Embrace the Social Web!
I recently read in one of the consumer forum postings that Xmarks has no plans for closer integration with Delicious. I think that this is a mistake. I would like to see Xmarks optionally integrate with users' Delicious account and other social Web services.
Xmarks is an indispensable extension with a lot of great features. I also use Delicious, and their official toolbar extension, but I don't want to import all of my (500+ and growing) Delicious links into my Firefox bookmarks. I use my Firefox bookmarks for sites that I visit and use regularly. I think of Delicious as my own personal library, only containing links to Web sites instead of books. I'm also actively using Twitter.
If Xmarks were to incorporate Delicious & Diigo links as well as Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, and MySpace connections, it would allow features such as Smarter Search and Site Info to be much more effective because they would be using data from a much larger pool of links. It would also allow you to introduce new features, such as People Info for the major social networks.
There would be a greater potential benefit to Xmarks as a company. The details of monetizing something like this are mostly a mystery to me, but I've observed that it seems to be somehow related to accurate and voluntary data collection and better targeted advertising.
From my perspective, the only drawback to Xmarks would be greater bandwidth and data storage requirements, but I'd like to know if there's some other problem with the idea that I don't see.
Thank you.

Inappropriate? We have no plans for this currently, but you're right that there's potential for good things there. Do you have any specific suggestions on what you'd like to see?
For example, I'm guessing you'd want the Suggested Tags feature when adding a site to your delicious collection; stuff like that? -
Inappropriate?Sure! I could probably come up with a bunch of related ideas.
Xmarks could look for certain tags in my Delicious account when it synchronizes. For example, I could tag something "Xmarks" in Delicious, then I would see it in a Delicious folder in my bookmarks next time Xmarks synchronizes. I currently implement something like this using the RSS feed from Delicious and a Firefox Live Bookmark.
There's a related feature that was part of the now defunct Foxylicious extension which automatically created nested folders for related tags. For example, if I tagged something both "politics" and "forums", I would find a "forums" folder in my bookmarks with a subfolder of "politics" as well as a "politics" folder with a subfolder of "forums".
Integration with any social web service could provide information and statistics that would enhance the "Smarter Search" feature. For example, links to Facebook or Twitter profiles could have highlights related to the user's Facebook or Twitter account. The number of followers, avatar picture, and relationship to the user (ie: friend, following, etc) could be represented in the highlight box.
I'm sure there's some kind of marketable benefit to Xmarks here. Part of it is described in the "Discovery Technology" on the About page. This would be greatly enhanced by incorporating the data from various social networks.
Part of what got me thinking about this is the number of extensions I have installed. I recently went through them and disabled all of the ones that I don't consider essential. It considerably decreased the start-up time of my browser, but there is some redundancy in the ones I've kept. Delicious Bookmarks and Xmarks are a great example since they both allow me to save links to pages I like and they both allow me to have access to those links at any browser I use.
This stuff is just off the top of my head. I'm sure that I could come up more, given time. Also, I think that once you get started adding social features, more and more related ideas will come. This is similar to the addictive way the social networks themselves work.
Thanks for your time :)

Inappropriate?Yea, delicious integration is really the key for me right now. I appreciate that there may be a level of competition here but for those of us who have already invested in a sizable delicious library, integration would really make this a <buzzword>killer app</buzzword>.
I’m hopeful

Inappropriate? That would be fantastic. I like the Xmarks bookmark structure, with the suggested tags and all the other features, and it would be great to integrate with delicious!!!
I’m hopeful

Inappropriate?also a deal-breaker for me... with delicious integration, or matching functionality of delicious (tags, most visited, etc) I'd be on board for sure
-
Inappropriate?I have tons of bookmarks organized in delicious and can only import them as a flat hierarchy in xmarks. This is the only reason I am sticking with delicious!
