Firefox crashes when I try to create a password sync PIN
Firefox crashes every time I try to setup Foxmarks password sync. Foxmarks works great for regular bookmark sync, but as soon as I go to settings and check the password sync box, the create pin windows comes up and then Firefox crashes. I'm running on Gentoo Linux amd64, and it crashes whether I run the 64 bit version or the 32 bit version of Firefox 3.0.3. I don't have any other problems running Firefox, running Java or Flash in Firefox, or using various other plugins or add-ons. This is the only time I'm seeing Firefox crash. I'm willing to do any tests or debug things if you let me know what you need me to do.

Hi Everyone,
We've been working hard to find a solution to this problem. The good news is, we think that we have one! However, before we release our solution to everyone, we'd like your help in testing it. If you are interested in helping us verify our solution, please install the interim test version that we have linked to below.
Please be warned: this is only a test client to help verify that we have solved this and a couple of other minor issues. This version of the client is not intended to be used in the long term and you should upgrade as soon as a new version is available on the official Mozilla site.
Phew, now that that's out of they way, here's the link:
Download the Test Client v2.5.1
Have a go and tell us if the crashing problems go away. Thank you all for your continued patience and support.

Inappropriate?Hey tonysnc,
We were having some issues just a few moments ago on our servers which, although unlikely, may have affected you. Could you please give this a try again and let us know if the same thing happens?
If Firefox still crashes for you, let us know and we'll see what we can do.

Well, it's hard to tell, but this may have partially solved the problem. I was able to successfully input my PIN and synchronize passwords running the 64-bit Firefox. But after another restart it crashed when I tried to sync. The 32-bit version seems to crash every time, but the 64-bit version crashes intermittently. I've successfully sync'd again about 2 or 3 times since it started working, but it crashes about 50-70% of the time when I try to sync. It's totally a roll of the dice now.
The only other thing I noticed and changed before this started working was the Encryption setting. For some reason it was set to Login only, so I changed it to Encrypt All. Not sure if that had anything to do with it starting to work or not. -
Inappropriate? Also, please send us the url's for your crash reports. (Enter about:crashes in the Firefox 3 address bar to see the list of reports.)
-
My firefox 3.0.3 failed to send out the crash reports. But I can see the dump files in ~/.mozilla/firefox/Crash Reports/pending/ . If you give me an email address, I can send you the dump files as attachments. -
The Linux version of Firefox does not appear to support the about:crashes menu. When I type that in the URL bar and hit enter I get "The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded." -
Same as onyxperiod - problem began immediately when foxmarks was upgraded to 2.5.0.

And it crash or stall when syncing bookmark for auto sync or manual sync. -
Inappropriate?I removed my ~/.mozilla directory and ran firefox 3.0.3 on Linux. Then I installed foxmark 2.5.0 as the only plugin. firefox crashes when the foxmarks setup wizard kicks in.
-
I use firefox 3.0.3 on linux, too. -
My problem begins immediately after I upgraded to foxmarks 2.5.0. However firefox 3.0.3 has failed to send out the crash reports. They are stuck in a pending directory under ~/.mozilla . If you send me your email address, I can send you the crash report dump files. -
I have just tested foxmarks 2.5.0 with firefox 3.0.3 on Windows XP. It works without any problem. -
Inappropriate? Our impression at this point is that the problem occurs only on Linux. We've seen a few crash reports now and are analyzing them to see what we can learn.
@onyxperidot: please send your reports to support at foxmarks.com.
I’m confident that we'll get this fixed.

Inappropriate?about:crashes works for me in linux -- make sure your not using about:crash
-
Yup, tried both, neither work. It may be an issue with the Gentoo build. -
Inappropriate?I don't run a Linux machine, I run 32 bit Windows XP (both at home and at work) and Firefox 3.0.3. Firefox never got to the crash part, it hung up trying to finish the install, and lost all customization of the toolbars. the tab that was presumably going to open up an information page about Foxmarks never finished opening, and after an hour at home I gave up and manually closed Firefox. At work I disabled Foxmarks, downloaded the previous version, and disabled the Update check, and Firefox is working just fine again (although I had to redo every single customization of the toolbars). It is a pity, becasue the synching of passwords sounds like a cool feature, although I currently use LastPass to store my passwords, rahter than the Firefox Password Manager.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? For the benefit of those of us affected by this problem, it would be nice if we could install a stable version of Foxmarks prior to 2.5.0 on Linux. A URI of such would be much appreciated.
-
I just found the answer to my own question. The previous versions are available on the Foxmarks download page. -
Inappropriate?I searched Foxmarks on the Firefox Add-ons page, scrolled down to the "See all versions" link, and that took me to an archive of previous versions. Here is the direct link:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...
Hope that helps, until the problem is tracked down and fixed (as I am sure it will be soon).

