Inappropriate?Hi! The new Xmarks keep telling me that I have a synchronization error using Firefox. Foxmarks was working so well.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Same problem. Everything worked until i was upgraded (and i don't recall getting an option re: upgrade.
-
Inappropriate?has anyone received a solution? I am going nuts with this syncing error stuff.and it's happening on all my macs and browesers , so it cant be me
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? The users in my office are all suffering.....I think that that xmarks has tried to get too clever too quick. I think they should concentrate on sorting out all the niggles, instead of concentrating on newer ideas.....where have I heard that before?
I’m frustrated

this solves the problem
-
Inappropriate?I have no problems with it.
My first guess is that some weird firewall/antivirus/security setting is blocking it. It's also possible another addon doesn't like it (try disabling each of them one-by-one and see if it still crashes).
If you just want to downgrade: If you go to the Xmarks page on Firefox, there'll be an option there to download an older version. Then if you edit one of the addon files, you can trick it into thinking it's the latest version. (I seen it somewhere on here -- may have to search a bit.)
That's Aimee for you, the eternal troubleshooter. -
Inappropriate?Hi all -- sorry for the delay in responding! It's been a busy month.
I've not been able to replicate any of these Firefox crashes with the new Xmarks extension, but we'd very much like to investigate further. If you're still experiencing crashes when Xmarks tries to synchronize, please submit a crash report and then post the link here--you can find the link to the crash report by visiting about:crashes in your Firefox browser.
If you can provide more details on how precisely to reproduce the behavior, that would help immensely.
Thanks! -
Hi Eric, can you just tell me how to uninstall xmarks please? thanks GD. -
Inappropriate?Well I found a solution that worked for me. There was a suggestion in one of the links for Foxmarks to send in the log, of course since the upgrade it is now called xmarks.log. After I looked at the log it seemed to me that the synch problem was happening everytime it looked for my Firefox installation which was not on my primary partition C:. Saved all my settings, removed Firefox and reloaded to my C: drive.. Installed xmarks and I now have no problems with synching.
-
Interesting! So your Firefox profile folder was on a separate partition? I'm not sure why that'd cause crashes, but we'll keep an eye out for that. Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Hi there:
Syncing Error after upgrading from foxmarks to xmarks... Most of us keep having "Problem Syncing" error (see attached screenshot)

Foxmarks is still working on some other PCS though - we're just having problems with Xmarks. This is such a great extension and we would love to continue using it.
Please Help!

MovieLakay.com: That error suggests that your password data has been corrupted in your Firefox profile folder. I'd suggest a fresh Firefox profile as described here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/B... -
Inappropriate?Xmarks is a disaster.
I have spent more time trying to retrieve bookmarks, deleting endless duplicates - following technical instructions to create identities - and everytime I open Firefox it keeps telling me to select between local version and server versions of ALL my bookmarks - or it tells me there is a duplicate and only gives me the option to continue and have a duplicate (what is the logic in that?!) or cancel, in which case you are back to the start again and it continues all over again.
Foxmarks never, NEVER, required any attention.
Xmarks is a complete and utter disaster.
I’m fed up
-
Sorry you've had such a frustrating time, Ben! I've not seen behavior like you're describing before, but I can definitely imagine how difficult it'd be to work with. Have you tried an upload to the Xmarks server to reset things to a more stable point? Tools > Xmarks > Settings, "Advanced": Upload -
Inappropriate?I'm with you guys, inexplicable syncing problem. May be associated with IE, and/or confusion with login user name (I seem to have 2 logins)
I’m confused, frustrated, sad
-
Whoops, missed this reply when I commented above; great to hear you got it working again! -
Inappropriate?I also have been having terrible problems with Xmarks that I never had with Foxmarks. I run Xmarks on several computers at home and work. Ubuntu (8.04, 8.10, and 9.04), Windows Vista, and Mac OS X Leopard. I sync Firefox, Safari, and IE8 bookmarks. All of this was working well (other than Vista sorting all my bookmarks into alphabetical order and fouling up the Unicode ones) until recently. Now I almost can't get any of them to sync and when I do they take forever and suck up 100% CPU. It's as if the remote server is terribly busy, or the sync is corrupted or something, but it never gives an error it just freezes. Sometimes if I wait long enough (20-30 *minutes*) it might complete, other times my only option is to kill it.
I'm honestly thinking of abandoning Xmarks and looking for another solution.
I’m frustrated
-
halyihev: Behavior like you're describing generally occurs if you have more than 5,000 bookmarks. If you visit http://my.xmarks.com/ and click on "Grid View" at the bottom, you can find the bookmark count at the bottom right, usually like "Displaying Results 1 to 25 of 500". If you see more than 5,000, you'd need to prune your bookmarks back some in order to synchronize smoothly.
Otherwise, disabling automatic synchronization is probably your best option; we're working on supporting larger bookmark collections, but haven't quite found the right method for that yet. -
Thanks. This was the problem, I do have to say, though, a lot of it was duplicates that had clearly been added by previous syncs, where I'd have a folder and suddenly have three or four of the same folder with all its bookmarks. I cleaned that up, reset the server copy, and then have pulled it down onto two different machines, and it works fine now.
I'll keep an eye on the duplication issue, and post something here if I can catch that happening. -
Thanks Halyihev and Eric for your posts!
I have the same problem as Halyihev ...
My bookmarks count is now at 5272 on http://my.xmarks.com/ as seen on "Grid View" at the bottom...
I have two computers from which I sync my bookmarks with xmarks...
One at home (windows XP) and one at work (Ubuntu 8.10) ...both with firefox
My computer at home is still syncing fine... but my computer at work is NOT able to complete the syncing process... I did try to wait for like 35 minutes for the syncing process to complete, but without results...
Unlike Halyihev, I do not have duplicates, so I cannot cut down the number of bookmarks...
Is there an other way to keep my bookmarks, like having two accounts of 2500 each? (Not very practical, because I will have to search and mark my bookmarks from and to 2 accounts!)
Any brilliant idea? -
Inappropriate?Eric, this is me responding to 2 of your comments (and a question): 1. I tried your upload trick, & still have a sync error. 2. Only have 612 bookmarks. 3 Where is the Xmarks Log? I have Win XP, & suppose it's in my profile, & I know how to explore it.
I’m confused, but hopeful
-
The Xmarks log can be viewed in Firefox under Tools > Xmarks > Settings, "Advanced": "Show Log File", and in similar locations in the Safari and IE versions. We'd just need to see the specific line indicating the error to help further. -
Inappropriate?Eric, here's a small portion of the log. I note it doesn't have any errors, all say success! But my XMarks tray icon shows an error?

