Constant Synching Every 3 Minutes
For some reason my copy keeps trying to sync the bookmarks every 3 minutes. Can you please make some kind of user setting for how long to wait between synchronizations?

Inappropriate?I can see that being annoying! Foxmarks for Safari is only supposed to automatically sync once every 30 minutes, or 5 minutes after it detects a local change.
Does the Foxmarks in the upper-right icon usually have a yellow "*" on it? That icon means that we think there are changes for us to sync - some other app is reporting "hey, I changed the bookmarks."
Do you also have Apple's MobileMe sync installed?
For now, I'm sorry to say that your only option is to turn off automatic sync. -
Inappropriate?For some reason the sync will complete and then almost immediately the icon turns to the yellow * again.
I do have MobileMe sync installed. Perhaps MobileMe is reporting a change every time it syncs because I haven't added any bookmarks and I still get the yellow *.
I’m trying to understand it a bit better.

Inappropriate?I did a manual MobileMe sync and in the middle of the MobileMe sync the Firefox sync started. This time there was no yellow star and the MobileMe sync finished with no yellow star. Hmm....
I’m perplexed.
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem - a sync every 3 minutes or so. I also get the growl (or popup notifications).
I use mobileme to snyc with my iPhone. I also use firefox as my primary browser on the mac and effectivly, safari on the iPhone.
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?I also get the Growl notifications but I use Safari on the Mac and on the iPhone. I do have Foxmarks and Firefox installed on my machine also.
I’m puzzled

Inappropriate?Latest update of Foxmarks Safari did not resolve the repeating sync issue.
I’m hoping for a solution

Inappropriate?0.0.26 fixed a different problem (certain URL encodings). However, it also provides some partial relief to this problem; there's now a manual setting to adjust the time between when we detect a sync, and when we kick off a sync. Currently, this is set to 5 minutes (300 seconds). You can change this by:
- Upgrade to version 0.0.26
- Stop Foxmarks for Safari
- From your home folder, edit the file: Library > Foxmarks > FoxmarksPrefs.plist
- Add a key "changeAutoSyncTime" with a value like "1800". This is the time in seconds; 1800 = 30 minutes
- Save FoxmarksPrefs.plist
- Start Foxmarks for Safari
We're still trying to diagnose the root cause: why it appears that there are bookmarks to sync, when there aren't. So far, this only seems to affect some MobileMe users, but not all of them.
Please bear with us... and we hope this interim solution makes Foxmarks for Safari more usable. -
Inappropriate?Thanks, Chuck! I made the edit to the file, then Foxmarks quit working completely. After I added the parameter, Foxmarks took me through the setup process again. It got to the part during the sync when it was downloading the bookmarks, then quit for no apparent reason. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling .26 and no good. Not sure what happened and can't seem to get around it. Any ideas?

Inappropriate?Hi Rob,
I'm sorry to hear that! Hrm, let's see if we can trouble-shoot. Could you send the last few dozen lines of your log file to betatest@foxmarks.com? -
Inappropriate?Hi Rob -
Alas, 0.0.26 appears to have introduced a completely separate bug (Foxmarks for Safari will fail if it runs into certain Firefox query strings). We've downgraded to 0.0.25, but expect to have a fixed version 0.0.27 out soon. -
Inappropriate?Thanks, Chuck! I have every confidence in you guys! Y'all have a fantastic product and I know this module will be a very welcome addition for those of us having to live with Mac and Windows. :)
I’m confident!

Inappropriate?I just upgraded to 0.0.27, still experiencing the problem. I am using MobileMe, but do not use it for bookmarks at all. I run both Firefox and Safari at once, both running Foxmarks. I do not notice Firefox Foxmarks sync or MobileMe sync as a cause for yellow star appearance.
I run Foxmarks for Safari, no yelow star over the Foxmarks icon. I manually request the sync (Foxmarks icon in meu bar, Synchronize Now). Log says (shortened):
Syncing...
Sync done
== Sync Finished ==
2 seconds after: Detected Apple bookmark sync to bookmarks and/or folders
Yellow star appears. I request the sync again (30 seconds after first):
Syncing...
No changes from server
Local store is clean; no local changes to send to Foxmarks
Sync done
== Sync Finished ==
Yellow star does not appear again. -
Inappropriate?Hi Lami,
We're still investigating. So far, it seems that everyone who has seen this problem also uses MobileMe. If someone who does NOT have MobileMe is having this issue, please let us know.
0.0.27 does not fix this problem, but it does enable the manual fix described above.
* Stop Foxmarks for Safari
* From your home directory, open Library > Foxmarks > FoxmarksPrefs.plist
* Add a key "changeAutoSyncTime" with a value like "1800"
- This is the time in seconds between how long we wait between detected a change, and doing a sync. By default, it is 5 minutes = 300 seconds. 1800 changes this to every half-hour.
* Save FoxmarksPrefs.plist
* Start Foxmarks for Safari -
Inappropriate?Hello Chuck,
I do not mind it sync every 5 minutes, I am trying to nail the reason. That is why I signed up for Beta, I do not expect it to work perfectly. I am trying do weird things with Foxmarks to find repeatable case, not just to get rid of something just for me :-) If you want me to test something, tell me and I will try, if possible.
One thing would help me in my effort - how often Foxmarks check underlying data (Safari bookmarks) for change? When I was paying attention, yellow star appeared in range of 2-10 seconds after syncing, approximatelly. Knowing the pattern could help me decide if I should wait for a while not touching anything, or I ca safely say whatever I done now did not affect Foxmarks.
I can give you my e-mail address if necessary. -
Inappropriate?Like everybody, I've got the same issue where Foxmarks is constantly updating. I never see the yellow sign, it just updates. As for MobileMe... I don't use it so I assume it is not causing my problem. The only other software I use for syncing anything is Plaxo which does not require iSync. This all said, when I use to sync my Palm with iSync I had constant problems so it may not be a Foxmarks issue but an iSync issue.... for now I've disabled autosync.

Inappropriate?We've released a new version of Foxmarks for Safari 0.0.30 which should help with this issue. I'd very much appreciate it if folks could try out 0.0.30 and let us know if it helps this problem. We've also improved the diagnostic information in our log file, so if you're still seeing problems, we'd appreciate it very much if you would please email your log file to: betatest@foxmarks.com
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Hello, I still have the problem with new version 0.0.30. I sent the log file as requested.
-
Inappropriate?Thank you for this information! In your log file, I can see the problem. Mac Mail is triggering an "echo sync" after we do a sync, which makes us think we should do a sync, and so on. 0.0.30 added an "echo suppressor", but it wasn't aggressive enough. Now I see how to fix this. Stay tuned, and thank you for your patience.

Chuck any movement on this issue? -
Inappropriate?hmm i installed a few days ago -- i have both firefox and safari -- and safari is almost never open.. but it insists on syncing every 3 min or so and i get a growl message (annoying)... i try to open the app from apps - and Nothing happens.... inst it suppose to open somehting?? (in firefox i can get to prefs from the add ons area) - it works fine in firefox...
cant tell what version it is since it wont open..
I dont use mobile me, or mac mail..
