foxmarks won't install in ff3/vista
I can't install foxmarks 2.5...the older versions worked fine. I have created a new profile, and it still won't show up in the add-ons. As another user in vista, I did upgrade successfully, but in my main user, it will not show up.

No, once installed the add-on and restart FF3, there is no sign that Foxmarks has been installed. Hence, no foxmarsk@kei.com folder...
I can install all other add-ons without any problems.

Inappropriate? This is most likely an issue with Firefox--do other new add-ons install correctly? Check the help page on the Mozilla support site for some ideas:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/U... -
Inappropriate?others install fine...I have made a few new profiles and they all won't install foxmarks...is there an older version I can try to install?
-
Inappropriate?Older versions of Foxmarks can be found here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...
Since other add-ons can install successfully for that Firefox profile, I'm not sure what might be happening--let us know if it's just the most recent version you're having trouble with! -
Inappropriate?Found the problem: google gears. I disabled that add-on, and low and behold, it works.
Apparently foxmarks and google don't like each other much.
I’m annoyed and happy at last
-
Good to hear you got it working! Odd that Google Gears would conflict, though--we at Foxmarks like Google quite a bit, so perhaps it's just that Google doesn't like Foxmarks? (I hope that's not the case, though; c'mon, Google, reciprocate the love!) -
Hm, I wasn't able to replicate this behavior at all--does the problem recur if you re-install Google Gears? -
Inappropriate?I had old foxmarks installed and google gears ... when I installed the new foxmarks or upgraded, it didn't appear. Did you try it that way? I reactivated google gears and everything is ok so far.
-
Inappropriate?I hadn't tried that way, no, but had no luck replicating it that way, either. I wonder if it's perhaps something specific in your Google Gears settings that might be contributing to it.
-
Inappropriate?I couldn't replicate it either, and now I can't get foxmarks to install again on another computer....frustrating!
-
Inappropriate? All other add-ons install just fine, by the way.
-
Inappropriate?I have FF2 (with all recent updates) on a Vista machine - can't install Foxmarks! It says it installs and will need to restart FF, but the restart brings me right back to the download page and nothing has happened. No wizard, no indication that Foxmarks is actually installed, nothing in the tool menu...
I've tried half a dozen times now.
Any suggestions? -
Inappropriate?Unfortunately, I've never been able to replicate this behavior at all, so I'm not sure how to fix things for you. The installation process relies on what Firefox provides, and if none of the suggestions on their site are working for you, I'm at a loss for further steps.
Just to confirm--a new Firefox profile exhibits the same behavior?
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/B...
This only happens on Windows, is that right? I wonder if there's something about the configuration of your OS that's causing this. -
Inappropriate?Hi, I've got the same problem as Lucy. I use FF3, Vista 64bit and I am unable to install Foxmarks. I have tried it several times. There was no problem with FF2. All other add-ons work fine. (When I install Foxmarks everything looks fine. FF restarts and Foxmarks doesn't appear anywhere. It is not even listed in the AppData of Mozilla Extensions)
-
Same problem. I have Vista and FF3, Foxmarks won't install. I've tried running it as an administrator and it makes no difference. Downloads fine, asks to restart, then is not there once Firefox restarts. -
Inappropriate?ghost, Static416, or anyone else: Does a new Firefox profile fix things for you?
-
Do you mean a new Windows user account? I'll try that out tonight and let you know.
I previously had Foxmarks installed and at some point it disappeared, that's why I was trying to reinstall it. Around the same time it disappeared I had denied an update request from Foxmarks, so that may have had something to do with it. But it won't install now.
I've tried different versions of Foxmarks and it makes no difference. I've tried reinstalling Firefox and nothing. But I'll try using a new Windows User Account tonight. -
Sorry, I was referring to a suggestion that I had made previously in this topic--instructions for creating a new Firefox profile can be found here:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/B... -
Inappropriate?just tried it with a new ff profile. It still doesn't work.
-
Inappropriate?I'm having the same exact problem with Firefox 3 using XP. I'm able to install other add ons but with Foxmarks it just takes me back to the download page after restarting. Tried a new profile, tried deleting the extensions files per the advice given in the Mozilla forums. Tried uninstalling Firefox 3 completely and removing all registry entries pertaining to Firefox. Tried reverting to Firefox 2. No matter what I try I still get the same problem. Actually that's not quite true: I installed Firefox Portable on a USB stick and I'm able to install and use Foxmarks just fine on the same computer as long as I'm running Foxmarks with Firefox Portable off the USB stick.
-
Inappropriate?fatdms: Since it works with Firefox Portable, that suggests that a new Firefox profile folder (see my previous replies here) would fix things for you.
Static416: Are you using 64-bit Windows as well?
ghost: Does a foxmarks@kei.com folder show up in your extensions folder in your Firefox profile after trying an install? (I should point out that I am now grasping at straws with this question--I have no idea whatsoever why installation isn't working for you.) -