Thanks for the details! That looks like your Firefox xmarks.log, but a systray icon suggests you also have Xmarks for IE installed, is that right? Right-clicking the icon that has the error message would be the way to access the logfile associated with the error it's indicating. Sorry for the confusion there! -

---Is that enough? -
Inappropriate?how can I change this

I think this is the problem.
please notify me -
Inappropriate? To metallan, everytime I click on your link, I get a JSON parsing error?
I’m frustrated, confused
-
Inappropriate?I think Xmarks for IE and that for firefox craches each other.
Or Xmarks for IE make trouble itself.
In my case, after uninstalling Xmarks for IE, I unjailed from this sinc error problem. -
Inappropriate?to metallan---it mysteriously solved itself. Thanks XMarks maintainers (who I believe have been updating it)?! I cannot say that any of you had any source in it
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Yes, same problem. I started with Foxmarks and was SUPER impressed with it. So, I synced 3 machines (Mac OSX, Win Vista & Ubuntu) seemlessly. I have about 300 bookmarks. Now, I was recently re-orging my folder structure, so I went to see my what I did on the MAc show up on the Vista machine... and, it's not syncing, after ~ 30 min of restarting Firefox, hitting 'sync' over & over, etc-- even though the My Xmarks webpage shows the correct folder structure. Soo... what's the solution? An Xmarks upgrade?
I’m sorta unhappy for people in the same position
-
It seems they are having problem with cross-browser support of bookmarks. They haven't got the kinks sorted out. Frustrating. -
Inappropriate? To all---it was mysteriously solved on 1 computer, the one that has most frequently had it, apparently by automatic updates to the module---I can think of no other reason!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I have had the same issue on both my work and home PC's (XP & Vista respectively) in both IE and FireFox since August. It just fails to sync so is pretty much useless to me.
-
Inappropriate?I ended up having to organize the bookmarks I had on the Windows machines running IE, sync them, then force-download to all the Firefox installs especially those on Linux to overwrite the local bookmarks. I definitely lost bookmarks doing this, but it was the only way to make it work again.
Xmarks clearly does not like cross-browser bookmarking even if it looks like it does. It tolerates it, mostly, but sometimes it messes up, and it seems like the one most likely to get corrupted is Firefox. Which is a problem for me since Linux with Firefox is my primary desktop.
There have been a couple updates since I fixed this and I haven't had it die again yet. Hopefully that means newer versions solved the inter-browser problem?
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?Firefox 3.5.5 is crashing while attempting to sync on LinuxMint 8 after adding xmarks and syncing on Google Chrome beta for linux. Never had an issue with xmarks before. It must be a cross-browser issue. I tried forcing a download of bookmarks from the server - crashed as before. I tried forcing an upload of local bookmarks - this seems to have fixed the problem. DON'T USE OTHER BROWSERS WITH XMARKS IF YOU ARE USING FIREFOX UNTIL THIS ISSUE IS FIXED.
-
Inappropriate?I've been having an issue with xmarks creating duplicate bookmarks and folders. I've been fighting it for months now. The only thing that prevents me from bolting to Ubuntu One (their cloud) is the restore function, but it's getting old to have to restore from 12 hours ago.
I run firefox only. What I found this morning when looking at the restore files on the server is that the offending save file had appeared at a time when I wasn't even on the computer. So either the bloated file appears to have created itself on the server, or from my laptop (it was connected to the internet).
In either case, this is getting very old. Xmarks really needs to fix this.
-
Inappropriate? It happened again. For no reason that I had anything to do with, my firefox bookmarks once again just ballooned with duplicates, and there was a new saved file on the server that I did not create. It's as if the client and server decided to initiate a save but screwed it up.
