Hacked account

My account (cheeaun) has been hacked. I found that my password has been changed because the Xmarks extension on my firefox suddenly couldn't work (due to wrong password). I've tried logging into the site but failed. I've also tried to recover the password but later I get "There is no account with that email address." error. My email is 'cheeaun(at)gmail.com' and I'm very sure this is the email I've registered in Xmarks.

You may have set your connection security to 'encrypt all' or 'encrypt log-on only'.
Go to the Xmark's log-on page and switch to secure log-on (link). Try your email and pw again....
    Hope that helped.

    Or try this in Firefox:
Go to Tools/Add-ons - disable Xmarks and restart Firefox.
then enable Xmarks again and it should connect.
I had the same problem and it worked for me (Firefox v3.6, Xmarks add-on v3.4.10).
It could also be that there is a glitch in their latest update - I didn't have any problems before I updated the Xmarks add-on yesterday...

From what I can tell, your account wasn't inappropriately accessed; it was instead deleted. If you were not the person who deleted the account, please post a follow-up here and we'll look into it further.

Looking at our server logs, I find that someone logged in as cheeaun on the Xmarks website and deleted your Xmarks account from there. This was done via a Safari web browser under Mac OS X.

Given the evidence I found, I would guess that either someone gained access to a web browser that you had logged in on, or else they obtained your password from another location and logged onto your account (your Xmarks password data isn't stored on our servers at all, so they wouldn't be able to get it from us). I'm not sure why they'd want to delete your account, though.

If you'd like more information such as specific dates, times, and IP addresses involved, feel free to write to us at the email address on our help page at https://www.xmarks.com/help -- be sure to reference this topic and write to us from the email address your account was registered under.

My case is most likely hacked email account as well. I could not access my email account - linny_48@hotmail.com - but my friends from here and abroad informed me through calls, texts, and emails in my other email account that they had received an urgent SOS email from me stating that I had hurriedly left for Nigeria, a relative was in hospital and dying, so, could they please send me financial assistance. A friend, whose email address I had nowhere else but my hotmail account, thought it was really me and hurriedly sent "me" 1,100 dollars using the name, account, address of someone in a Nigerian hospital. "I" apparently asked for more money so she called a mutual friend who then told her my hotmail account had been hacked and that I was nowhere near Nigeria, least of all asking for money, and that she'd been had. This friend is now asking the help of INTERPOL and another friend suggested that I have this Nigerian name/account traced. Thoughts, anyone? Thank you.

My account seems to have been hacked also, gmail, skype and hotmail passwords have been changed twice this month.
    • mick.staines: The first thing you need to do is change your PIN.

Have you changed your PIN? If not, go do so before finishing reading this. I'll wait.

All done? Great! This should be sufficient to guard your passwords against further changes, but you'll also want to change your Xmarks password at some point, since both password and PIN are required to write to password data on your account.

Most of the time when people see this, it's been due to their Xmarks account being installed on a computer they no longer have control over--for example, selling or giving away a computer without wiping off all account information, installing Xmarks on a public terminal (something I wholeheartedly don't recommend at all), etc.

The best solution to work around such an issue is to delete your Xmarks account and start anew with a different Xmarks username. This won't change the fact that the other browser still has all your password data, though, so you'll probably want to change passwords on accounts that are important to you.

Finally, I definitely recommend having your computer scanned for viruses to ensure that your PIN wasn't obtained that way (assuming that you've ruled out the possibilities I mention above).

Please let us know whether you determine how this happened to your account; we take such breaches very seriously, and want to make sure we understand such problems.

      Thanks!