So very strange! I've not had any luck tracking down a 64-bit system to try replicating this behavior, but there might be one last thing to try:
- Download the Foxmarks .xpi file to your desktop
- Unzip the file (you may need to rename it to .zip in order to get this to work) into a directory called foxmarks@kei.com
- Quit completely out of Firefox.
- Move that directory into your extensions folder in your Firefox profile folder
- Restart Firefox
The above is pretty much what Firefox does when you install a new extension--I'm not sure what there is different about Foxmarks that would prevent installation in this case, though.
One thing that occurs to me just now--Foxmarks, unlike many other extensions, is actually "signed" to indicate that it came from a trusted source. I wonder if maybe that's what's preventing a proper installation, that your Firefox is getting hung up on the signing somehow. Not sure. :/ -
what a nightmare! I now run two PC's, one Vista Business and another Vista Ultimate (VU) as backup (replaced by VB machine after HDD crash). Foxmarks installed no problems at all on the newly built VU machine, but after an an add-on **update** to Foxmarks on the VB machine, nothing on earth would allow it to install. uninstalling FF3.0.6, deleting all the profile folders (in Local and Roaming) and re-installing wouldn't work. But this unzip, rename to foxmarks@kei.com and move to extension folder did. WHY!? I could have gone bald over this! -
Inappropriate?I had the same problem , but I found the solution...
I don't know why, but the Add-on from this Mozilla page installed just fine:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?@ Eric: I followed your instructions and it works. Thx!
@ mbeck: your suggestion didn't work.

Inappropriate?@ Eric: Can you tell me where I can find the .xpi file to download?
Thx! -
Lucy: The xpi can be downloaded from the Mozilla add-on site: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire... -- you may need to right-click the link to download it as a file instead of installing it, though. -
Inappropriate?Just install via the link I mentioned above
-
Inappropriate?Presently our best guess regarding the source of the problem is the extension "signing" that Foxmarks has. The most recent version of Foxmarks that wasn't signed is 2.1.0.12, available here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire....1.0.12
Does that version install successfully for anyone having this problem? Additionally, does 2.5.0 or 2.5.3 install okay? (If so, that would suggest the signing isn't actually the problem.) -
tried 2.1.0.12, 2.5.0 and 2.5.3 - NONE of them install. No error message - just simply goes through the install procedure - restarts Firefox, then nothing. Not installed - no error message.. -
Hi, I've been having this problem using most recent version as of today 2/21/08 and nothing was installing either, but I rolled back to 2.1.0.12 and it installed great. Question though, should I not do any updates of the software ever??? -
Inappropriate?I used the solution Eric suggested and it worked like a charm! You DO need to rename the file extension to .zip!
I’m HAPPY!

Inappropriate? For me the version Version 2.0.47.4 — June 16, 2008 — 290 KB worked. I will try newer versions as well and let you know
-
Inappropriate? It is also worked for me up to the Version 2.5.3 — October 17, 2008. It seems that from Version 2.6.0 — November 20, 2008 something is going wrong. Could it be the support of synchronization of the passwords? By the way, I have installed the newest version in my home computer just fine. The one that I use in work is a laptop 32 bit Vista Professional with FF/3.

Inappropriate?Since some folks appear to have trouble installing the signed version of the Foxmarks extension, we've started providing an unsigned version here:
https://static.foxmarks.com/clients/f...
One person reported they were able to install the extension after completely uninstalling Firefox, then reinstalling and not using the original Firefox profile folder. I think there might be multiple underlying causes for this problem, but we'll keep trying to find solution(s) for it. -
Inappropriate?I have tried the install on CLEAN VISTA BUSINESS with FF3 with NO OTHER ADD ONS many many times - it never works.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I have tried ALL versions and no one works ! Foxmarks had worked very well before an update of Foxmarks but I do not remember which one. I have uninstalled an reinstalled Firefox for nothing...
-
Inappropriate?I got this problem during a update from Xmarks 3.1.0 to 3.1.1 on FF 3.0.10. Suddenly the Xmarks extension was gone.
I tried to remove the extension.ini/cache/rdf files -> no dice.
I tried to reinstall the 3.1.0 version -> no change.
I noticed the foxmarks@kei.com folder appearing at install but then deleting itself at Firefox restart.
I got this error message from extensions.log:
2009-05-07 20:37:36 - safeInstallOperation: install operation (caller-supplied callback) failed, rolling back file moves and aborting installation.
2009-05-07 20:37:36 - ExtensionManager:_finishOperations - failure, catching exception - lineno: 1637 - file: undefined - [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80520015 (NS_ERROR_FILE_ACCESS_DENIED) [nsIZipReader.extract]" nsresult: "0x80520015 (NS_ERROR_FILE_ACCESS_DENIED)" location: "JS frame :: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Firefox/components/nsExtensionManager.js :: extractExtensionFiles :: line 1637" data: no]
2009-05-07 20:37:36 - ExtensionManager:_finishOperations - failure, catching exception - lineno: 4932 - file: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Firefox/components/nsExtensionManager.js - TypeError: entries[i] is null
So i figured that there was some sort of access error.
I then unzipped xmarks-3.1.1.xpi file to a folder named foxmarks@kei.com, moved it into the extensions folder. Restarted Firefox and voila! Got a message of succesfull upgrade to 3.1.1.
During this I also tried to install another extension and that worked, so no access error there.
Hope this can be of help to anyone. -
Inappropriate?Hey Soul187,
Thanks for the info. Usually the error message you posted is a sign of a corrupted Firefox profile. Hopefully you've fixed it, but if the same behavior occurs, I'd recommend starting fresh with a new profile. Directions are here for reference:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/M...
Thanks!
