password prompt
Ever since I installed foxmark I get the master password prompt constantly, even when I do things that do not require the password. Is foxmark requesting the password every time I use firefox?

Inappropriate?yes foxmarks relies on the password manager to save the sync password and PIN (for password sync)
and FF needs the master password before it'll return the password to foxmarks
I’m happy to help

Inappropriate?Yes, repetitive frequent prompts for Foxmarks password are extremely annoying when working with another website. I really see no reason at all for this behavior, and I would appreciate instructions on how to *stop* these incessant prompts. TIA, dave

Inappropriate?you could disable the master password in tools->options->security and uncheck the "use a master password" check box
that way you'll never need to input it again -
Inappropriate?Disabling the master password presents a lot of security problems (as does entering it every time Foxmarks wants to sync. Has same effect). I really don't care much if somebody steals my Foxmarks password, but care a lot about some of the other ones I have stored.
Would like an option to just store my Foxmarks password in plaintext in some insecure location.

Inappropriate?well the only thing that actually would repeatedly trigger the master password prompt is the password sync (it needs to reload the passwords saved locally each time it tries to sync them, an action that required the master pass)
and the actual foxmarks pass is cashed after you have entered it/it was retrieved the first time
if you don't really need password sync you could disable it and foxmarks'll only request the pass once prior to the initial sync. if you do need password sync there is nothing you can really do against it as FF needs the master pass to retrieve the stored passwords
if pass sync was disabled then you could try to disable the "remember password between session" behavior of foxmarks and see if it still repeatedly prompts you the foxmarks pass and if it still does it's a bug -
Inappropriate?Ah, I was only using for bookmark sync (don't think the password sync option was even there when I first started using Foxmarks).
Repeated prompting for passwords was never really my issue. Just the promt the very first time it tried to sync. Ideally I'd like to be able to sync my bookmarks without ever having to enter a password. Obviously with password sync, the security becomes a little important, but I'm not too afraid of people messing with my bookmarks.
I've turned off the "remember password between settings" option, which doesn't change much. Now instead of getting the Firefox master password prompt, I get the foxmarks login prompt. A prompt is a prompt, but at least I'm not unlocking my master password until I need to. -
Inappropriate?there is a add-on that locks the security device some time after it has been last accessed
here it is
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...
though for it not to be called at all is not possible without altering the js files (not recommended) -
Inappropriate?Another option for Mike is to disable automatic synchronization, then it only asks for it during manual sync or else if you set sync-on-shutdown, it'll ask then.
Moving out of using the Firefox password store isn't something we have any immediate plans for, but we'll keep it in mind. -
I want to delete this function. I can't concentrate with the constant interruptions. Is my only alternative to delete Mozilla Firefox and start from scratch? I'm tired of cursing every 2 minutes or less! Your comment sounds callous. I never expected XMarks to constantly intrude on my ability to use email. Please give specific, detailed instruction on how to uninstall and or delete. I'm not a computer expert, I just need to get my work done. Help. -
Inappropriate?Having used Foxmarks for quiet some months now, on a daily basis, I think I see what's happening:
Foxmarks asks for the password whenever you receive a login cookie from any site (once per session); even if you don't store a password for that site. This is bad behavior. It should only be trying to update the off-site password storage when you save a new password in the Firefox password manager. Now, I suppose, this could be a Firefox error...if Firefox is changing the password manager file every time you receive a login cookie.
The more I think about it the more I would like a response from Foxmarks about this: Is Firefox incorrectly modifying something in the password manager (like the file date) every time we receive a login cookie? If so, this is bad behavior on the part of Firefox, and Firefox should have a bug filed against it. On the other hand, if this is Foxmarks idea...why?
Please advise.

From your description, I'm suspecting something odd in the way Firefox is managing this use case. Can you provide more specific details on reproducing the behavior? A specific website and steps to reproduce using it would be great. -
Thank you for the time you took with this explanation. I want to delete this function. I can't concentrate with the constant interruptions. Is my only alternative to delete Mozilla Firefox and start from scratch? If so, I'm going to Safari. This is unacceptable. -
Inappropriate?Would it be possible to have foxmark only ask for the master password once I trigger the sync. I have found even with automatic sync on it still asks me for my master password each time I turn on Firefox. it even asks me when I have unchecked to remember my passwords and even taken them out of they safe. I do not have a problem with entering my master password to let foxmark sync I just wish it would no do it each time I open Firefox.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?damon: If you disable automatic synchronization, then Foxmarks won't try to access your password, and you won't have to enter your Master Password.
If you find this doesn't fix things, it's quite likely that something else besides Foxmarks is triggering the Master Password request on Firefox startup. -
Inappropriate?PJ: Simply delete the add-on. Tools > Add-on > foxmarks (or xmarks) > uninstall.
Like Eric said: "If you find this doesn't fix things...something else besides Foxmarks is triggering the Master Password request"

I believe you saved a million+ minutes of frustration and wasted time. Genuine thanks for this clear instruction! The Universe rewards people like you. Best always, PJ -
Inappropriate?I don't use Xmarks but my firefox keeps prompting me for my password every 30 minutes it seems. What is up this that? Sounds like a about:config tweak but not sure where to go. Thanks

Inappropriate?I finally ditched Xmarks & went to SyncPlaces...I'm a much happier camper.