Inappropriate?Problem NOT related to password sync. v2.5 crashes firefox 3.0.3 on linux just on bookmark sync.
firefox is Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092416 Firefox/3.0.3 -
Does anybody know what was the first version of foxmarks that supports password sync? I really like this feature, but I can't have my Linux versions bailing out constantly. I have multiple installs in different places that I keep sync'd, some Windows and some Linux, so this is really a key feature for me. -
Inappropriate?Having the same problem. I launch Firefox. Autosync kicks in, I am prompted for my password, I type it in and then it crashes.

Inappropriate?Here's the latest:
All signs point to the underlying cause of this problem being a platform-specific bug in Firefox that affects only Linux users. (@Sean Murphy: your problem is likely unrelated to the one being discussed here.)
Specifically, under some circumstances, Firefox crashes while processing HTTP headers. We are indeed doing something different with headers in this version compared to previous versions, but the facts that the problem appears only on Linux platforms and it causes the entire browser to crash both point at a latent Firefox bug that we have, unfortunately, exposed.
We're working on characterizing the problem so that we can fix it or deliver a work-around ASAP. In the meantime, users who are encountering this problem should be able to revert to the previous version.
Apologies for the inconvenience. We'll post here and on our blog when we have more news.
I’m confident that we'll get this fixed soon.
-
Thanks !! -
Inappropriate? Are there any known side-effects of syncing different versions of foxmarks? Or, to put it this way: do I have to downgrade my working windows-version too?
-
Foxmarks 2.5.0 is backwards-compatible with the previous version of Foxmarks insofar as bookmark synchronization is concerned, so you don't need to downgrade your Windows browser's extension. -
Inappropriate?hmm, so it seems to be firefox problem at the end?
Weird that just some bad headers can make it crash like that...
maybe until this get fix smoothly linux users should get back to the best, reliable backup command I named: rsync!
Otherwise keep the good work, your addon is cool (just a shame that you're obviously a bunch of ZindoZ developerz ;)
I’m all right
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for the hard work Todd, Gaurav and the rest of the Foxmarks developers. It's been less than 24hrs and you seem to have a solid idea of what's wrong and a plan to deal with it. That's impressive. Let me know if there's any testing I can do to help out. (I backup my data and configs carefully and have 2 weeks of running backups, so I'm not concerned about firefox bombing out and corrupting anything.)

Inappropriate? On Ubuntu 7.10 with Firefox 3.0.3, Firefox crashes after about 1 minute or so. I guess it's when Foxmarks tries to automatically sync. Anyways, deactivating Foxmarks solves the problem. For now I have solved this problem by reinstalling the previous version.

Inappropriate?Actually, I am hesitant to believe this is a Firefox problem since the extension worked like a charm in my computer at home (Ubunty Hardy + Firefox 3.0.3) but freezes every time I try at work (Fedora 8 + Firefox 3.0.3).
Also, I don't think only 35 ppl use firefox on linux, if this was consistent you would have a lot more ppl complaining.
Or did I just get a lucky sync in at home? Maybe I am the single linux user with this working? too cool to be true!
I’m happy at home, sad at work
-
I agree with you that there must be far more than 35 people using Firefox+Foxmarks on Linux.
At this moment, we have 20 people who have reported this problem here, and there must be many more who may not know or bother to report their problem here. -
Well all I am saying is that I don't think this is a Firefox bug as the Foxmarks ppl suggest. And if it is, is not consistent because my setup at home is working well. It may be wise looking somewhere else. -
A good crash report with a stack trace, such as the one posted by svegeni, should help both the Firefox developers and the Foxmarks guys to pin point the problem. -
I agree... would you mind telling me how I can do that? -
about:crashes only shows a crash report 1 month old (don't even remember what that was for) -
The 'breakpad' crash reporter in my firefox 3.0.3 is broken. It fails to submit any crash report to the mozilla bug tracker. I can only look at the pending crash reports in $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/Crash Reports -

Sorry to inform you that, at on least the 64-bit version of Firefox under Fedora 9 (multiple systems) Foxmarks repeatedly causes crashes after a few minutes--whether FF is idle or active. The problem was occasional before I upgraded Foxmarks to the latest release and has now progressed to the point where I uninstalled all plugins leaving just Foxmarks and the crashes were still occurring pretty regularly. Removal of Foxmarks resolved the issue and Firefox is again rock solid. -
brashemus: Which version of Foxmarks are you using? We're pretty confident we fixed that issue in version 2.5.3, so if you're using an earlier version, please upgrade!
