Don't get Xmarks for IE, or Uninstall if you have Xmarks for IE
I highly recommend that everyone uninstall this product. All you have to do is read the other comments in this forum to see why.
Xmarks can only survive if they add a program that will get rid of what their program has duplicated. I don't see IE version of Xmarks bothering with this and that is where the problem originated on my computer. The Xmarks on Firefox doesn't do this, but now the bookmarks in Firefox (since they have been synced by the IE Xmarks with IE) are duplicated by at least 10 each. This is repulsive. This should not have been released to the public at this stage of development. And I highly resent being their unwitting "test group". Test it BEFORE you release it. Damn Microsoft!

Inappropriate? There does seem to be some really annoying feature using Xmarks with both Firefox and IE whereby all your folders end up get doubled or tripled after synchronizing..
As a result, I have used Tools - Internet Options - Programs - to disable Xmarks for IE.
It would be good if someone at Xmarks can sort this issue out as it would be great to be able to use Xmarks to coordinate between Firefox, IE and an iPhone -
Inappropriate?i agree with your sentiments, and appreciate the reply with suggested solution.

Inappropriate?Tim: You have more confidence in an IE product than I do, my friend. Unfortunately, I can't seem to simply download Foxmarks for Mozilla only. There doesn't seem to be a Foxmarks anymore. You did post a good little instruction for those who wish to wait though; the way to disable in IE. That's good for those who do not wish to uninstall and want to wait for a solution. I have little faith in that myself.
It can also be disabled in Mozilla Firefox: just click on Tools, Addons, scroll to Xmarks and click "Disable" then restart the browser.
Tina: Thanks for commenting. It's nice to know one is not alone in one's sentiments. I don't trust IE to fix this in any reasonable time if at all; in other words, not enough to keep it installed. For those who believe it will be fixed, Tim's suggestion is a good one. At least it allows Microsoft to show us (*cough, cough*) that it might actually do something in the next year to fix this. When it was a Mozilla Firefox addon only, it worked fine. It seems that as soon as IE took over, it got messed up royally. This is so common a problem in my experience (M.S. or I.E. do something and it's badly mangled), I have faith that it will NOT be addressed. But that's just me. I appreciate the comments so that there are more possibilities than uninstalling for those reading. To each his or her own!
Good luck to both of you and hope your clean up didn't take the 2 1/2 hours (with the help of Firefox addon "Bookmark Duplicate Detector 0.7.5) of grueling work mine did. If I went in manually on my IE browser to attempt cleanup, it would take far more than that. After 10 years online, I have a large collection of bookmarks.
I’m decided against keeping Xmarks.

Inappropriate?Nobodyz: I now understand your earlier exasperation - I have not come across a piece of software so annoyingly timewasting as Xmarks for IE since the days when I tried to make an HP Ipaq behave like a portable multimedia device (a highly masochistic exercise), . I have only wasted about 30ish mins as I found ways to organize and delete the (unwanted) copied folders but it is still highly irritating.
For anyone who uses Firefox and IE (half the planet?), I assume the same irritating error will occur. In the end I deleted this software from my laptop (via control panel, add and remove programs - but look for Xmarks, not Foxmarks)
To reload 'Foxmarks' on to Firefox, go to
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...
As you will see, its been renamed 'Xmarks'
Lastly I now seem to have problems using Xmarks on Firefox - maybe I will have to delete it and reload it - another waste of time ....
It does/did(?) work wonderfully on Firefox but, combined with IE, its a minor disaster area

Thank you. I went to control panel, add and remove programs but Xmarks isn't there...I looked carefully...it's not there. Will I have to delete Mozilla to dump this thing? -
TO PJ: Open your Mozilla Browser, click on "Tools" (next to Help at top) then click on "Addons". When the box opens, scroll up or down until you see Xmarks. It will either give you the option to "Disable" or "Uninstall" or both. Choose the one you wish to do, either will stop the continuing problem of duplication. Also, you will still have to spend some time cleaning up your bookmarks as they will most likely already be duplicated. -
Thank you, this worked easily! Rec'd this instruction earlier today, used it exactly and the annoyance and frustration is over. I apologize I didn't write down person's email name and for using caps in my email. -
Inappropriate?I was right in my last comment - I did have to uninstall and reload Xmarks on Firefox BUT A WORD OR WARNING. As far I can tell, you will find that all those erroneously duplicated folders/websites will STILL BE ON THE XMARKS SERVER when you reinstall it on Firefox (there's a link that allows you to see them). So if you do normal (merged) resync after reinstalling YOU MAY WASTE ANOTHER 2 HOURS!
I got round this by clicking the box that 'keeps the bookmarks on my computer and discard those on the server' (or something similar) - you need to be sure of course that you are happy with what is on the your PC
Having wasted another half hour, I think/pray everything is now ok

Good point, Tim. That's why I put "Don't get Xmarks..." at the beginning of the title of this thread. I really wish I had saved myself the wasted time. But now, I have it gone from both browsers, my bookmarks in Firefox all sorted out (by hand, by me) and I'm happy. Think I will save my bookmarks my own way for a while.... :) -
Inappropriate?LAST THOUGHT:
Does anyone at Xmarks actually read this stuff? I ask as it would be nice to one day be able to sync between Firefox and iPhone bookmarks
Tim -
Yep, we're definitely reading; just sometimes takes us a while to respond. :)
Right now it's possible to synchronize to the iPhone if you're using Mac OS X--the Xmarks for Safari software synchronizes to Safari under OS X, which can then synchronize to the iPhone. We're also hoping to do direct iPhone synchronization someday, but for now I think the best option is the iPhone-optimized version of http://my.xmarks.com/ -
Inappropriate? If they didn't read it, I just did. Stupid X-mark showed spyware on my computer, and made a bloody mess , until I looked up this site and read all the reports .... Had to go to tools, addons, and unistall it..
Thanks guys for this posting... You just don't know how much you help !!!
Ruddie
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Sorry for the delayed "official" response--it's been a busy month!
We're really sorry for the trouble you've all encountered with Xmarks for IE--the underlying motivation for producing the Xmarks software is to make things easier and headache-free, so I can understand your frustration when that's not how it works out.
Occasional bookmark duplication is something we've seen in earlier versions of Foxmarks for IE, but we'd been able to fix most of the primary causes of that behavior, and Xmarks for IE includes the fixes we'd implemented. Thus, I'm not quite sure why this is happening.
For anyone who's willing, please post which version of Xmarks (or Foxmarks) for IE you're using, which version of IE, and which version of Windows. Additionally, I have a sneaking suspicion that uploads might be part of the problem, so if you've recently performed an upload to the Xmarks server, please point that out as well!
In the meantime, if you ever see duplication that's not easily cleaned up, you can revert to a previous version of your bookmarks via the "Explore & Restore" tool at http://my.xmarks.com/
Thanks for bringing this problem to our attention! We'd very much like to get it fixed up. -
