Foxmarks uses Firefox's password manager to store your password. For this to work smoothly, you have to allow Firefox to store your password, which you can do by navigating to Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Private Data -> Settings and then unchecking Saved Passwords.
Additionally, we've had a report of turning on the "Always clear my private data" setting causing the password to be "forgotten", so you might look into that (in the same menu tree).

Inappropriate?this does not resolve the issue for me unfortunately. i have unchecked both options. only after i log into the website does it sync. i've also typed in my password and checked remember password.

It's possible that Firefox just isn't saving passwords for you properly. Mozilla has some possible fixes listed here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/R... -
both the foxmarks.com and foxmarks sync passwords appear to be saved properly in the saved passwords under security options. i've tried deleting and resetting them with no luck. i have also upgraded to 3.03 -
Inappropriate?I have been a fire fox user since 1.5 and was an early adopter of foxmarks. I have always had firefox set to not ask for/remember passowrds AND clear private data each time the session ends, never had this problem until two weeks ago. Love the product but will be forced to ax or at least disable it until this can be resolved. I cant deal with the popup every 45 seconds.

Exactly the same here. Sad that Xmarks 3.1.0 won't save passwords on its own. I understand that the technical undertaking of storing an Xmarks password would require storing it somewhere, but the other situation of allowing Firefox 3.0.0.10 to remember ALL my passwords just so Xmarks can have an easy go.... Nah. Seems like I have no fine grained controls anymore. All we would need here is a text input diversion if not using Firefox to store it, a compression run, and store it in a config file with everything else. To use the stored password, run an integrity test and load the decrypted password. After that it is just a few options in the menus. Just want my Firefox user settings to be decided based on Firefox needs, not based on Xmarks needs. -
Inappropriate?JL: Did you confirm/uncheck the "saved passwords" option as described in the original answer to this FAQ entry?
ticotexas: Your password store might be corrupted for some reason; try the solution described here to reset your password store. -
Inappropriate?thanks. i am wondering if it may have to do with an extension i use called Sxipper for saving personal data and passwords. i will try disabling it and see what happens.
-
Inappropriate?it seems to remember my password for longer if i toggle off the remember password box and type in my password at the pop-up. the next time it forgets, i toggle the box back on. and keep repeating this whenever it forgets. (it's weird that toggling off will make it remember...at least for a while.)

Inappropriate?Cannot find - Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Private Data -> Settings

Inappropriate?perry: Are you running Windows Firefox, or something else? The Tools > Options path is different on different operating systems, so it might be under Firefox > Preferences (Mac OS X) or somewhere else.

Inappropriate? It seems that my login information is now holding without me having to re-enter it. I don't know how that finally happened but I'm just glad it is now holding.
With all these people having concerns about logging in, don't you think that you should eliminate logging in altogether? As I mentioned earlier, all that Foxmarks does is list my stored bookmarks in an orderly fashion (which is great)? If you're dealing with my checkbook (ie Quicken) yes, that has to be confidential and protected, but not a bunch of neatly listed public website. -
Inappropriate?Uncleirv: Foxmarks allows both reading and writing of your bookmark data; would you be okay with anyone who knows your username having the ability to delete all your bookmarks? This is the primary motivation for having passwords on Foxmarks accounts; the other being that some people don't want their bookmarks being public knowledge.

Inappropriate?Eric: I didn't realize that this program is both read and write capable. I'm not sure why the write capability, but now I understand the need for password protection. thanks
-
Inappropriate?Hi. I came here at Eric's request to see if this thread pertained to my recent issue, and it DOES. Also, I believe I have FOUND the solution. I was getting the same annoying popup of the Firefox master password box every time Foxmarks synced. This can be stopped, so that it will only ask you once for the master password shortly after you open Firefox. So long as Firefox remains open, Foxmarks will sync automatically without bugging you, if you have that turned on, as I do. But understand that if you close and later re-open Firefox, it will ask one time again.
Go into the Foxmarks Settings and click Advanced. The first listing is Connection Security. Mine had defaulted to Login Only. And that is what causes this issue. That setting apparently tells Foxmarks that it can only sync if you log in EACH TIME it wants to sync.
Change that to Encrypt All. It appears to still use the passwords, so you are still secure, but it won't keep bugging you to log in.
Eric, if I am wrong about this still being secure, please let me know. But that is what it looked like to me.
I have not had any problems at all since I did that. You can always open the Foxmarks Settings / Account window and look at the time stamp on the last sync. Mine are showing that it does auto-sync while Firefox is running. So I think the issue is solved for me.
Cheers!

Great to hear you got it working, Zoandar! You're right that Encrypt All is as secure as Login Only, though I'm a little flummoxed as to how that would have fixed the issue for you.
No matter, though! I happily embrace anything that fixes a problem. :) -
Inappropriate?Well, although I am not privy to how the program was written, this is how I reasoned it 'might' work:
"Log-in Only" pretty much means, "the only time you will be able to sync is by logging in" to my way of thinking. That is exactly what Foxmarks was doing - making you log in each time it wanted to sync .
So I looked at the remaining choices, and decided that Encrypt All might just mean "still encrypted, but it won't ask you to long in "every" time" like the word "only" implied. And in fact, that is precisely what it now does. As long as Firefox (thus, Foxmarks) is continually running, you only need to log into Foxmarks once. It typically asks within 30 seconds or so of opening Firefox. If you do close Firefox, then when you re-open it again later, Foxmarks will ask again for the log-in one time.
Since I use the password feature in Firefox, I will eventually have to enter my master password anyway, if I go to a site that needs a log-in. So I don't mind entering that the single time, and it has the bonus of getting that step accomplished "up front". The only tiny complaint I would have is that when it does happen, it pops up over top of whatever else I happen to be typing at the time. A slight annoyance at the most.
Cheers!

Inappropriate?Longtime FoxMarks user here......annoyed with it not saving my passwords. It always did until a few months ago.
I always cleared my private data, have encrypt all set, checked remember password, but still every session, I am asked to enter my password.
I guess I will dump XMarks...it's just too annoying now to be convenient.

As you'll note above, I complained about the same thing ~4 months ago. I don't know why but since then (and I use Mozilla Firefox), everything works well. I put in the first digit/letter of my user ID and the rest pops up. Once entered, my password pops up as well. I'm now a happy Foxmarks camper. -
I don't have Firefox. My computer was fresh installed. No matter I select Login Only, Encrypt All or No Encryption, XMarks keeps prompting for the password. This is a real pain.
