Inappropriate? You can do that in Firefox 2: Open Firefox's Bookmark Manager (Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks) and find the folder or container in the left-hand pane that contains the bookmarks you wish to sort. Right-click on that folder or container and select "Sort By Name." Voila!
Note that this is different from clicking the "Name" column header in the Bookmark Manager. This effects the way that bookmarks are sorted only within the bookmark manager and only for this session. If you want your ordering to persist, use the technique described above.

Aloha:
Thank you for this information; however, when I follow your instructions, the bookmarks re-alphabetize until I click on a different bookmark folder. When I return to the original re-alphabetized folder, it is back to its original un-alphabetized order. How frustrating. Any suggestions? -
Note that this is only possible in Firefox 2--are you using Firefox 3? It doesn't support "permanent" alphabetization at all.

Thank you, Eric. Yes, I'm using Firefox 3. How frustrating. I'm curious why Firefox 3 provides the sort function (bookmarks > organize bookmarks > Sort) if the sort is not going to remain beyond the initial sort? -
It works on Firefox 3 with X-marks and, with a Mac, the right click becomes a CTRL click. Thanks for the help. -
Inappropriate?Hi,
and does someone know, how to sort the bookmarks at Formarks-Online? Thank you! Isa -
Currently it's not possible to sort your bookmarks in a way that synchronizes to your browser, but you can use the "Grid View" option at the bottom of your my.foxmarks.com page to view an ordered list of your bookmarks that you can easily sort by clicking on the column headers on that page. -
Inappropriate?Firefox 3 appears to be incapable of sorting bookmarks alphabetically and automatically.
To me this is an obvious requirement and Firefox's major failing.
I was hoping that perhaps Foxmarks could come to the rescue and automatically sort online in an alphabetic order and the preserve this order when downloading/syncing to the client pcs. -
Thanks for your feedback! We'll definitely keep it in mind, as this does seem to be a popular feature request. Feel free to add an "Idea" topic to get others to chime in! -
Inappropriate?I'll add my vote. Adding new folders and new bookmarks should automatically be alphabetized. Otherwise, what's the point??
-
Inappropriate? Please add a feature to sort the bookmarks alphabetically in Firefox 3 and above.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?PLEASE, please add a feature to sort bookmarks alphabetically in Firefox 3!! If this doesn't happen soon, can I go back to Firefox 2?
I’m a little frustrated!

Mrs. F, we just make the Foxmarks extension, so we have no objection at all to you switching back to Mozilla's version 2 of Firefox. -
Inappropriate? What about those of us who DON'T want a machine re-rewriting our bookmarks!? I foolishly decided to try the IE7 beta only to find it has taken over the logic of my bookmarks so that IE 'links' predominate over my FF3 bookmarks toolbar and, what's worse, has put them in alpha order which IS NOT the way I want them. How do I get this back? Should i just uninstall the IE beta?
I’m angry and frustrated
-
IE has an option to sort alphabetically, and you can disable that option. If that doesn't reset the bookmarks back to the original ordering, you can then use the "Explore & Restore" feature at http://my.foxmarks.com/ to restore a pre-alphabetically-sorted version. -
Eric, is the issue of bookmarks appearing sorted by name due to IE7 running FoxMarks, or not?
I prefer my bookmarks NOT to be alphabetized (or Sorted By Name).
IE's option to sort alphabetically: open the favorites menu, choose 'Organize favorites', right click the favorites folder and choose 'Sort By Name' from the contextual menu. This appears to have no effect as selecting 'Sort By Name' over and over leaves my Favorites listed alphabetically. This is why I wonder if the issue of foxmarks-synchronized bookmarks suddenly appearing alphabetically has ANYTHING to do with IE. If, in fact, it is due to IE, then we need to work out how to disable 'Sort By Name' in IE. Until the details of the origin of the issue are made clear, Foxmarks users who use FireFox and IE are going to blame Foxmarks. Thanks for any input you may be able to provide! -
The default for sorting in IE is alphabetical, so if something goes wrong while we're trying to synchronize bookmarks, it will revert to alphabetical sorting, and can synchronize that reversion back to the Foxmarks server as well.
There's a known issue with the current release of Foxmarks for IE that causes alphabetical sorting under Windows 7, but we think the next release should fix that.
If you're not using Windows 7, please post a fresh problem report with details on which version of Foxmarks for IE you're using, your OS version, and any other details which might be useful.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Really want to be able to sort (keep sorted) and the ability to delete files in both classic and grid view
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I was completely missing the way to sort things in Firefox 3--pcorcoran has the answer here:

This does not answer the question. -
Inappropriate?Since just about all the users are using version 3, why are you telling us how to alphabetize using version 2. STOP answering this question with stupid answer. If you do not know the answer to our questions then please use you hand for something more enjoyable.
I’m unimpressed with your answers

Inappropriate?Arnie: Keep in mind that we don't provide support for Firefox 3 here; if you'd like to provide feedback on their features, you can do so at Mozilla's website: http://support.mozilla.com/kb/

I’m happy
-
Inappropriate? After reading this i FINALLY got my bookmarks to alphabetize and stay.....the only way to get them to do this is to open the library and in the left hand pane right click on the folder you want to alphabetize. Choose sort by name and the links in that folder will stay alphabetized. Hallelujah.
I’m stoked.

Inappropriate?it would be nice if xmarks could do this automatically
