Foxmarks interacting with Read It Later
Foxmarks keeps copying my Read It Later folder. I mark it as a folder to not be copied, but somehow I now have several Read It Later folders on the server.

Inappropriate?Could this have something to do with the GUID set in about:config isreaditlater.folder ?
-
Inappropriate? There's currently no method for marking a folder as "not to be copied". If you mean that you set up a Profile that excludes that folder, it's possible that you had already synchronized that folder to the server, then used the profile excluding that folder on the computer with Read It Later installed. This would then create a new folder for Read It Later, which would then be synchronized to the Foxmarks server.
I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to achieve here, so I'm not sure what to recommend--are you trying to prevent this folder from synchronizing to other computers? -
I have 2 profiles and use at least 4 computers (2 home and 2 work). In all of my profiles I have Read It Later excluded. I am not sure how I wound up with 3 Read It Later folders. -
Inappropriate? Can you provide more details on your set-up? The "exclusion" feature doesn't prevent a folder from being synchronized from your computer to the Foxmarks server. It only prevents the folder from being synchronized to your computer.
Thus, if you have Read It Later (RIL) on several computers, but set any of those computers to the Bookmark Profile which lacks the RIL folder, the RIL folder will be regenerated when RIL next runs. Thus, each Bookmark Profile which has the RIL folder removed will generate a new one and synchronize it to the Foxmarks server.
To restate slightly differently: Unselecting a Read It Later folder from a Bookmark Profile will cause that folder to be removed from any computer assigned to that Bookmark Profile.
Does that match what you're seeing? -
Aha! So when foxmarks synchronizes, it is deleting the folder from my local PC. RIL then re-creates the folder on my local and foxmarks picks it up again!
OK, so if that's the case, how do I avoid a conflict between RIL and Foxmarks? Can you build a "ignore this local folder" feature? -
Exactly! I'm not sure, though, how Foxmarks synchronizing the RIL folder is causing a conflict--do you not want the same unread list on all computers? -
I want RIL to manage itself. There are computers that may not have RIL installed. There are computers that may not have Foxmarks installed. I may choose to remove things from RIL via their website. If Foxmarks synchronizes that folder, I think I'm likely to see things I've already read. -
Inappropriate?Re: "want RIL to manage itself". Fair enough. For now, unless the RIL creator decides to store the extension's data outside of the root bookmark folder, your only option with Foxmarks seems to be creating profiles that exclude certain RIL folders from synchronization. This is a complicated measure that's discussed a little bit in this other thread:
http://getsatisfaction.com/foxmarks/t...
Basically, you create a profile for each RIL computer that includes the RIL folder for that specific computer and excludes the other RIL folders from other computers. Then an additional profile that excludes all RIL folders for any computers where you don't use RIL at all.
It seems a lot of extensions like to store information in the bookmarks folders, though, so we'll consider making it possible to just completely exclude some top-level folders from synchronization. Thanks for the details! It was quite helpful to understand better the parameters of the issue. -
How about a feature to set Foxmarks to ignore certain tags? RIL has the ability for me to auto-tag entries I flag. Also, I could tag which FM profile I want a link to go to. I could bookmark at Work and have it go to my Home group. I could mark a bookmark to only be kept on the local PC. -
Inappropriate?Hey Eric,
This is Nate, RIL's developer.
Could you elaborate on what you mean by 'store the data outside of the root bookmark folder'. Read It Later user's can pick the folder they want to use as their Read It Later folder, so if there is an area in Firefox's bookmarks a user could create a folder that Foxmarks wouldn't see then this would be an easy solution. That's what it sounded like from what you said, I just wanted to find out more about it.
Otherwise, in general, RIL and Foxmarks can work together, but it's suggested that if you use Foxmarks for syncing (if installed) over RIL's syncing.
The other issue is because Read It Later creates a Read It Later folder when installed, this can cause duplicate RIL folders since Foxmarks will see them differently, as Alan noted. You just need to tell RIL which folder to use. I'd suggest following these steps:
1. Start on computer A.
2. Make sure there are no duplicate RIL folders in your bookmarks.
3. Sync your bookmarks to Foxmarks
4. Go to computer B.
5. Sync your bookmarks to Foxmarks
6. If there are two RIL folders, go into the Read It Later options and choose which folder to use (should be the one that just came over from Foxmarks)
7. Remove the duplicate. -
Inappropriate?Hi Nate --
Sorry for the delayed response--I been hopping around like spittle on a griddle lately.
I was being specifically obscure about the "outside of the root bookmark folder" bit--Foxmarks only synchronizes data that's stored in the main bookmark hierarchy in Firefox, and I'm pretty sure there are other places to store URLs in Firefox. Probably not as easy to get to, so I'm definitely not recommending it as an alternative--I was just trying to illuminate why there's this strange interaction for alanjstr.
Thanks for the pointers on how to better handle the behavior! My solution using Foxmarks Sync Profiles is unnecessarily complex in comparison. -
I sent Nate an example from Sage Too of how it can create a folder outside the normal one. At the moment, I'm just getting problems with duplicated items on my RIL list. However, it is manageable. I'm now using FM on 3 computers, 2 of them have FM for IE and FX. RIL is on 4 computers. Yeah, I like to mix it up. -

Inappropriate?I've actually starting playing around with giving the users an option to save outside of the root folder, but it does bring about other complications. If I get it worked out, I'll post something here.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?I've posted on my site here about this issue. I've provided some temporary solutions and will continue to update this as the issue moves forward:

Inappropriate? Here's a solution that I'm going to try out and I think it can work.
Turn off all synchronising with RIL on all machines and only use Foxmarks. This will keep everything in sync, but has one limitation. You won't be able to use your RIL list via readitlaterlist.com as it will be out of date.
However, you can access the list through my.foxmarks.com on a destktop or laptop and therefore get to your RIL list. I mainly use RIL on my mobile as this is the best tim to 'Read stuff later'. Conveniently there is a mobile site for Foxmarks:
http://mobile.foxmarks.com/
I store the mobile bookmark and read everything from there. Hope that helps

Inappropriate? This has been resolved in the upcoming 2.0 version of Read It Later:
