Merge bookmarks from two computers (own server) howto?
Merge bookmarks from two computers (own server) howto?
Summary questions:
(1) How do I manage with my own server to upload bookmarks? - currently getting "Foxmarks: Error: Forbidden" (per Wiki-Help
(2) If I get that to work, is there any way to MERGE bookmarks from two computers currently having very similar bookmarks but each with some bookmarks not in the other, rather have to make one or the other my starting point?
Windows XP SP3 - Foxmarks 2.1.0.12 - Chandler Server 1.0.0 (aka Cosmo server-?)
=== longer description of situation ===
I have two computers Desktop and Laptop (both running Firefox 3.0.1 - portable)
Laptop installation was created several weeks ago by copying PortableApps/Firefox folder from Desktop to Laptop. About a week ago, I lost connectivity to Internet from Desktop but before this I had added a number of bookmarks on Desktop so it had some bookmarks that didn't exist on the Laptop version
For a week or so I used only the Laptop and during that time added bookmarks to it.
Now I've restored internet connectivity on Desktop and wish to resume using it as the primary system.
I installed Foxmarks on both machines and using OSAF-Como setup a server on the desktop which uses SSL.
Situation now: I can open https://localhost:8443/
I created an account on it and logged into https://localhost:8443/chandler/pim on Desktop
and using just created account logged into https://mydesktop:8443/chandler/pim on Laptop
GREAT :-)
Also logged in under default admin account (root) with default password on both Desktop and Laptop machines.
Now going through Foxmarks Settings - in Advanced I set
-- [x] use own server "https://mydesktop:8443/"
First attempt to do
-- Manual Overwite [Force overwrite of server bookmarks] [Upload] resulted in an error. checking [Help] indicated that the correct URL should probably be:
Trying again ...
-- [Upload] gives Writing to Sync file then
-- Status: Forbidden (log says 403 error)
-- Foxmarks: Error: Forbidden - help indicates "cookies" or "firewall" problem - probably not relevant to my problem?
FWIW: on Foxmarks - [General] tab I've set it up to use the "root" admin account with the default password. I haven't run the [Setup Wizard] since instructions say (somewhere-?) not to use it with your own server. I also haven't set up "sync profiles" since that appears to be applicable only if not using own server (?)
End of log reads ...
[2008-08-23 04:15:14] Progress: ({status:403, msg:"Forbidden"})
[2008-08-23 04:15:14] Returned error: Forbidden(403)
[2008-08-23 04:15:14] Will retry at Sat Aug 23 2008 04:30:28 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)

Inappropriate? For others' edification, a lot of this is covered in our wiki here:
http://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Foxmark...
If you're getting a "Forbidden" error message, then that means the user you're logging in as doesn't have permission to write to the file you're trying to write to. Or the directory doesn't yet exist; your understanding of the specifics of your server implementation will vastly outrank my own.
Once you get it working, though, the merge should happen automatically--some bookmarks may be duplicated if they're not in the precise same folder on each browser, but there should be no bookmarks lost and duplicates will be merged wherever possible.
