El Camino Real" and both stretches appear to have an address of 993 on them. When I do a Google Maps search on "993 El Camino Real, Sunnyvale, CA" -- no east/west designation, no zip code -- this is what it gives me:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sourc...
Based on that limited info, which was originally entered for the venue page, Google Maps defaults to the West El Camino Real location... and the pin on that Google Map just happens to be at the corner of (West) El Camino Real and Mary Ave, right where the pin was on the 4sq venue map before I went in and fixed it. Now this isn't a situation that's going to happen often: seeing the address number on the same street in the same zip code of the same city, with the only difference being East/West on the street. But incomplete address data was entered into the Foursquare system, 4sq ran what it was given through Google Maps, and it put the pin at the spot Google Maps gave back. There's really no other way for 4sq to do this, and there's no way for 4sq to know if it's wrong (and fix it) unless someone tells them it's wrong -- which you just did (and I just did).
An unfortunate circumstance? Yes. But proof that Foursquare is broken and needs to be fixed (speaking only of this isolated instance, not the overall nature of their anti-cheat measures)? No. -

People reporting they are being told they are too far away need to verify the pin is in the correct place on the venue page, as it seems that is currently the major barrier to ensuring a check in is valid.
It might be cold comfort to those having problems, but the code does seem to be working - the leaders on the leaderboard still have lots of check-ins, but drastically reduced to what used to be there.- view 1 more comment

I've closed the "face", "brain" and "desk" locations.

ack154...I agree with you. My concern is why can't they ban that user/IP/phone instead of running off the good users. It may become a little onerous if we have to fill out a form to 'fix our checkin'. The latest changes seem to have solved my lack of checkins/rewards, but I fear the newer code changes if they aren't fully tested.
I'm not giving up yet. -

Over the past few days, whenever I check in somewhere Foursquare keeps telling me that I am not at the location that I am checking into and therefore am not getting credited for it. Its extremely annoying.

Foursquare telling me I am not where I am checking into.. -

Once again the Foursquare app randomly (?) changed my location to another town, this time Leavenworth, WA. And it showed me only locations many, many kilometers from where I actually was.. I'm not sure if I should be happy that it appears to be getting closer to Montana, or worried that it's heading towards Canada.
Since I'm not planning to checkin to any Canadian venues until our next trip there to visit friends, I think I'd like this odd behavior looked into. One minute I'm seeing possible venues pretty much at the distances I expect them to be, the next minute (or refresh) foursquare changes my location to one far away from where I actually am and I have to use the mobile site to re-set my current town and to checkin at the place I'm standing outside of.
It's frustrating, to say the least. -
-
This is especially frustrating when I just created the venue, now I go to check-in and I am too far away---! But I just told you where it was, you didn't even know it existed, now I am the one cheating. grrr.

I added a venue today from my Nexus One Droid, then my wife attempted to check in from her Motorola Droid, literally standing in the exact spot that I made the venue from, and was told that the venue is 2200 meters away and no points. I'm more tolerant of this but had been hyping 4SQ to her and she's like "why should I bother, this is dumb, I'm not doing it anymore" (she's been having this problem for 2 weeks or so).
Foursquare should consider that they might be throwing out the baby (new users) with the bathwater (jerks who fake checkins) here. Right in the middle of explosive growth, maybe not a good idea.
Also, FYI, I'm a Online Marketing Director for a Fortune 200 company that's been considering doing a program with 4SQ. My wife's experience gives me pause - don't want our brand sullied by a crappy user experience. -

I too have stopped receiving points for checkins AND was screwed out of a new mayorship because of it - this is getting old fast...

I am unable to check in anywhere????? Is my account locked????

I feel the "minute" system is unfair. Often, I check-in to a venue which is within another building, like a mall within 1-3 minutes of entering said original venue. This happened today while at an indoor Market and then checking-in to shoppes within it. I stopped receiving points the entire rest of the day! I hope this does not carry through to tomorrow. I will be pissed with all the effort I put forth. Its even tougher on SMS-users like myself because I receive the EXACT SAME message "OK, we've got you at ___X___" without "(+_points)" so I try checking-in AGAIN repeatedly until something shows. Otherwise, what's the point of using the service?? Really needs to be RE-worked through fairly for all users with a cellphone, ie, every HONEST foursquare player involved wrapping up their time in the service.

major issues with Android app. Just downloaded the latest, and it didn't fix the issues. Sitting right on top of locations, but app is telling me I am too far away. The wive's Blackberry app is working fine! What's going on? Just started happening within the last day.

So, where is the fix? I'm about ready to dump this thing because it is doing NOTHING for me!

recently i have added loads of new venues and got points for none becuase of 'rapid fire' which is stupid, why can't foursquare keep up with my life? if i go into a shopping centre i'll check into there and then a few mins later i'll be in a shop if theres no que and what i need is right in front of me i'm not going to be that long, am i? and sometimes i go to a place thinking i'm going to be ages so i check in and then plans change and i end up leaving but if i check in anywhere else i risk getting stuck in rapid fire for the rest of the day regardless of how long i leave between checkins. and today i just got 'ok we have got you at tescos express', i went from one supermarket to another (the first had run out of potatoes!) in a car, it didn't take long becuase Gedling and Netherfield are two towns right next to each other, but according to GPS they are zillions of miles away. i hate being called a liar lol. i can be in a building and its always listed as hundreds of meters away. i think every check in i've ever made from a venue/location i've been at has been listed as no less than 300 meters away! silllllllly! this is spoiling my fun!
i want to be able to check in at places to let my friends know i'm there, how ever long i'm there for without risking rapid fire for the rest of the day!
and i want an accurate location to come up rather than telling me i'm millions of miles away! i've lived in this city all my life and i've never heard of a place called 'shelford' but apparently thats where i live! -
