Inappropriate?Having the same problem with Firefox 3.5.3 under OSX 10.5.8. Sync never seems to complete nor does it receive any updates from the server after sitting for hours. John, where did you find the error 3 in your logs? I checked console for this and did not find a recent entry for Firefox. I can find nothing related to Firefox or XMarks there.
Not having much luck with Windows version either under XP with IE. I was contstantly getting error messages 2 seconds into a sync. Last week I overwrote the server side by manually clearing out the current contents and pushing new list from IE. The sync problem persisted. As I am writing this, I thought to test it one more time under IE and for the first time in over a week, I received a success message - there were no updates to apply either apparently.

The successful fix was to open Finder\library\Application Support\Firefox and delete the files places.sqlite and places.sqlite-journal plus all bookmarkbackups and some files prefixed by foxmarks which I presumed were out of date.
The xmarks.log showed evidence of the failures. I deleted that as well.
It worked though initially xmarks seemed to restore locally deleted bookmarks when a sync took place, even in I used the admin-overwrite option.
I corrected this by overwriting the server file after deleting the offending marks and they were not restored.
There would seem to be no need to rebuild the profile entirely
